Hey y'all,

As a birthday present from my wife I just received the new CyberHome CH-300/S DVD player. She got it at RadioShack for $69.99. I wanted that particular model because it has Progressive Scan (a feature not included on the CH-402 model discussed earlier on the Level 42 Webdigest), can play DVDs (in PAL as well as NTSC format, so now I can order the PAL-formatted Mark King IOW and the new Level 42 "Collection" DVDs, and play my Camouflage "<<Rewind" DVD), VCDs/SVCDs (so I can watch the Level 42 "Dreams And Visions" and "Countdown Holland" VCDs on the "Big Screen"), CD-ROMs, MP3s, JPGs, MPEGs, Kodak Picture CDs, etc. Here are some links to get more info and to buy it at RadioShack:

http://www.cyberhome.com/Products.asp?Product=300

http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5 Fname=CTLG%5F002%5F002%5F003%5F000&product%5Fid=16%2D3274

The CH-300 models only play discs in Regions 0 and 1, I haven't been able to find a region hack for it yet.

However, there is a hack for the CH-402 model to convert the player to Multi-Region (courtesy of http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/):

1.  Press the Setup button on your remote control
2.  Press the buttons 1, 3, 6 and 9 on your remote control, in order, one at a time
3.  Press the Left button on your remote control
4.  Press the Left button on your remote control
5.  Press the Left button on your remote control
6.  Press the Right button on your remote control
7.  Select the new Version option from the menu
8.  You will now be able to change the value to 1 for Region 1, 2 for Region 2, and so on, or 0 for multi-region playback

To convert this player to Multi-Region if the above does not work:

1.  Press the Open/Close button on your remote control to open the drive tray
2.  Press the Setup button on your remote control
3.  Using your remote control, highlight but do not select the Exit Setup option in the menu
4.  Press the buttons 1, 3, 6 and 9 on your remote control, in order, one at a time
5.  Press the Left button on your remote control, three times, in succession
6.  Press the Right button on your remote control
7.  Select the new Version option from the menu
8.  You will now be able to change the value to 1 for Region 1, 2 for Region 2, and so on, or 0 for multi-region playback

A few years ago, Gary was on a programme called 'You Bet', overseeing a man trying to play drums very fast.

Fans of the original Level 42 take note. There is a rumour of a rumour - kind of an unelucidated mist of a movement - something is happening. (Like what that woman says at the very beginning of Lord of the Rings!). Basically, cross everything.

You might want to check out Dennis Chambers, Keith.  Gary is a very good drummer, but there are quite a few who are better, faster, trickier, etc.  I used to get all wrapped up in things like this.  Over the years, those things become less and less important, especially in a musical context.  Who cares if Virgil Donati can do doublestroke rolls with his feet @ 190 bpm if it doesn't work in a song?

I saw Howard Levy of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones a few years ago play one song on the piano in one key and then another song entirely in another key on harmonica at the same time.  Pretty amazing - yes.  But so what.  When is that ever going to be enjoyed musically for any period of time?

I've been a drummer all of my life, so I get where you're coming from on a certain level.  Some of those things still can interest me for a few moments.  But listen to Ricky Lawson on a track like Gaslighting Abbie from Steely Dan's Two Against Nature.  Now THAT is what it's about.

BTW - hope this didn't read like a rip against you keith.  Not the intent or spirit of the comments.
