Yes, I imagine most people knew that. I've certainly mentioned it here since the digest came back.

42 sightings...

During this weeks episode of  "The Shield",  Vic responds to a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex, unit number......42.   Michael Chiklis looks a bit like MK as well.
During a scene from The French Connection, Roy Scheider and Gene Hackman are looking at an impounded car and in large numbers on the windshield is...42.

I'm curious as to how Robin Moore knew there would eventually be a band called Level 42?  Is it possible Douglas Adams got his idea for "42" from watching this movie?

> JT I think we're in the same parish here.

Loz, Let's keep it as: maybe we're on the same street,
I'm not so disillusioned with myself that I need a
religion, but thanks ;)

>WHY on

I don't agree with that, frankly I find all 3 sub-par
musicians. For them to get a record deal of any kind
would be _far_ harder than getting some cuts on a
"Level 42" release. I would imagine all 3 would be
pleased as punch to be involved, so I further imagine
that the creative stifling is within MK. This may be
one thing when you're alone, but when you get together
in a group, let alone for many a year, and dont
out-put anything, that says alot.

>JT, methinks you harp on the so called
> 'laminated' set list thing
> a bit too much. :-)

Hey Win, nice to see a post from you.
No, of course I am not talking past tours, the DVDs
prove the switching of sets.
My harping on it is for many a reasons, but it got
renewed with some of the "true" fans continuing with
the 'I'll go see them no matter what they play' stuff.
This is what MK will play to. He knows this is
acceptable, so why Avis ('try harder') for anything?

>Now last year, they sorta went back in
> time, because
> this was a 'GREATEST HITS' deal, so thats to be
> expected.

I would never 'expect' a band that didn't have 10-12
"greatest hits" to to play the same thing. As you
nicely point out, and some will acknowledge due to
experiencing it: playing the same shit can be (is)
boring as hell, so therefore we have some of the
members dancing around acting like idiots. For
"GHits", yes the medley-thing has to be played,
anything else is interchangeable, as it is not a
"hit". "Seven Years" is a perfect example.

> Now, us being more than the average fan, we are
> gonna want a lot more diversity than a fan who only

>RITF, etc..it's no big loss. But any band has to be
expected to play their major
> hits, because thats what a HUGE portion of the
>audience comes to hear.

I see your point, and of course I consider this. But I
also would hope to give people a bit more credit (and
this from a misanthrope), if someone is going to a gig
and just comes away digging the one song they went to
hear, there is probably something wrong with them, or
with band. This is a pop band, a great deal of their
songs fit the same formula, and a live show can have
some energy, so I would hope that a retraction of xx
song would not have an effect. And if it did this fan
was probably not going to buy a record anyway, because
they clearly just want to hear yy tune.
As stated before, I think bands like Rush and Led
Zeppelin faired pretty well. And while I dont follow
someone like Madonna, but with her damn big list of
certified hits, I doubt she performs every one of them
every night. Yes, some pinheads will walk away saying,
"I can't believe she didn't play "Cherish"", but
hopefully that fan enjoyed somehting else. But then
L42 seems to have some special fans that even the
audience seems to "ruin" gigs for them...

> I was at the READING gig, and the lesser known
> tracks were totally
> lost on the audience

I dont see this as a bad thing. And if they were
"lost" they probably have little to no Level 42 CDs.
Which means they will a) have hated the show aside
from the 2 tunes the radio plays b) loved hearing the
2 tunes and thought the 'new' material was interesting
enough to look into further purchases.

>My
> guess is if they do a larger reaching tour, they
> will mix up the
> arrangements a bit. (I can always dream)

Keep dreaming...I'll nap with you...together now: a
reggae version of "lessons in love"...

> The
> drum loops really turned me off big time..i always
>Phils a great drummer, but cutting

I agree 110%

> Sunbed Song is very repetitive to me,

It's kiddie pop.

> I heard Mike saying in an interview that it became

>
> This is utter crap.

um, no, son. Now go and finish your homework.

> Some of you have been having a go at Mark King's new
> line up and are pining
> for the Gould brothers.

Again, the 2 things just dont go together. Most know
that the orignal members will never do anything
togther. Some have a fantasy that they will record an
album, I see this happening only if it is so
financially rewarding that past waters can
(momentarily) be swam.
Blunt point is Level 42 is not that much of a draw.
Any critic of the current line up is because this is
what is being presented to us.
If I order a steak and it is given to me and it's just
not good, it's NOT because I long for the wonderful
way it was cooked years ago, but VERY SIMPLY, because
what is put in front of me is not very good.

> Did you not know that over a year ago Mark tried to
> get the original line up
> back together?

That, in NO way, excuses anything present tense.

>Can you not tell
> that he's trying to get Level well known again
> before releasing a new album

um, no.

One of these days I'll place a ' in the word
dont...sorry.

ok,
j

Wow, it GREAT to see NEW people posting and giving constructive comments, even those posts that told me to get off Mark's back!   Isn't freedom and democracy great!   Some may have thought that I was being too harsh, some have said that I wasn't hard enough.  Let me just clarify that I was not out to slam Mark as hard as I could - just making a few observations and voicing what I see as a slight injustice in the world of Level 42.   Antiquated, perhaps - but at the end of the day if I have to fly to London every November for the rest of my life to see L42 on stage - then so be it!  My love for their music hasn't been diminished, rather I just want to hear some news, anything from Mark mentioning his futuure plans - instead of hearing rumour and innuendo - which has been aplenty in this "void" of silence.  But dammit - ONE US gig would be GREAT!   Let's go with an idea that Carl Mueller has been throwing around for what seems like forevernow - getting all the digest fans together and fundraise (get the $$$$$$) and make a US appearance happen - that may be the only way!   I am willing to put my money where my big mouth is!  Let the "BRING MK TO AMERICA CAMPAIGN BEGIN!!!!!!!!!"

> Errr, Mark sings Tired Of Waiting - in fact, Mike thought it was Mark's strongest
> vocal perfromance on the album.

Doh!  I stand corrected--I was confusing "Tired Of Waiting" with "Time Will Heal".  Since I almost always listen to the Resurgence version of FN, I rarely get to hear TOW and forgot all about it.  It's not a bad tune, but I wouldn't trade it for "Forever Now".

In fact, I hadn't listened to FN in quite a while, so today when I had to make a road trip, I took it along.  All the songs sounded great, but when "Forever Now" came around, it woke me right up.  Energy-wise, it simply blows away every other song on the album, and I rate the lyrics to be among Level 42's best efforts.  I think the only reason some of you don't like this song is that it strays so far from that early 80's style you cling to.  It's a great track, and although I was never a big fan of horns in Level 42's music, this tune makes a strong case.

This subject gave me the notion to rate all the FN songs, so here's how I would do it.  Please share your version of this list, too.  From best to worst:

1.   The Bends
2.   Talking In Your Sleep
3.   The Sunbed Song
4.   Model Friend
5.   Play Me
6.   Forever Now
7.   Past Lives
8.   Love In A Peaceful World
9.   Billy's Gone
10. All Over You
11. Heart On The Line
12. Romance
13. Tired Of Waiting
14. Time Will Heal
15. Don't Bother Me
16. One In A Million
17. Learn To Say No

Peace - Z.

6 - Christopher Cross

Yesterday someone mentioned Christopher Cross, and I wish
I had their post in front of me, but alas, I'll take my annual
post to the digest and try to mention something relevant.
Christopher Cross's self-titled debut album won a record
5 Grammies, and was a distinctly refreshing breath of
air in what otherwise was a strange musical era, heavy
with disco and other such nonsense. It was really one
of the first albums I listened to a lot, being about
10 years old. The album is very tight, with an
assortment of excellent LA session musicians (Larry
Carlton, Victor Feldman, Michael McDonald, Jay Graydon,
Tom Scott, Michael Omartian, Greg Phillanganes) -- at this
point AG should be perking up and taking notice.
Yes, for all intents and purposes these are the very same
studio musicians that contributed to many Steely Dan albums,
notably Aja. So if you life Steely Dan, check out
Christopher Cross's debut album. Although it is clearly
a different style and a bit dated, it is an excellent album
and was a huge success when it debuted in 1980. The tight
musicianship that I appreciated upon hearing Level 42 (and
Steely Dan) is replete in this album. Christopher Cross's
voice is very clear and his range is superlative (at least
3 octaves), and he blends well with a nice throaty baritone
like Michael McDonald, but some are bothered by his natural
resonance in the near counter-tenor register. He is not,
in my opinion, reminiscent of Level 42 (King or Lindup) in
a vocal sense, but his arrangements and musicianship is superb
and that is, in my book, the strongest connection.

There are several Kevin Bacon-esque musical connections
between Christopher Cross and Level 42. I'll start by
suggesting that topoligically, Christopher Cross is simply
a small appendage to the mighty and weighty trunk of the
tree that is Steely Dan. So Christopher Cross -->
Steely Dan (in at least 15 different ways) and on
the other end is Level 42. To connect Level 42, you
can go through Lindup (Changes solo credits), or more
profitably through Dominic Miller or Alan Murphy. Some
possible linkages might go through Will Lee, Phil Collins,
Sting, Kate Bush, Tony Levin, Go West, Danny Thompson, Chick Corea,
Tim Schmidt (another excellent high tenor voice), Pino Palladino,
etc. . .

Let's see if anyone can connect Christopher Cross to
Level 42, either with the above hints or in some other
way.
