| Please don't anyone spend $75 on the Spirit Is Free CD single - it's worth a third of that. Speaking of such, this evening I'm off to the West Coast, man. | christien de roo >Sorry about my english writing Hey, Christien, your English is damn, damn good. I was playing with your statement. You were very clear in what you meant. > No offence ofcourse but I think > Belgium is one of the only countries that have 4 > languages. And I think I'm doing OK. You're doing better than ok, don't sweat it. Although you are not alone: Switzerland has German, French, Italian, Romanish, and "swiss-german" is pretty damn different than "high" German, not too mention Englisch is pretty dominant. All that for a small, whacky lil' country. Laurence Green > I have done some very brief > calculations on the contribution of Mark and Mike to > Level 42 vocals: Nice "brief" job, Loz. :P Eric J. Hansen (aka His Highness) >Yeah, seriously. The party is no fun > without someone to (reliably) spoil it. ;) yeah, yeah - reality sucks, don't it. :P Too many smilies today... j __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! >Mike Lindup - Spirit Is Free cd single. $75.00 >This 3-track CD Single is signed by Mike Lindup, Jakko, Gary Banacle, John Thrikell.... $75? Is this for real? First Changing The Guard and now The Spirit Is Free. As some of you may have noticed, I have a problem with eBay sellers charging obscene prices, despite who they are. Nothing personal, Mikey. Besides, according to the sleeve notes, the above musicians didn't even play on the single or even the Changes album. They may have played the track live on the Guaranteed tour, but so what? It's like getting Lyndon or Nathan to sign a copy of Level Best - pointless, irrelevent and imho it actually serves to devalue the item. >Worst video moment? Weave Your Spell > - the outfits and hairdos were atrocious!! >I vote for the entire moment of the entire video for >"Take Care of Yourself". Agreed. A truly awful video - no excuses are good enough. I've also never really understood the whole 'playing instruments halfway up a mountain' fascination, a la The Sun Goes Down and Guaranteed. No offence ofcourse but I think Belgium is one of the only countries that have 4 languages. And I think I'm doing OK. << Offence?! Offence?! You are doing amazingly fabulously OK! Keep it up! And don't think of it as "we HAVE to speak/write 4 or 5 languages," rather you should be all "we are incredibly lucky because we have the opportunity from birth of learning to speak/write 4 or 5 languages." Most of us are stuck with just the one language. Consider yourself fortunate. Even Level 42 (an obscure band some of you may have heard of) throw in a smattering beyond English. ...Alex... | ||

| Aye Laddie! Am I the only Yankee (or Level 42 fan, for that matter) going to see the band at their Glasgow engagement (Oct 28th) ? Am I going to be the only Black person in all of Scotland when I get there? Someone please brief me on race relations in Scotland and Ireland (my plane has a layover there) so I can be prepared ahead of time. Thanks all! | Goodmorning or evening, This is a report of another belgian fan, well, well, a night to remember,Level 42 was ready for it but not the local technicians, especially the guys behind the soundbuttons,to drunk or to high(so I've red on the Harlekyn webside, guestbook).First we couldn't hear Sean's saxophone, then Nathan's monitor took a break and also Lyndon had a problem with his equipement(lineout I believe). after 2 or 3 songs everything was repared,at last.During this not so comfortable period MARK and GARY(yes in capitals)played very professionaly, imperturbable and very focused . We had local technicians, now ,the local heroes, throwing plastic beercups and other projectiles.Sean evaded some beer,we did and at one point a thought this really is the final drop,Mark had a beerholder(tray?)bouncing off his chest, can you imagine, one foot higher, then what? But hey,no problem, again,he played on ,the band played on ,and after all we experienced a late but a strongly played concert .Thank you very much indeed! I hope I made no writing errors,Christine?? Peter L | ||

| Back in my teen years I listened to jazz/fusion/funk music while all my friends were disco-ing their lives away. I have lived in the US all my life so this stuff was easily accessible. I hear so many Level 42 influences when I listen to my old favorites today. Level 42 took this type of music and set it to lyrics and created a mainstream for which I was starving. 1976 Return to Forever Romantic Warrior 1976 Jeff Beck Wired 1977 George Duke Reach for it (not sure what "it" is) 1976 Stanley Clarke School Days 1973 Herbie Hanock Head Hunters 1975 Brecker Brothers Brecker Brothers 1975 Earth Wind & Fire That's the Way of the World 1977 Weather Report Heavy Weather other greats from the realm of funk and fusion, Gap Band, Brothers Johnson, Incognito, Steve Khan I am in no way saying that these recordings mirror the Level 42 sound but that they are similar to the music recorded on the first four or so L42 albums. If you miss the old stuff give a few of these a try. Trent | ||

| L42 gurus, I want to celebrate something with you all. I am pretty much the average dude with a fairly intense day job, pushing 40, but hey, for the last 12 years I have been songwriting, getting together a home music studio, and spending the odd nights and weekends laying down tracks and tunes - probably like some of you . . . Well, my homemade CD arrived from the plant yesterday, and I'm very happy with it. Happy it's done, mostly! So if you would like to share in this joy of mine, and listen to a little bit of creative sprog, then read on . . . I have always held in high esteem the musical intelligence of the Digest members, and have enjoyed the discussions ever since I discovered the list in 1995? Truly a remarkable set of people, connected by an incredible band. So of course I would be interested in what you might think of my home-grown musical attempt, and I'd like to give away some free cds. Disclaimer: I know my CD has moments that reveal the imperfections of my home studio and/or recording ability. To do this thing well is a very difficult technical nut to crack - especially for a novice in the spare bedroom. That's what drew me towards the World Machine album in the first place, some amazing studio recording techniques and proficiencies on that album . . . Further Disclaimer: when you listen to my singing, you might think that you walked into 25 cent Beer night at the local Karaoke palace. With all of that out of the way, if you would like a freebie CD please visit my website "http://www.emeraldsoul.com" and contact me through the "CONTACT" link (not through this "grooveyard" address). I don't care where you are in the world, just email me your mailing address and here it comes. Keep reading please . . . Oh, wait, one more disclaimer: I'm a keyboard player so you'll notice I don't play the bass as well as Mark King, the guitar as well as Boon, or the drums as well as EITHER Gary Husband or Phil Gould - actually the drums on my CD contain some of the Phil Gould samples from his CD, hopefully tastefully used. So there you have it, sorry for the intrusion. This will eventually turn into a commercial enterprise (on a tiny scale) so I have no plans to ever mention my CD again on the digest. Please observe, I have not even mentioned the CD's title, and the project name only in passing. I'm sensitive to the bandwidth gods and I have no desire of being disparaged (YCB). I know other list members have commercial projects, etc. But as I've spent the last 12 years on this, truly a labor of love, I ask your forgiveness. I do believe my songs have something of a Level-42-ish architecture about them. One last thing - I must place a limit on the number of freebies - first come, first served - how many would I like to bestow? Why, 42, of course! thanks and take care, -TF __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. Bingo. http://search.yahoo.com | ||
