1.  My two bands

In answer to Monique's question, I'll start the ball rolling. I am the lead singer of two bands. The first is a straight ahead jazz quintet called The Rummies, and we have been a unit for five years. We released a CD a few years back, and played Carnegie Hall in 2001, which was a highlight of my musical life. We do songs by Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane, Antonio Carlos Jobim, etc. and I have to say we are quite good.

My second band is a unit called LOLITA [like Sade the band and the singer] and we do jazzfunk only. This project existed five years ago but disbanded due to personnel issues [could never keep a bass player]. Now we are back together and even better, because we have two backup singers and a horn player, none of which were in the first version of the band. We do old Rufus & Chaka Khan, Brand New Heavies, Jill Scott, and are about to add some Incognito. We've only had three gigs but the musicianship is stellar and we are going to get even better. I had a gig at B.B. King's here in NYC featuring both bands on August 22nd, which Winston shot for me and will be on a DVD and was a great show.

Singing in both these bands is such a joy and I get different fulfillment from them: the jazz group has been a great way to attain mastery in scatting, volume control and really using my voice as an instrument in the ensemble - I do a lot of harmony work with the alto sax player. The jazzfunk music lets me soar and reach for the sky [I have a booming alto singing voice that projects a lot] which I can't really do as much in the traditional jazz stuff. The best thing about it is that I don't have to live off the music [as you can see from my e-mail address], so I can sing what I want to sing. My biggest nightmare is being The Wedding Singer and being forced to take requests such as Respect and I Will Survive - nothing wrong with those songs, I just don't want to sing them. Give me a complex Ella song or Brother Sister by BNH any day over that...

Lolita
