Hi All
Quick introduction - new to the Level 42 digest - discovered while searching around on the net .Been a fan since about 81 .Went to my first concert ( Hammersmith Odeon, London ) in around 82 and have since seen the ( original ) band around  40 or so times at many different venues ( would love to say 42 times but i really can't remember how many times ). Last concert was the new line up which took place at the Circus Tavern, Tilbury which is about 15 minutes from where i live in Essex. Essex is of course synonymous with Level 42 in the early days alongside Cortinas & furry dice.
Still have all the music and quite alot of the merchandise & other gumpf that went along with it. I have passed alot of the stuff ( mainly T-Shirts, rarer records, promo's ) i had on to collectors that i have come across in the last few years, i work in a 2nd hand record shop so i have made acquaintance with a few.
Always loved the live side of the band and their unique ability to adapt songs to the stage so that it didn't feel like you were just listening to one of their LPs with a hell of alot of friends. Many of my favourite L42 songs are live versions with my absolute fave being Love Meeting Love. Its a totally different experience from the studio version altogether.
I used to have quite a bit of live stuff on VHS and also audio tape but over the years the VHS tapes have become virtually unplayable or completely broken. If any one can help with any early live performances i would be extremely grateful.
Also if anyone is searching a 12" of Sandstorm i know where there is a copy available. Please mail me offline and i will give you the details.
Wondering as well if there is anyone else receiving the digest that knows me. I have a feeling there will be someone out there.

Thanks   Gareth Donovan

Missed Go West unfortunately when they were down here recently and also Tony Hadley but it was great to see them on Reborn in the USA last night.
Both have great voices and I thought Peter Cox did a superb job on a song set up & pitched for Mark Shaw (what a prat he made of himself!).

Even Dollar bought back memories of going out with my Brother when he got his first wage packet and buying up all the singles we liked at the time in the charts. Stuff like Dollar, E.L.O., Pretenders, Kate Bush, The Jam, The Police, Blondie, Squeeze, Gerry Rafferty etc. We just picked up any song we liked and image and 'hip-ness'  just didn't come into it.

cheers

Pete

NYIFNBR18 scratched:
One question, though...do I have to think Bush's full of shit, too?  Cause if that's the case, I guess I'll just bow out gracefully...

Nah, don't worry...your opinions count too!  This is not a common place for leader-bashing, with flaming retorts and the sort, so don't sweat it.  However, you may get flamed if you say something a few in particular don't like.  Then, you'll be searching through your thesaurus, while reading their well-versed replies, wondering why you didn't spend more time extending your vocabulary in school.  My book is damn near worn out now!  Thank God for the built-in one on the computer!

Take it easy, but don't take a bow out.  There's a lot of great stuff going on here.

All the best to you,

~Sean

Everyone,

My apologies for my political rant yesterday. Such
things can be offensive, and in letting out the bile,
I may have splashed someone. Sorry.

Many of us have strong political opinions, and if they
contain anything like the degree of heat of the "old
L42 Phil Gould" v. "Groupo 42" chestnut, then soon our
excellent digest would become unreadable.

I for my own part have taped the message "no politics
on the digest!" to my computer monitor. :)

sharing is caring,
-TF

Wellll, pour me a White Russian and take me
bowling...(Casting for Walter, Donny and the gang will
be left up to you, too).

Gotta agree with Walter, I mean AG, nostalgia plays a
fair part in some of this life-stuff.
Weather Report's _Black Market_ was my first purchase
on LP (and then, for the sake of nostalgia, I guess,
first CD), so that will always be a 'classic' to me.

I never really followed pop, aside from some offspring
of The Zappa School (Missing Persons), or bands that I
thought had a particular interest (Talk Talk), and I
only listened to select stuff once I started thinking
that avenue via the bass (Mark King, John Taylor).
But all this stuff is kinda special for that reason,
which is why I am here, cuz little to nothing of L42
is of real interest to me anymore, aside from some of
the early stuff, and MK sure as hell isn't making life
any more interesting...
This all gives a different, and actually more potent
meaning to the "living in the past" a variety of
people like to harp on.

And gotta agree with EH, Bush is a shitheal with some
kinda Daddy complex.
Gotta _not_ agree with whomever thinks that he will
not get re-elected. (John Kerry (is he the Dem's
leading cat at the moment?) has about as much
personality as a biscuit, and I see little way that
the electroral college (keep in mind folks, you 'right
to vote', as proved a few years ago, means completely
nothing) will changed administrations while all this
nonsense is going on (and you thought they keep
delaying it for other reasons...).

See what you started, Eric!?!?! ;)
