Dear All

I enjoyed and agreed with the very sensible posting from Paul Scarrat
yesterday. Going back to the early days and set lists, I used to hate it
when they played Eyes Waterfalling. I'm not sure why I don't like that
track. It could be that it is tense, and a great relief when the bridge
comes. Maybe it is that it seems to get nowhere. But at least I have
tried to explain why I don't like it. I don't just announce that its
rubbish. But here you have an instance of somebody not liking one of the
early classics, let alone tracks from the "lost in the wilderness" or
"deaththrows" periods.

Most pieces of music seem to get somewhere. Consider a piece of music
like a drunk walking across a car par. He will enter one corner and
leave by some other exit but meander around inside, in some sort of
constructive way, aiming for his exit. Maybe the drunk falls asleep in
Eyes Waterfalling after finding his bottle and sitting down at the
bridge! In fact, it does sort of peter out at the end.

A note on gigs. I always used to look forward to October / November,
the time of L42 tours. Only a few people went to more than 2 or 3 gigs.
Any more was costly and overkill. But then one would here nothing for
the rest of the year as they have never really been played much on the
radio.

Re Mark being the band, I remember the master class, on which I thought
he sounded like the band. Then I heard the Mike Lindup comercials for
Yamaha. He sounded like Level 42 all on his own too, and not a hint of
slappy old bass at all!

Steve Randall

FLAVOR00-NONE-0000-0000-000000000000 3.0 ;
Guys, guys
I think a number of you are taking this thing a little too seriously especially you Mr Nesselroth (or is it Gould!!) Like a lot of you i am a longstanding fan of anything Level 42, from the Pursuit of accident days i think my first album was.
When they started out being in a band did the Gould brothers not want to get anywhere with the band, did they not want to earn a good living did they not seek a little recognition? If the answers to any of those questions are no then i'm sorry but they are lying. So when the band finally got somewhere they took there ball away and refused to play anymore. To me, as a fan i found that very insulting, ''thanks for your money it's bought me a house now eff off and go and watch New Kids on the Block or somebody that gives a toss''.
Sure, they gave the band a foundation but then refused to build on it so to their credit Mike and Mark started again with Hubbo and Murphy.
The result (in my opinion only guys) was a much more solid touring band that improved on the success already achieved. I liked the Staring at the Sun album, in fact having seen both Phil and Gary on drums i thought Gary was much the better drummer anyway.
Who now cares that Mark has the name of Level42, he bloody earned it and is much more entitled to it than the Goulds or Wally Badarou, who probably wouldn't even want it anyway!!!
Me thinks certain people have nothing better to do than sit and talk pretentious claptrap all day and get swallowed up in there own self importance.
Level42 produced some classic tunes to which provided a backdrop to my life and as long as Mark keeps touring them i'll keep going to see 'em.
So, take your head out of your arse, stop babbling on about negative, unimportant facts and go back to reading your Steven Hawkins science books or whatever publications you nerds read, and leave the rest of us to enjoy the music of Level42. Isn't that what we are on here to write about?

I have to agree with AG regarding Dean's posting the other day. Dean, I
think you hit the nail on the head with one of the most constructive posts
i've read for a long time.

At the same time, I would like say that if it wasn't for members like jt
then this digest could become a boring read. I look forward to the digest
popping into my inbox each morning to see who's written what. It'd be a
shame if it lost it's edge. As long as postings don't become personal
attacks on each other, then who's hurting?

On a sarcastic note: Pete Devlin, I have three words I need to say to you
mate: paragraphs, paragraphs, paragraphs.

Matthew Areford wrote:

Matthew, "hardcore" or not, The White Funky is an essential part of any
collection. I listen to it more often than A Physical Pressence and cannot
reccomend it highly enough.

Don, Jon Stewart didnt host because the Grammy folks decided
to just let various 'ny voices' do the intro. And seeing how
they only gave away 10 awards on the actual show, it didnt
matter. They said they were concentrating on the live performances.
I didnt see it anyway. ;-(

Dan, i understand how u feel, but i just dont agree with you.
Phil and Boon sold the rights to the name, such a LONG time ago,
when they originally left the band. So if either of them had a problem,
then was the time to speak up. They didnt have a problem with
Mark and Mike continuing the band, so why should we?

Any why is Level 42 a GOULD family band? I was always under the
impression that the orig 4 got together to jam, when Mike set up
a room for them at GUidhall? I didnt know it was already a GOULD
band, and Mark & Mike joined. It was Boon and Mark who were really
the friends i believe.

I'm sorry folks, but i dont subscribe to this 'MK will sully the name'
stuff. Regardless of what Mark, Mike, Phil, or Boon does in the
future, it has NOTHING to do with what the original lineup achieved
in the past. Those records are still on the shelf, and sound exactly
the same to me.

IN truth, i dont think many people who go to the shows give a damn.
A huge portion of them dont even know all the bands names to begin
with. The fact of the matter is this..MOST bands are gonna be known
by the guy who sings the songs..regardless of what else they do..
which is why i think Mark and Mike were always gonna be in the spotlight.

Obviously Mark's bass playing talent made the spotlight shine a little
harder on himself, so he gets remembered a bit more than the others.
I recall seeing DA LATA in Central PArk a few years ago, and 2 girls
behind me recognized that it was 'that guy' from Level 42 playing the
keyboards. (so the other members do get noticed as well)

Marks solo albums were not the greatest in the world...i agree.
Trash was unfinished demos, hence the name. One Man being compared
to the other level 42 ouput is pointless, since it came sooo long
after, and INFLUENCES was done so quickly. But i really like that
album, but realize the jazz fusion flavor is not everyones cup of
tea. For my money CHANGES is still the best thing to come from the
band, as a solo effort. Having said that, listening to Mark's solo
efforts doesnt mean that it's obvious that other band members were
more responsible for the sound, than he was. It's a band, so i think
all of them had a good deal on input.

Lyrics are very important, but so is the melody, and i'd guess that
Mark had more input in this area than any of the other band members.
If you look at all of the credits on all of the songs, he had his
hand in more songwriting credits than most. I really dont know how
much any of these guys contributed, as we are not privy to the
songwriting process, or what they did in the studio.

Also, until Phil does something else, we might never know. If Phil
releases a bunch of dud albums, are we to rethink his position in
the band, and say 'hmmm, maybe it was the other guys after all'?

My last point is regarding Mark's use of the name again. Lots of
people just assume he aquired the rights, so he could make a ton
of money on the name. Well, he didnt start using it right away,
with the exception of 'level 42's mark king'. My understanding
is that Mark's aquisition of the name, was only at the request of
certian parties who were funding the tour. Which makes sense to me,
if i'm putting up the cash, i want name recognition the band
had, because even if people know mark king, they know the band
name more than any members name.

I still like the original band, and i think the current band
is doing a good job, playing the old material. HOpefully if a
new lp comes out, it will feature the new band, since the old
band has no interest in reforming. BUt they are separate things,
so i dont compare them to each other.

just my opinons.

Win

...either true fans or true suckers...  you decide.  But seriously, I would have to add that if it weren't for the great social aspect at/around these shows, making the cross-Atlantic trip would probably not be worth the effort.  For me, its the welcoming and hospitable vibe of the UK and European folks that really make these trips worthwhile.

And of course we'll all add Fagan's Nightfly (has the double-incentive of reminding us of AG's more pleasant posts.) Speaking of Nightfly, I just read the other day that they are releasing (or already have) an HDCD version - that's high def CD, which far greater clarity/quality than the standard CD.  What are the chances that we'll see a Level 42 reissue on HDCD?

And MIkey...the audience sitting in the READING DVD doesn't spoil the gig for me one bit.. I'm actually watching the band on stage, not the people in the audience. ;-)

For me (watching the DVD), it makes it look like a meeting of the knitting club.  If the cameras were just fixed on the stage, it would be one thing, but they film the audience many times, and you don't do that unless you are trying to capture and portray the "live" aspect of the show.  In this specific [DVD's] case, it detracts from the sense of "live energy" that I sense while sitting in my living room watching this show.  Just kind of makes it a bit staid.

Jay Traci wrote:

I don't agree with that, frankly I find all 3 sub-par musicians. For them to get a record deal of any kind would be _far_ harder than getting some cuts on a "Level 42" release.

While I agree that it would be nearly impossible for these guys to get a recording contract, I'd argue it has little to do with their musicianship.  Have you listened to the radio in the past, err, 10 years?  Seems like chops have been replaced with T&A as the main requirements for getting a recording contract (not that I'm knocking T&A).  My opinion is that these three guys are good musicians... perfect, in fact, for the current lineup as a cover band.  I think they would be very suitable for a new MK-related studio recording effort as well, particularly since this is probably less challenging than playing live (although I don't have first hand studio experience to back up this statement...  someone will surely correct me here.)  Doesn't it really come down to the material more so than the mucianship?  (or actually, material and then musicianship are distant 2nd and 3rd requirements after the T&A, as mentioned above.)

MIkey wrote:

Antiquated, perhaps - but at the end of the day if I have to fly to London every November for the rest of my life to see L42 on stage - then so be it!

But Mike (referencing my comments above), would you continue to do this if (a) you didn't know anyone in the band, and/or (b) didn't know anyone else attending the show, and/or (c) didn't have such an effervescent personality that enabled you to make friends and have loads of fun if even at an insurance salesman's conference.

Again, for me, the draw to see the shows is at least 50% because of the surrounding social aspect and events (I.e., we've coined this "Levelfest" stuff.)  If it were just me, attending the shows, with all of the incentive being "just the show", then I couldn't possibly justify spending the time/$ to fly over.  If there were playing in downtown Boston (or even NYC), then I'd make the trip...  but otherwise I would probably wouldn't.  Of course this all assumes "same old stuff", no new material, etc.  And of course no pyrotechnics at the show...  (sorry, off color joke here.)

Let's go with an idea that Carl Mueller has been throwing around for what seems like forevernow - getting all the digest fans together and fundraise (get the $$$$$$) and make a US appearance happen - that may be the only way!   I am willing to put my money where my big mouth is!  Let the "BRING MK TO AMERICA CAMPAIGN BEGIN!!!!!!!!!"

Oh, groan, yawn....  I think the cost-per-attendee for this would exceed that of just traveling to the UK (or India for that f*ing matter!)

Re: Jennifer Norwood's "What Makes A Great Level 42 Song"...  great list/criteria!  Now all you need to do is go through their entire back catalog and rate every song...  :)  Then we can once and for all "rate" their albums best-to-worst.  And also, you could probably come up with a similar set of criteria for live shows...  I.e., % of audience standing vs. sitting, thickness (mm) of set list lamination, etc.  [ed note: am I being sarcastic here...  or not?  You decide.]

I guess each and every person here ought to question what Level 42 and it's music really means to them, and what, to them also, is most important in respect of what I've mentioned above. Lets differentiate "trying to please" and "trying to placate" (while making a buck in the process).

If people are yearning for new material (which is clearly the case), then I think MK needs to be motivated to produce some.

Two very powerful motivators for taking action, I.e., to produce new material:

1) anger (at comments appearing on this Digest)
2) disgust (over the realization that he's been playing the same-old-stuff the same-old-way for years now)

Two significant reason why people fail to act (again, in the context of MK producing new material):

1) fear (people won't like it, won't buy it, and I'll lose my money and fame...)
2) apathy (what's in it for me? I can't see the obvious upside...  $ or otherwise)

So, who wants to start a wager pool about when/if new material will surface?

Oh and before anyone immediately starts dissecting this e-mail and replying with their own brand of wit, you know who you are. I didn’t write it to upset anyone, or to have a particular go at anyone. It was just to add a neutral train of thought to it all, honest.

Neutral schmeutral.  Lets get it on!  Witness how many people come out of the woodwork to write thoughtful, interesting content when they read something that they really dis/agree with (myself included.)

The band is a Gould >family creation, and although Marks contribution is massive, MARK >KING SHOULD NOT HAVE THE RIGHTS TO THE BRAND NAME LEVEL 42!!

But where are the gould brothers & wally now? Phil has made it clear he does not like touring - so its getting less likely each year that they will reform with mark. Mark is entitled to use the name whether he "secured","purchased", whatever, as the rest have shown no interest in obtaining the name and good luck to mark. Surely if the current lineup carries on, its better than nothing.

Can anyone explain why Jon Stewart didn't host as he was supposed to?

Perhaps I can.  When he learned Norah Jones (should that be Snore-a-Jones)? was going to win all those Grammy's he decided he just didn't want to be part of the show.  I don't care if she is Ravi Shankar's daughter, she puts me to sleep.  If she's the '"best" current music has to offer in all those categories, we're all in trouble. Sweet little Avril was at least a breath of fresh air and I believe she either writes or co-writes her material to boot!!  Same with John Mayer.  The record companies decry lost CD sales and then put up for the world to see just how terrible the current popular music scene is via the Grammy Award winners. Stewart tried to disassociate himself from that mockery.  I've recently heard rumors that someday Bono hopes to be as big as Eminem is.  (whew - now I feel better)

He once asked me to step in for a business-runningevent as his partner was ill. So i decided to ran the lungs out of my body and finished my 10 kilometer in a sharp 38 minutes. ( i won gold  ;-)  )
After the event we had some drinks ( read; beers!) and were dicussing music. he told me he knew a guy who had a list of cd-bootlegs
He instantly phoned him to ask if there was any boot of L42 on the list and gues what; the white funky was on it. He ordered it, and a week later i got from him as a gift for my input at the running event.

Now i dont know how many copys are made but does anyone know who were involved in this ?
And if there are no so many copies; what would it be worth ? ( or what would you pay for it ?)
