Nice post. Although I think with mail order there is a
different mentality toward shopping, certainly when I
do it I, say eBay as an example, constantly check out
what ‘other items the seller has’, so while I may have
just bid on a, say, a Miles Davis disc, he may have,
say, and Amanda Marshall disc I was kinda interested
in also
“save on shipping with combined orders” can be quite
tantalizing.

However, I would _never_ confuse the terminology of
“variety” with “literate”.

I know, honey. And I agree 100%. I too would rather
see a little (at least a little) thinking while
playing instead of some (near?) 40-something git
acting “cute” and dancing about while strumming
20-year old bar chords and stale solos. Hence,
Cover42.

Astounding how he has had a career (aside from the
modern day one where he clearly was packaged with the
youth market and it turned into Grammy Gold), some
Crossroads dealing going on there, I would imagine.
CS is one of the only concerts I actually walked out
of (although I have read books through some), but that
said I merely went to catch Bozzio playing with Jeff
Beck in a double bill concert, thank Zeus JB went on
first…

Nice pick.

No one can read aside from Mike, no? (and Gary, but I
believe this was threaded toward the Early Days…)

I think I could have phrased my comment differently, I merely meant to imply that they started out with a a jazz funk feel, and had to incorporate more stuctured pop elements to make it more commercially appealing.  It could have been worse, they could have taken jazz lessons from Kenny G!  ;)

 "Its been far
too long since Herbie's Rock-it days for him to get any recognition on
the street."

Have you gone out "on the street" and asked people if they know who
Herbie Hancock is? There are many innovative jazz musicians creating
music today (and many crap ones) but there are still some who are
recognisable by Joe public. I'm talking from an English point of view. I
don't know if the average American is oblivious. Everyone in the UK
knows who Courtney Pine is - and if they don't then they probably don't
know j*** s*** about any music. So there!

What's the difference between jazz and non-jazz.

Answer: Non jazz is where you tell the rest of the band what tune your
going to play before you start.

"I agree, and I wonder why. Are we the general public actually becoming
less
musically literate? Discuss."

Yep - cause now we's got playstations an' internets an' stuff!!!

7.  Collection DVD

Got my ' Collection ' DVD and cd set yesterday from Blackstar (only £13.99).
Extras are a bit dissapointing - all lifted rather clumsily from FAIT
ACCOMPLI.
Nice to have the vids on disc though, and quite unusual to see the lads'
full names on the credits...i,e
Michael David Lindup, Rowland Charles Gould and Phillip Gabriel Gould.

Anyone else think that the Compilation thing is getting a bit ridiculous now
? - I don't know of any other band that has had so many compilation cd's,
most of which regurgitate the same tracklisting ad infinitum....
I really am having trouble keeping up with them all, as having collected
them for so long now, even the rare German ones, I feel I'd like to carry
on.

I have to confess that I'm absolutely lost during this whole Jazz
discussion thread. Not that I mind of course, i find it interesting to
read, but I just can't contribute towards the discussion.

However, I can ask a general question: has anyone heard the new album by
The Thrills? It's called So Much For The City. I saw them in Glasgow back
in January on the NME tour and I caught them again last week playing an
in-store set at Virgin Megastore on Oxford St. Damn good stuff - great
tunes and a fine vocalist.

Anyway, they're worth checking out. Sorry for not mentioning any Jazz
musicians or L42...

Steve
