Happy Father's Day, it's my first one!!!

> And listen to Tom
> Barney's work on Two Against Nature--if that ain't
> showy bass wizardry, I don't know what is!

this is blasphemy and an affront to all things Mark
King. Time for jihad, or a fatwa at the very least.

> I've begun
> calling EMG "the Casio album", because the bass and
> drums remind me of the canned auto-accompaniment
> feature in Casio keyboards. ;o)

I have not heard EMG, but truly this is for me at
least the Achillies Paradox of Steely Dan - Great
musicians? yes! Interesting ambiguous song subjectry?
Yes! Innovative chord progressions? Yes! Better than
90% of the other music out there? Yes!!!

All the sterility that a zillion dollar studio budget
can deliver? Yes! And, some contemptuously
unimaginative song endings? Yes - let's just allow the
drum machine to run on a while then quit it . . . you
know there are songs from Kamikyriad on that do this.
How about a real ending?

OK, also Mr. Fagen sometimes comes off through his
lyrics as a bit of a elderly perv. Forgive me, but
what is "Gaslighting Abbie" about? Let alone "Cousin
Dupree," and others . . .

OK, I like Level 42 better, and I'm jumping into
nuclear shelter in my backyard to await the fallout.

Hey Don, let's keep this going. Between you, I, AG, and others we can
single-handedly transmogrify the Level 42 digest into Burrough's own.

Now on the my rebuttal:

Rainey's playing on Aja is tasteful and subtle. Barney's is tasteful
as well on 2VN. It's quite a stretch to place either in the category I
was describing, full of the dregs of heavy metal and rock and roll such as
Eddie Van Halen -- guys who have chops but not restraint and the kind
of musical prudence I find attractive. Wayne Shorter probably said it
best when he described Miles Davis's advice to him. He said that Miles
told him "don't give away too much" (Making of Aja DVD).
Fagen and Becker had to negotiate with Rainey over the slapping
in 'Peg', because they wanted it to be subtle. They knew he could cook,
but they have always wanted subtlety. Check out the Aja DVD for a nice
discussion of the matter. Fagen and Becker have always been about
subtlety and clevel wit. In fact, Fagen and Becker often mention
embarassment about some of their earlier work, which was much more
overt and in your face, lacking the subtle craft in Aja and Gaucho.
Any player who records and tours with the Dan (Larry Carlton included)
knows the contraints they are expected to work under. Donald and Walter
consistently get the best performances out of the best musicians in Rock
and Roll, because they have the utmost respect of their peers and they
have a long history of extremely successful songwriting and artful
arranging, the likes of which place them in a unique category of their
own. I don't doubt that you find EMG hard to stomach for some reason,
but in my opinion EMG is the same story as Aja, Gaucho, and 2VN -- a successful,
critically acclaimed album that will find it's rightful place in Rock
and Roll History. The entire Steely Dan fan community is buzzing with
excitement over the album (and they are a critical bunch to say the
least -- JT and Nesselroth would fit right in). It's almost stupifying
to hear a guy -- who I know has good taste in music and chops to spare --
giving such a great album such an unfairly cursory appraisal. Two weeks
from now (and more listening), AG and I expect a complete and formal
apology. :)

Now back to Level 42 . . .

So who out of the digest was at the Sherwood Forest gig?
I did notice some guy near me on the front row with a Level 42 Digest shirt
on.
I got chatting to a girl who had come over from America just to see Level 42
play live.i could rant on for ages about the gig it was filled with top
class Level fans who you could just tell the'd been to many many shows
before.
There was a nice moment when we all started singing happy birthday to Gary
Husband.

Anybody else at Sherwood saturday night?
(Anyone thinking of re-quoting anything i've put and trashing it, their
response is not welcome or clever. That includes you smart arse's who take
the piss out of peoples grammar or for keeping the caps keys on,arrogance is
not attractive and it doesnt make you right).
Sorry it had to be said.

But nebulous vagueness is this year's black.

I'll happily go into specifics of why I think it's a great album when a)
time permits and b) I've dealt with the irony that a Level 42 greatest hits
tour of no interest to me passed a short bus ride away from here last
November, and yet Steely Dan have opted to stay home this summer.
