1.  The Perfect Storm

So I was just about to leave the house this morning and decided to listen to
something on the Discman on the way to work. For old time's sake I fished
out the album Level 42. And what a cathartic choice that proved to be.

I commend those of you who may be suffering from over-exposure to swear off
your favourite albums for a good while. You return to them with fresh ears
and renewed vigour. Nothing that followed this album – the creative
differences, the fashion blunders, the misguided assault on the charts, the
oh-so-hilarious lyrical gags in concert, the line-up changes, the
catastrophe that was Guaranteed, the 21st century flogging of a near-dead
horse – nothing can detract from the sheer magnificence of this debut. If
five musicians ever gelled so perfectly to produce something so
comprehensively greater than the sum of their parts, I haven't heard it.

The disc was on random play, so first up was 43. Britfunk may have been to
the history of music what Iain Duncan Smith is to the history of politics,
but these seven minutes are surely a Churchill moment by any criteria.
Obviously it was Mark King we all noticed first, but 20 years' listening
later you realise the real genius of this album (and presumably we also have
Mike Vernon to thank for this) is the subtle, generous musicianship of the
others. Phil Gould's work on 43 is incomparably tasteful and yet
spine-janglingly funky. Boon's insidious nuances were never more perfectly
employed. It's damn near flawless. Even after all this time there are
touches which I pick up for the first time. King's vibrato notes during the
keyboard and guitar solos in Almost There, for example. By this time I was
whizzing round the ring road with tears in my eyes. Of course that might
have been the wind.

It goes without saying that some of the visceral impact of this album stays
with me because I was 14 when I got it, and it was instrumental in leading
me on to a rich world of music far more interesting than the New Romantics
to whom I had been listening. But it takes more than pure sentiment to
sustain this kind of emotional kick two decades later.

It was almost enough to make me want to buy a ticket for the Oxford gig.
