[[ Digest Admin note from Eric: Mike, most of those
disclaimers are added automatically by peoples'
outbound mail systems. Look at your Yahoo signature,
above - case in point ... ]]

Appreciate your response, Eric, but I'm talking about
workplace-related e-signatures, which often include
lengthy disclaimers. These are added automatically
only when set up to do so by the user and can be
highlighted and deleted in two seconds before hitting
'Send'. Look back over the last couple of digests and
there are some glaring examples where the e-signature
is about as big as the actual message. I know there's
nothing we can do about the Hotmail and Yahoo footers,
but they're tiny by comparison. Anyway, everyone knows
all this - I'm just making a point and I don't want to
turn this into a big thing. My other message (this
digest) is the Level 42-related one!

Cheers ~ Mike (Sydney City Milkman)

I don't have a problem with either Gary Husband or
Alan Murphy, but ...

... I always considered it a bit rude that Level Best
only carries pics of 'version 2' (Mark, Mike, Gary,
Alan). They make one album, supplying 3 tunes for the
Best Of and get their heads all over it! To make it
worse, on the inside cover it says "Level 42 are ...
Mark King, Mike Lindup, Gary Husband, Alan Murphy" The
fact is that, in relation to 15 of the songs, they're
only 50% right.

Just had to get that off my chest. Any thoughts?

Cheers ~ Mike (Sydney City Milkman)

Dave, Polygram added those 2 TRUE COULORS tracks,
in the hopes that it would make the WM album much better
for the US audience..since they were trying to break
L42 in the states. I guess they figured those tracks
were huge hits in the UK, so why not lop them on the us
release.

They also had plans to release all the albums on vinyl in
the states, but changed their mind after making test pressings
of them all, including a never released 'greatest hits' album
that included tracks from 'The Early Tapes'.

Oddly enough i never purchased the USA release, because i
had been getting all my level goodies on import when they
were released in the UK. So it wasnt until years later when
i joined the digest that i found out the tracks list had
been changed.

Greetings.

I like People more than Turn It On. Andrew, I'm certain Cindy Lauper (and
countless others) have many worse songs than People.

Instead of Level 42 covering other bands, what about a new tribute album of
Level 42; Ozzy Ozborne doing Something About You; Britney doing The Chinese
Way, Lenny Kravitz doing Starchild....

A bass album with Mark and Stanley might be intersting.

I also think Shapeshifter and TPOA are far superior tracks from TPOA than
The Chinese Way. TCW may sound uplifting and may be a real crowd pleaser (I
do like it, it's just not awesome).

As far as new Level 42 material, I would love to hear some new jazz funk.
Hard core slap with tasty jazz from drums and keys and rhythm guitar chords
and of course sax.

In the absence of this, I completely love JK. I am a real late comer, but
think this guy is a musical genius, who is unparalleled today. I cannot
think of one entry I would skip past.

I do like hip hop/jazz and house beat stuff like DJ greyboy (Freestylin), St
Germain (Boulevard), The New Deal or Bullfrog (hiphop funk). Can anyone
recommend other stuff like this?

Colin

Eric, you are right about Garunteed and the convulsions of the band between
Staring and Garunteed.....Forever Now was good and it was good because Phil
attended it. This probably meant a swing in morale that is never mentioned,
although clearly Mark defers to Phil and Boon for things truly "Level".

Phil always maintained that the band became blinded to artistic integrity
because of pop ambition. He only got uncomfortable BEING in Level 42 when
they began to try and write top ten hits...call it "selling out" around
World Machine, although some might say it began around True Colours. He
wanted a FUNK band, he wanted to be true to his muse and the natrual
equilibrium of Level 42, which was prodigious FUNK. He also said that Level
42 could have survived on it's brit funk niche with the fan base they
already had, and yet Polydor and perhaps Mark himself were more interested
in FAME over art. I am not saying change is not good, because material from
Running and World is quite good...but the problem is that the pop world is
fickle and easily bored. The inevitable result is that a pop band becomes
old fast, but a talented niche band can last forever. Few..even Level
42...can achieve what the Beatles and the Stones have..suddenly you find
yourself being asked "Didn't you used to be..?"...but before that come the
sad attempts to maintain the pop marketability that signify the death of a
band. The title track of Garunteed BLEEDS Level 42 self-parody. It's as if
they were trying to re-write "Lessons In Love".

I personally find myself listening to The Early Tapes,Level 42, Pursuit, and
Forever Now more than the rest of the work because of the musicianship of
it, not catchy hooks and 3 minute love lost tunes.
Being a Gould enterprise, you would think the rest could have trusted Phil
and Boon with the "direction" of Level 42. That is just my opinion.

Personally, I love Gresham Blues.
Possibly because of the era that the album came out ( I was 15 and travelling to school on the bus each day with the Staring at the Sun album playing over & over again in my walkman). It is nice sometimes to just sit and stare out of the window with a nice lyric-less song taking you along.

In fact, the whole album for me is just terrific. In the end, I wore out my tape!

MFS seems a strange choice for the "one decent song" award, but different strokes for different folks, eh?  To me the best songs are "If You Were Mine" (which requires a five-string bass) and "Lasso the Moon" (which requires Mike, not to mention an MB1 bass synth).  Perhaps those are the reasons we don't hear them live. :o\

Peace - Z.
