I'm sitting here, it's 11pm, 33 degrees, I'm tired and
there's no sign of my digest. And I bet when I send
this and go back to my Inbox, it'll be there and this
post will appear in the wrong digest!

Such is life ... goodnight ...

Mark Summers asked if Mark or Phil played on 'Pop Muzik' by 'M'

It was 'Phil'

Ben asks the following:

Danny quotes an old muso from the Isle of Wight, but I'm confused:
> 'Just shortly before the forming of Level 42, Mark King did a solo
> album. Although it is difficult to get hold of, you will probably be
> able to download it on Kazaa.com or a similar mp3 source. Although a
> bit primitive by the standard of later work, there is a good version
> of the old Cream/Jack Bruce hit 'I Feel Free'......not as good as the
> original, but nonetheless a pretty good rendition.

Er... isn't he just talking about "Influences" which is still
reasonably easy to get, and more to the point, CAME OUT IN 1984?

Ben I agree with what you say but I was just quoting from an e Mail I received from someone who was playing on the IOW in the seventies.  I did say that I had more researching to do and so far I have come up with nothing.... however I shall continue investigating.  If I can find a version recorded in the seventies I will let you know....unless anyone out there has an early copy.

Regards....... Danny

Jeff, the guy drumming in the video for LIAPW is
Frank Tontoh..Phil decided to leave again long before
the video was filmed. Frank also did some promo performances
on TOTP, and other shows.

His dad is a founding member of the band OSIBISA, and his last
gig was drummer and musical director for Craig David.

Hi folks,

Here’s a wee thought! I caught the show in Glasgow, November 2002, and to be honest, loved the fact that Level 42 had started playing the smaller venues again. I’ve seen them in the Edinburgh Playhouse, The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall but to be really honest and up-front about it, The Glasgow Barrowlands and the Glasgow Pavillion were amazing! I for one don’t like the large venues much, because I think you sort of lose the quality and the visual element from the smaller gigs. Being a long standing Level 42 fan, I love going to the gig, spending time viewing the gear on stage, and watching all the individuals doing their thing, you just don’t seem to get that with the larger venues. Don’t get me wrong, the Live at Wembley video is an outstanding achievement, and I personally wouldn’t knock that for a minute, its brilliant. I just love the closer gigs; it’s hard to explain. Does anyone share my thoughts?

Does anyone remember Annie i think her second name was Mckay or similar she did  a lot of backing with L42 when they played live and sung well with Mike. I think she is on the live at wembly video and just wondered what she is doing now if anything as i thought she had a good voice and it seemed to work well with Mark and Mike. Although her name doesnt appear on any of the cedits that i have seen.

No, really, it was. You can repeat the above four words until you're blue in
the face, but eventually the true horror of it will rise to the surface.
Once every couple of years I listen to it again to make sure I haven't
misjudged it. Last time I even resolved not to skip tracks when I couldn't
tolerate them any more. But I just couldn't make it. Perhaps it's time to
dust it off and give it another attempt.

After reading this, the question comes to mind:  Why do you keep Guaranteed in your collection then?

In a message dated 1/31/2003 5:26:48 AM Pacific Standard Time, David Below writes:

I'll share what is probably a common
story/theme among USA fans here back in the 80s when we simply couldn't get
enough of the band no matter what we did.

Something About You caught my ear in 85 as I was a teenager then. Great
song. But it was me renting the Live At Wembly 87 video out of bored
curiosity from the Blockbuster that (as Mark would understand) gave me the
bottom jaw-dropping "DONG!" that sold me on the band. I was blown away at
the musicianship and songs. It was like finding lost treasure. I watched
that video COUNTLESS times, almost everyday. I kept it in my schoolbag and
would watch it till the bell rang whenever a teacher had a VCR cart in their
room and class finished early. I tried selling every kid I knew on L42,
especially by showing them the bass solo. When college came, any musician
from any band I befriended via my own band's activities I would pop that
same video out to do the "No No No No... THIS is what Level 42 is actually
about" and watch their mouths agape, especially watching Mark.

Back to high school era though, I couldn't find out anything about the band,
I signed up for the fan club, with which I would get those little fan club
booklets about 9 months after they were current. I learned of Allan
Murphy's death almost a year after it happened, and it was weirder since it
took me forever to get the FAIT ACCOMPLI video. And what really took the
cake was I missed seeing the SATS tour by 3 weeks near my hometown (Near
Detroit, Michigan). I had no idea they were even touring (much less HERE)
until I picked up a Rolling Stone that was sitting on my school teacher's
desk for some weeks. I stared at that magazine for weeks thinking "I should
browse that thing." Finally I do, see the listings of touring bands, and
about put my head through the wall.

Man, the similarities in my life to this story are amazing.  I was too caught by hearing "Something About You" around 85 when I saw the band on Saturday Night LIve, only I was around 10.  Joining the fan club and hearing about Alan's death months after it happened and missing them on tour happened in my Junior High years.  Once in my English class we had to analyze poetry about war and so I brought in SATS and made the class listen to the lyrics of "Over There."  I rode to school with my friend Christina each morning and she ended up learning all the words to each song on SATS.  While waiting in line for our 9th grade graduation ceremony, we bided our time singing those songs in harmony.   I lost touch with another friend from Jr. HIgh and after I found her via the internet 10 years later, the first thing she wrote back to me was "LEVEL 42!!!"   It seems the fact that I was a Level fan made quite an impression.

Right now I'm forcing the FN album down my roommate's throat.

>>There's definitely NO official Chinese way video made.
Dammit does anyone listen to what I say????? The Polydor logs of everything Level 42 did, list a promo video for the Chinese Way. I suspect that it's a video that does not involve any of the band - or cobbles together some live film snippets. Informed answer - -there could be a video of 'The Chinese Way'.

>>Wow some really intense and interesting reading of late !!!! Loz, would you prefer Mark not to have>>>>regrouped under the name of L42 and just toured under his sols band title as he did between 99 - 01 ?
My feelings would have been the same either way. I like Mark's group just as much now as I did before it became 'Level 42', re-naming it hasn't changed how I feel about Mark's group in comparison to Level 42 pre 1994. It's a good concert and nice to see those old hits being played - but I mainly go to see Mark; it could be anyone else up there. So I don't revere these other guys.

I went to a concert last year by Deacon Blue (Scottish band), their lead singer (Ricky Ross) well, the man dabbles with genius. Basically he IS the band, he writes all the songs, and sings all the lead vocals (except two songs from their entire catalogue which his wife sings). My point being, if anyone had the right to take on the name of his group - it would be him. However, when he tours alone, he tours alone, under his own name. When he tours as Deacon Blue (and this is the interesting part), he gets as many of the original band members to play as he can, then augments the group with the band he takes round to his solo gigs. Here's where it gets more interesting - in the programmes, he always states that Deacon Blue IS the original members. Any members (and the group has 6 members) who cannot make the tour, still get their say in the programme - a short bio, and the chance to send a message to the fans, even though they're not playing on the tour! That's because Ricky Ross recognises that fans of his band, like the original line-up and respect their achievements.

I think Mark was wrong in the recent programme to intimate that there had been lots of line-up changes over the years. I think that really, there were two. Gary and Alan joining - and Jakko joining. You can't really call a gig here, or a month or two there, a personnel change.

That said, Mark DID try and get Level 42 back together - I think he's right to use the name - he worked just as hard as anyone to make the name, he should be able to squeeze every last penny out of it.
