Hi people ...

... I've been out of the Digest loop for a while, so
forgive me if this is old news. At the company where I
work, one of the mags we publish is called JUICE - a
nifty little music title if I say so myself. In this
month's issue, there's an interview with Andy Cato out
of Groove Armada. It's part of a series called 'It
Changed My Life' and is subtitled 'Andy Cato - one
half of Groove Armada - names The Early Tapes by Level
42 as the album that changed his life.' Interesting
read - here's a quote: "...before you get to Running
In The Family and all that nonsense, they were just a
funk outfit. Phil Gould, the drummer, was just
extraordinary and Mark King was a brilliant bass
player, Mark Lindup on keys - you know, you can break
it down to musicians and they stand up as individuals.
They just had a real vibe about them and the groove
was just electric." All stuff we know, but nice all
the same. Chances are it was bought from a UK mag and
you guys have all seen it. But if you haven't, let me
know and I'll email you a scan.

Also, just saw the bit on the end of The Fast Show
where the lads are playing Forever Now and Paul
Whitehouse comes along and tells them all to shut up
and bugger off. Funny caper!

Lozenge Green: email me, mate.

Eric: I sent this email twice before but it didn't
appear. Is that because I sent it from work?

Fantastic crowd ~ Mike (Sydney City Milkman)

Originally Bilal unto us spake:
Out of interest, are there any people here who have never seen video of any
live L42 performances?

Then AG spake thus:
Never seen one, got no interest in seeing one. Videos of live performances
are a mystery to me. It's like looking at a photocopy of a painting. <snip>

Hi folks. First post to the re-incarnated worldmachine digest...
Like a photocopy of a painting a video a live gig may be. Enough people buy
picture prints though. I'd love some original art, but there's only one of
them (obviously!) and therefore very expensive.

Videos, sure, it's not as good as the real thing, but personally I love
watching / listening to them. They bring back great memories of the gig
experience, even if I wasn't at that particular tour. And for decent bands
there's a certain energy and spirit there when stuff is performed in front
of a real audience. You don't get that kinda thing from the album. I have
some slightly rough audio bootlegs. A Jamiroquai one is very compressed
with a fair bit of audience, but the energy in the playing is captivating.
Don't play it often, but there's something special about it.

Okay, the above won't apply to all live videos out there. (There have to be
some duff ones). For those who only want the real thing - that's fine.
I'll take it when I can too, but I (along with many others I suspect) will
quite happily live with the substitute in the mean time.

Take care y'all,
Mark (AKA The Bassman @ bassland .co .uk)

I'm not gonna hold my breath, although something new would be nice.
Besides, I don't think anything new could stand up to 'Innervisions.'
Perhaps my all time favourite album.

Although 'Heart of Gold' by Johnny Hates Jazz is a close second.

A fan site says hIs only release this year will be a VHS/DVD-only (both PAL) due out in October of his 2002 world tour which contains previously unreleased songs.

Hey there,

I hope she doesn't mind . . . but please send your
good thoughts to one MoWilliams of Nawlins as she
deals with what sounds like a tragic house fire.

Here's wishing you a speedy return to normalcy, and a
halfway decent insurance company, Mo!

Never seen one, got no interest in seeing one. Videos of live performances
are a mystery to me. It's like looking at a photocopy of a painting. I
suppose it's some kind of substitute if you couldn't be at the actual
event,
but such a poor substitute that as often as not you're better off with
nothing.
<<

Not at all, not at all. Particularly from a drummer's perspective, live
videos are great: they let you see detail that you'd have no hope of seeing
from the standard audience perspective. I have a much clearer picture of
how Phil gets those killer grooves going because I've seen his handiwork up
close on my TV.

Nightfly, Stevie Wonder's last truly great album was Hotter Than July.  The lone exception was Jungle Fever soundtrack, and I have a theory as to why.  Stevie was still somewhat young and identified with non-establishment folks.  Once he was very wealthy and could indulge himself, he fell victim to what many other R&B and funk acts did: they tried to go mainstream [Lionel Ritchie, Cameo, Kool & the Gang, etc.] and he was never the same - he was able to take too long to make records.  The only reason Jungle Fever was so stellar is that Spike Lee gave him no time to make it - there was a tight deadline so he couldn't add all those strings and flourishes that [IMO] ruined everything he put out after 1991.

I feel the same way about a number of other acts - once they became fat and happy they lost their edge.  Billy Joel is the most glaring example to me: once he married Christy Brinkley, he was never the same...

Check these notes out - which feature in the new "Collection" compilation CD :

Level 42 are in sharp need of reappraisal. Firstly associated with white-sock soul boys and their Ford Cortinas and later with mum'n'dad respectability, the group's catalogue has been unfairly maligned. However, with the inclusion of Starchild on both cult DJ and remixer Francois K's Essential Mix and house legend King Britt's Influences albums at the turn of the 21st Century, the current dance cognoscenti are beginning to realise the unmistakable groove of Level 42's early recordings. It is easy to
forget that the group, at present a footnote in memories of the 80s, chalked up an impressive run of 29 top 75 singles between 1980 and 1994. Level 42 always struggled with 'cool', being deemed far too un-hip and provincial by the snooty rock press. However, for many in the burgeoning 'Britfunk' movement in 1980/81, the band were seen as heroes. Mark King's Stanley Clarke-esque bass and keyboard player Mike Lindup's angelic voice made an irresistible combination. Add to this the guitar and drumming skills of Boon and Phil Gould and it is understandable to recognise why the band was feted in dance establishments across the country.

Founded on the Isle of Wight, their music proved an underground hit in the jazz- funk movement, which centred around Essex and the home counties at the turn of the 80s. Gaining a live reputation second to none grown men could be reduced to tears with oi' thunderthumbs bass style - the band began to develop a loyal fan base. The circulation of their early demo tapes (finally publicly released in 1982) and the early singles Love Meeting Love and On the Wings of Love resulted in the band signing to Polydor. Their
first new single Love Games, and the accompanying self- titled album in 1981 were nothing short of superb. The delicate Dune Tune from that album ends this CD; it perfectly demonstrates the deftness of their touch in comparison to the bass-heavy chugging of Love Games.

From their start in Britfunk, they began weaving commercial pop numbers into their albums, and as time progressed, a whole new audience listened in. Whereas the odd pop song had cropped up in earlier albums, the phenomenal success of Something About
You and Lessons in Love in the mid-80s facilitated a shift in both Level 42's market and their subsequent marketing. The band hit international stardom, with King - his thumbs now famously insured for huge sums of money - turning up at many prestigious events, including The Prince's Trust concerts; many of their original fans left them. Countless more came on board.

Their enormous success continued and all three of their 1987 singles (To Be With You Again and It's Over are included here)
made the UK Top 10. By turn of the 90s, the Gould brothers had left the act, and, although the bits kept earning, after the
relative failures of their Guaranteed and Forever Now albums, Lindup and King called it a day. However, with support from those with long memories, reappraising their fine catalogue, King recently reactivated the group for a triumphant return tour.

This collection brings together some of the finest Level 42 album and single cuts from the 1980s, including an incredible nine chart hits. Level 42 have spent their time in the cultural wilderness, and the time is more than ripe to listen to the tunes on this CD with fresh ears."
