I should've posted about this a few days ago :-) Last Friday,
Laurel, myself, Adz & Shannon went to JT Schmid in Anaheim
to see Bass Bash 2003. Featured bassists included Keith Horne
(Don tipped me off on his awesome (lefty!) playing. Thanks again Z)
Michael Manring, Steve Lawson and others. With as the
grand finale Victor Bailey and suprise guest Omar Hakim!

Steve certainly is a nice chap! I'll get the pics developed one of
these days (remind me to get a digital camera haha)

the worst
1.Tracey - awful lyrics, the final nail in their commercial
coffin
2.RITF - epitomises the switch from musos to media whores
3.Chant Has Begun - a bit clunky??
4.Her Big Day - "punch you in the eye" (can't condone
violenece to women or bad lyrics)
5.Staring at the Sun - someone hand me the prozac

Current top 5
1. Romance - Had Al Green or Barry White had sung this, it
would be a classic
2. Foundation and Empire - awsome Jazz Funk
3. Woman - lift music to the untrained ears, subtle
4. A Pharoahs dream of Endless Time - wehey, f*cking nuts!
5. Man - just for the laid back bass groove after the spoken
"fall and fade away" bit

wonder what the mooted 2003 album will be like? who will
appear on it?

To jump back into the old questions: Best Song: Are You Hearing What I Hear?

And worst: For me it's got to be "The Chinese Way"...lumbering, and kind of
prejudicial in a vague way, not to mention lyrically akward..."who knows
what they know, the chinese legend grows". I know, for some reason it is a
CLASSIC. Never liked it that much, although I have enjoyed seeing it live.

Okay...if Level 42 were to cover certain songs, what do you think they
should be? I have always wanted to hear them do "Too Shy" by Kajagoogoo!
Mike could sing it, and there is a funky bassline in there.

How about "Catch Me Before I have to Testify" by average white band??

Mark singing "Virtual Insanity" by Jamiroquai would be interesting.

I would like to hear Boon cover "Armageddon Days (are here again)" by The
The. He has the voice...the rest of the boys needn't turn up for that. It
could be a solo release.

>From the Beatles: "Martha My Dear" or "Lovely Rita"

Stevie Wonder: "Superstition" or "Higher Ground"

I wonder what they would do with "Killing in the Name Of" by Rage Against
the Machine!

Alex, my friend, if you think you will test my resolve by merely taking my
statement "Stop aiming for the lowest common denominator" and turning it
around on me, "How else would I be sure you got the joke (I'm paraphrasing),
you have a long way to go. How pedestrian. It's School yard teasing my
friend. Perhaps living in the back of your Mercur has dulled your wits.
Again, I'll forgive you, but please...step up a bit, for the good of all men
and women of this world. You are representing Canada, do it with pride.

  On to Level 42.

IT's a little known fact that Mark's first band was actually a
collaboration effort with obscure Kioto player Matt Wang, the legendary
singer Nat Cole and Mark in an experimental Folk Hindu project called Matt
King Cole.

I think this might actually be a brand new topic (!) Anyways, I actually
do like Gresham Man, but it brings about yet another topic, which is
"what song do you think sounds LEAST like Level 42"? In this category,
I would definitely nominate Gresham Man, and probably also At This Great
Distance (always sounded a bit like Rush to me). What do folks think?

Thanks to Eric Hansen for the Steely Dan album update. An interesting link between Steely Dan and Level 42:

Back in 1989 I saw Donald Fagen at the Lone Star Cafe in Manhattan with Boz Scaggs(prior to New York Rock and Soul review) . Before and after the gig, music is played through the soundboard (often times favorites of the artist) The song which came on just before the curtain opened was Fashion Fever by Level 42. Ever since then I've wondered if the ever-grouchy Donald Fagen actually likes Level 42. Although I doubt he likes ANY pop.

Ok here's my least favorite mix tape I need to make to help turn off my friends to Level 42 (in no particular order)

I only know the other two in passing, but Manring is truly amazing! I
highly recommend his album _Thonk_. Mind you, it's a bit of an acquired
taste, but he's quite the slapmeister.

I have marked your answers:

You get 1 and a half points.  For those of you who may have missed the questions here they are again (and Alexs' answers):

Level 42?
The touring production of Starlight Express (Incorrect - band not production pse)

Q2. In what band did Mark King play in immediately prior to Level 42?
The Beatles (Not a chance lol)

Q3. What instrument did he play?
Bazooki initially, then he switched to drums (half a point)

Q4. Which member of Level 42 had a top 20 No1 hit in the 1970's?
Mark (incorrect)

Q5. What was the name of the band and title of the record?
M. "Pop Music." (Is the correct answer 1 point)

Hey, Micro-Kids:

Good to see the Digest is getting back to its
high-decibel norm.

Someone here mentioned how L42 after "World Machine"
got a little slick and overproduced on some tracks.
Which makes me wonder what L42, Wally, Julian et al
were thinking on some of the "Staring At the Sun"
mixes -- or whether Polygram folks were pressuring
them to sound slick.

"Heaving In My Hands" and "Two Hearts Collide" have
potentially killer grooves, but the mixes were so
gooey MK's bassline was almost an afterthought. And
"Man," tremendous song as it is (with very smart
lyrics), doesn't get a groove until mid-song with the
killer chord change.

I have to say "Gresham Blues" is a moving
instrumental, almost like the "SNL" closing music.

TCOY,
The Duke

Just a reference to the track "Rhythm of the Night", which I always
thought had a similar choice of synths and sounds to "People." Plus,
Mike and El sound a bit alike.

Oh ok, so you were talking about the production.  I would never have thought that the chord structure and vibe would be similar.  You should probably have said that the group, Debarge "ripped off" Level 42 though, since "People" came out in 83 before "Rhythm..." did in 85.    Hhmmm...

Hi all!

On the web digest a couple of days ago someone tipped us off on a recording of The New Gary Husband Trio which is available at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/jazz/jon3/jon3010803fhusband.shtml

I have even managed to download the video and audio, replace the audio in the video stream with the separate audio, sync it up reasonably good, just so I could burn a VCD of the gig. It runs for 39 minutes, and like the original poster said, if you're expecting Level 42 then you're in for a big shock. Now I'll just need to design a cover (which should be easy since the site also features some great photos from the gig).

If you haven't heard/seen Gary play keyboards before check it out.

Lars

I saw this chap recommended on that other place – probably by your very self
– but nothing that was up on eBay was remotely affordable, and I’d have to
go a VERY long way back to find the last time I bought a full price CD at UK
shop prices without knowing exactly what I was getting. So, other than the
‘Level 42 fans would surely enjoy this’ tagline (which, as a cautionary
tale, I’ve seen used about The Lighthouse Family), can you expand?

I find it totally ironic that Level 42 seperated from (or were chucked by) Polydor for not making a commercial enough product. Was it not Mark King's goal to get rich by fine tuning the commercial sound that made Running in the Family such a good  pop album and a huge commercial success. So why did Guaranteed fall flat on its face ? Had Level 42 got "too big for its boots" by insisting on releasing their version of Guaranteed and not trusting on the record company's instincts ?

What if.. Polydor had prevailed and they got their commercial 'guaranteed' album - Would it have done better than the BMG version ? There are the detractors on here who see Polydor as the arch enemy, betrayers etc,  but didn't  they have their fingers more on the commercial pulse than the likes of MK and ML.

Didn't the apparent blandness of the album and the abject dejection that I felt after waiting so long for its release prove Polydor right ?? I think so. If there was more to the split than that, then please enlighten me....
