I find it very strange that this CD was sold for
$142.50 on Ebay the other day. I didn't pay that much for mine at all. The only
difference to the UK Polydor CD is the picture on the CD and that the sleeve is
folded in another way. $142 is too much to pay for this one.
Cheers Bjorn.

Don, given you made the following statement in
respect of 2AN and EMG, it, taken literally, is not entirely
accurate.
"The last album was saved by great basslines from
Tom Barney, but now he's gone too, replaced by Walter Becker who decided after
all these years to go back to being the bass player."
I did not know who played bass on all the tracks,
so I looked it up and reported back for our discussion. While I agree that
tracks 1, 8 & 9 have the most intriguing "wizard" like bass, the Becker
tracks are awesome too. It's the "taste" vs "wizardry" thing surfacing
again. To me, tracks 1, 8 & 9, do not at all "save" the
album; they certainly contribute to it's brilliance.
So, the point is, Tom was not "replaced" by
Walter. The point is, Tom did not "save" the last album. The point
is Walter did not "go back to being the bass player". That, Don, is my
point.
"Sure, it's a good album, but it doesn't rank with
the others I've just mentioned, and the main reason is the lack of top-drawer
talent in the bass and drum departments."
I find it difficult to compare SD albums to each
other due to the differing styles of music and the eras they encompass. It's not
quite as simple as comparing AC/DC before and after Bon Scott, or Van Halen
before and after David Lee Roth. I have difficulty in establishing a basis
for comparison of Pretzel Logic and Everything Must Go, except to say
they are both excellent.
Maybe for you, EMG is to Steely Dan
what Guaranteed is to Level 42.
"...nothing beats the Chicago-like horn section in
Caves of Altamira or the feel of Haitian Divorce. Or how about the great
gospel-like background vocals of The Fez and The Royal Scam?"
I too love the horn arrangements on this album,
which to me, set it apart from all the other rock of the ages. I really enjoy
every song on album. The guitars, keys, horns drums and bass are
amazing, not to mention the lyrics. I'd have to agree, this is a
masterpiece. I love the bass, piano and tambourine groove of Sign
In Stranger. "Turn up the Eagles the neighbors are listening."
The guitar on Don't Take Me Alive is so tasty. Green Earrings is another
fav with its powerful drums. I also have to agree about that piano bit in Black
Cow.
"...but if someone on here wants to sound off about
similar posts like the rubbish he sometimes posts then they should have the
freedom to do so." And of course they do. I think though, that many
thought the criticisms brought on Andrew where inaccurate, unnecessarily
personal, hypocritical, empty, etc.
Many of the responses where exactly what I was
thinking, but I didn't want to offend or upset anyone. I am glad that people
spoke up.
So is anyone ever going to post a biopsy of a
current Level 42 gig for those of us who cannot make it to one? I'd like to know
what others thought of the musicianship, the sound, the atmosphere (was it like
an 80's Level 42 gig). How are Mark's vocals? Does Gary duplicate Phil
or play his own interpretation? Is it mostly a younger crowd, or are there a lot
of "mature" fans from the 80's?
Sorry, I think I've "wasted" enough of my life for
one day, communicating with you lot.
Colin

| - Jackson, Lolita >I basically lived Steely Dan for a > year and a half as the lead singer of a > Steely Dan cover band. That’s cool, Lolita. I really dig covers with gender switched vocals. I, at one time( back when playing music was almost enjoyable), had our own L42’s “True Believers” in the setlist, with female vocals. -Colin Gupta Nice post, Colin. I think the social aspects of the gig are usually mentioned of late because the setlist if continually the same, and basically note-for-note (although GH is a deviator, thankfully) with little to no changes from the recordings (aside from) the now established add-ons to, say, SAY. As you’ve seen pictures (I imagine), MK is using a very tacky “princess” bass, commercialism at it’s finest, which will probably be for sale in stores at some point. I think Trace Elliot is still the amp of choice, although others follow this stuff far betta than I. Don Z may have the answers, as he’ll probably buy some more stuff off of MK (he’s loaded! Money wise, booze, that’s a different story). >JT, you slay me. Sorry, I was simply trying to maim. -Tom Foolery >and Friesen and JT are into pvc - (Blushing)...damn, secrets out, AF. -Bilal42 @ aol.com > Fact, Snoop keeps singing 'Theres Something About > You' in his latest single > Mark is much cooler though Cooler, like how? Compare _any_ Snoop interview with the whole spectrum of Mk interviews (or music videos vs. music videos). Snoop, hands down. -TPM1024 @ aol.com >JT has responded to my posts more than > anyone. He is frightengly quick with a comeback. Just too much work. But t’anks for the nice words. > Norman van den Wildenberg > Hey does anyone know which version of > changes it is that's on sale on mike > lindups site?? | -louie white >Did anyone see that someone paid $142.50 for a mike > lindup changes cd. Is anyone going to say something? Um, (dramatic mode on), oh my golly, that’s 189.09 in Swiss Francs!!! -Pete Willis well, well. Pete, while I appreciate you’ve got a thing for me (I too have had crushes…), it would be kinda cool if you, as they say, aired your laundry in private. But as I have a 2-hour waiting period here at work, let’s go over some life lessons…(apolgies to those that have already had their daily fill of me, feel free to save for later, or simply scroll-off) 1) I’m not sure how Eric came to my “defence”, as I have merely a balcony and no yard. (Yes, it’s low to knock ones spelling, and surely I run afoul on occasion, but when one is _really_ trying to flex some miniscule muscles, one should _really_ try to get their poop together, no?) If you meant my “defense” he merely did nothing of the kind. He retorted to my askew humour. That is all. (maybe you were hoping he’d spank me; I’m not certain wherein your fetish with me runs.) 2) As stated before, anything I write in which you “haven’t a clue” about, well, really, this is not a proud thing to say about yourself. I am not running the gamut of esoteric references, and I leave Descartes out of it. Essentially a mailing list for an ok pop band; I whittle my posts to fit within that realm. >I think jt's critisism of Mark King has been just silly comments which are way > over the top and certainly not constructive critisism. So why not defend them? Why not Mark defend them? Or someone here that has had more run-ins with Mark than I? While sometimes what I say, or comment, about MK is speculation (and it usually has “consecutive” form to it), any damn person with a fair grasp of people/humanity can see that there is a certain pattern going on. And it’s criticism. But no, I’m not up for “winding people up” (I’m losing track of the numbering, so that will go to the wayside) Pete, dear. For the second time you quote me as saying the Beatles are/were “talentless”. I never said such a thing. (someone, a few days after my initial post came up with that; sorry, I don’t recall the name.) I did, however say that they are “overrated”, which is really just a silly thing (albeit, true), and as I constructively stated when I wrote that, I went into a bit of diatribe about the word “overrated”, and then I gave some of my beliefs as the to the reasoning behind it; television being the big factor (just as, say, JFK is a fantastically “overrated” President, thank you television; this is all just historic fact, but feel free to sideswipe it.) And even if I (or anyone else) _did_ post such a comment, is it no more outlandish/uninformed than, “Level 42 is the Best Band EVER!!”, or “Mark King is the Best bass player in the world!!!”? Comments of which we have all seen more than a few times. And why in Nietzsche’s name would you expect Eric to “pass comment” on that, let alone anything/everything written here? You’re a strange bird… >Those posts [apparently the Beatles and slander of MK] deserved my postings on here. And you came up empty. And after a few months you actually seem to be moving backwards. Keep working at it. > to want to be everybodys 'friend' you seem to be > very selective in the people you do pick on but > that's your perogative. jt may be your best buddy Eric is not my “friend” (he doesn’t even like me, aside from the one night stand), but when one works all days and gains a certain level of intelligence, one manages to joke around about things. That’s all we’re doing, mate. This is a mailing list for a pop band, not some faction trying to pull the wool over your eyes or box you out of some special club. > but if someone on here wants to sound off about > similar posts like the rubbish he sometimes posts > then they should have the freedom to do so. “freedom” was not taken away. The post went though, no? (a dictionary will help you these matters…) > I concede though that he is now one of the main > contributors to this digest whereas I rarely get the > chance. Um, while I may have a physical resemblance to the one many call “jesus”, I by no means have ‘miraculous’ powers that let me interfere with your typing something, nor in hitting the “send” icon. Thanks for the credit, but your fixation is quite bizarre. As for workload restricting you, I can’t really feel empathy in the arena of hours worked (I haven’t had a full day off in months; apparently the “re” in front of “research” is there for a reason), and if it’s all bottled up within you, obviously affecting you, maybe shorten that lunch and pound the keyboard for one day. >Great ammo for any future > postings where he slams the next pop group!! [onto AG now]. You seem to think debate, or conversation is battle oriented. Curious… Pete, yes, the Steely Dan convo was/is pretty good. Sadly we are dealing with a band (l42) that while big news is seemingly around, little is being discussed. As others, I highly recommend you check out at least the old stuff. But as you say, it didn’t quite grab you at first, and while, yes, occasionally things need a few listenings (Mahler, maybe, for eg), I do understand the theory behind, ‘yeah it may be great soup, and yeah there may be 3 canolini beans in there, but I don’t want to have to search for them, bring me a pizza (or the head of Alfredo Garcia)’. ["clue": that was a movie reference] Pete, I’d be happy to settle any ‘issues’ you have via private email; I’m only slightly a bastard when you get to know me…. - DonZipf @ aol.com > And your point is...? Man, I just love seeing Don all worked up! ;) (a smiley for those that don’t know what humour is) >[Becker on Rainey]If he still lived in New York, he'd probably > still be doing our records." Has the invention known as the airplane not made it to wherever CR _is_ living? I agree DZ, to me the old SD stuff is…different. Kinda magical. I would have felt a bit more confident in the music if they just left the past alone and called themselves Fagen/Becker (ala Page/Plant w/o JPJ and (obviously) JB didn't, thankfully, use the LZ moniker). Or another dildo reference, or something. But this just a personal feeling. Pardon the simple abuse of semi-colons herein, j(ay) __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! | Pete Willis wrote: > Also his statement of the Beatles being talentless etc. was one of the most stupid > postings ever Oh, slagging The Beatles off is just a popular baiting ploy around here. Anyone who would accuse The Beatles of being talentless either is just tossing bombs or hasn't a clue who they are. In fact, I've spent the past couple of evenings watching the Anthology documentary series on DVD. If anyone doubts the magnitude of The Beatles' talent, they should watch the first couple of episodes, and see for themselves just how the lads blew past everyone else on the scene back then. They really were something new and different, and their live performances were pretty impressive! > I have put on Nightfly a time or two due to AG's recommendation and enjoyed it to a > point but again it hasn't been an album I keep reaching for. Maybe its' a grower, and > deserves a few more plays? Pete, try Kamakiriad instead, which I believe is more likely to satisfy the average Level 42 fan. They're both fantastic albums, of course, but where The Nightfly is jazzier, Kamakiriad is funkier--plus it has the advantage of being a long-form work (a "concept" album), which makes it more interesting, imho. | Learned Levelologists ... ... I've been out of the loop for a while and frankly can't be arsed reading the last 30 Digests in my Inbox ... although I looked at the last three or four and felt as though I was interrupting an argument! In the words of Ric from The Young Ones: "Guys, look at us, fighting, bickering, we never used to be like this..." (No complaints please, I'm paraphrasing). I just watched Dreams & Visions for the first time after realising I could play it on my laptop. Apart from the quality being a bit dodgy, I loved it. The clip for My Father's Shoes gets me right here. On Weave Your Spell and Bitter Moon, it says 'director unknown' and I was curious as to why that is ... anyone know? I was also reminded of our Mark's reluctance to play his bass during video shoots. And do I smell a new Level 42 album in the air? Can someone enlighten mr as to whether this is kosher or complete bollocks? Anyone know if this German 'Ohne Filter' Mark King DVD is worth getting? Can I play it in Australia? If my German exchange student puts it on it should work, right? More BIG FAT apologies to Win and Loz - I'm really sorry for the delay guys - I have to leave my house in a hurry because the landlord has decided to reclaim it and have had to pack everything up. The 'goods' are here but in a box. I'll send them when I'm in the new place next week, promise. This is most unlike me, as others on the 'gest I've sent stuff to will attest. Hands up who thinks Mark should tour Australia. He can stay at my new place. And maybe he can tune my bass while he's here. Did you hear about the guy who was run over by a steam train? He was chuffed to bits. Thanks for listening ... fantastic crowd. Cheers ~ Mike (Sydney City Milkman) __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo!
