| >I actually did spot the loops! Still sounds anonymous to me. And, I was just commenting on the fact that we have Phil playing on a new track - albeit his sample. Errr, Mark sings Tired Of Waiting - in fact, Mike thought it was Mark's strongest vocal perfromance on the album. As said also, Forever Now lacks Phil's influence and does nothing for me. > in the old days, a few of them were silent members - thanks to a select > few, they don't bother reading the digest now. .....what utter rubbish. We're not here to sit polishing away at the egos of Mark's mates. Some people get too invovled to be objective. During early One Man concerts, I thought Lyndon Connah's performance was average - he may have had his reasons, but that's what I thought. If we can't speak freely like that amongst ourselves for fear of being 'the select few' then the digest is half of what I think it is. JT I think we're in the same parish here. WHY on earth would Lyndon Connah / Nathan King / Sean Freeman want to sit down, put their hard effort into writing an album, and then have their efforts released under the name of a band which reprensents something so different from them. Surely if they wanted to make a go of something they'd want their own name too? Anyone seen the prices of the Forever Now 12"s below??? Are dealers reading the digest then offering up highley overpriced records based on our topics of conversation??? L()Z Visit our web site at www.scottwilson.com Privilege and Confidentiality Notice. I found this on the Popbitch mailing list - it seems the Popbitch team are trying to influence the release of this track. Anyone know anything about this? Does it relate to the L42 track? | JT, methinks you harp on the so called 'laminated' set list thing a bit too much. :-) Is this to mean that they play the same set-list EVERY year, or that they play a few of the same songs EVERY time? I personally think since MK started playing again, they have pretty good with the set list..the did the basic tour..and twice they took suggestions from the fans for songs..the READING set list is testament to this fact. Now last year, they sorta went back in time, because this was a 'GREATEST HITS' deal, so thats to be expected. Now, us being more than the average fan, we are gonna want a lot more diversity than a fan who only sees this band once or twice in life. So if we dont hear SAY, LIL, RITF, etc..it's no big loss. But any band has to be expected to play their major hits, because thats what a HUGE portion of the audience comes to hear. I was at the READING gig, and the lesser known tracks were totally lost on the audience, who i think were mainly casual fans who only knew the WM and RITF albums. Besides the digest, i'm not sure how many of these people took the time to come out and see this band 4 years in a row. Of course i'd welcome new arrangements of tunes as much as the next guy, but i think we lose sight of some facts...and this goes to the guys in the band as well, and their 'side projects'. This band is NOT the only band for any of these guys, with the exception of MARK KING. For the last few years they basically play 2 weeks of shows a year, after maybe a week of rehearsal. It's not like this was intended to resurrect the band Level 42. They are NOT doing a 7 month world tour, where a month of rehearsals was necessary, and new arrangements were worked on,or even new tunes are played. I think new arrangements are done for the band as much as the audience, since it can become very boring play the tunes every nite..but i dont think 2 weeks of 'The Chinese Way' is killing anyone in the band. My guess is if they do a larger reaching tour, they will mix up the arrangements a bit. (I can always dream) As far as standing or sitting goes...it all depends on the person. I like to stand at small venues, and sit at large venues. I went to READING at the last minute, so seats at the very back of the hall were all i could get. I wanted to be at the front, but the thought of standing for 90 minutes, at the very back was surelt not appealing to me, because i couldnt really anything anyway. The 2 people i attended the gig with all had a greta time, sitting in our seats, and i contend that the audience enjoyed it as well. Personally i have never heard MK personally complain about it, so all this 'if mk wants us to stand' stuff is crap. He basically made a comment when after 7-8 songs the entire audience stood up. Not once during the evening did he ask the audience to stand. If he did, they probably would have. At the end of the day, if i pay my money, i can sit on my butt if i like. When everyone stands up in front of me..i have no choice in the matter. And some folks cant stand for 90 mins. And MIkey...the audience sitting in the READING dvd doesnt spoil the gig for me one bit.. i'm actually watching the band on stage, not the people in the audience. ;-) These Indonesian gigs are simple a case of the BAND being offered gigs from a local promoter, and nothing else. It's my guess that the band was contacted by a promoter, and offered a decent wage for these gigs. Surely you dont all think that Mark King is sitting around with his agent, hand picking gigs? The fact that the band 'might' have more fans in the USA is irrelevant, if they dont get offered a mini tour, it's not gonna happen. I dont think this band is at a point where they can afford to foot the costs of brigning a band to the USA at this time. I bet if Level 42 did a saturday nite gig in NYC, that we would get at least 100 people on the digest flying in from the west coast. But 100 people are never gonna go to the UK for 3 or 4 gigs, even though in the winter time when these gigs normally take place, its cheaper to go to the UK from California, than it is to NYC. The rooms are surely cheaper, because NYC is crazy when it comes to hotel rooms, even with all the terror threats. If you are waiting for this band to come to your town, you are in for a looooong wait i'm afraid. If and when they come to the USA, you can be sure it will be NYC, L.A., Chicago, Vegas, etc..basically major cities. Gotta go with Loz,i prefer TIRED OF WAITING, doesnt sound like a MIKE song to me at all. One of my faves from that album. Forever Now is just ok to me. Then again, that album doesnt really do it for me, like it does for a lot of fans. The drum loops really turned me off big time..i always heard fans saying this was back to the funky Level 42, they had Phil back, etc, etc,. For me his best contribution was LIAPW, written with Steve White, and some of the lyrics..the drums all sound like a machine. Phils a great drummer, but cutting him up to 4 bar loops didnt impress me at all. Sunbed Song is very repetitive to me, and i was only appeciative of it after hearing it live. It shines live, but lays there on the CD.(just my opinion) anyway, later Win | ||

| Christien & Lolita said: "Are these dates and places for real?? They can play four dates in Indonesia and none in the US? Wow. I would argue that they likely have more fans here than there, but even if that weren't the case, wouldn't it be a little cheaper to tour here than in Asia? I am dumbfounded..." "yep, I'm totaly agree here ! I'm wondering why the hell Level 42 or Mark chose to go Indonesia I'm sure there will be fans but I'm sure there are lots of other countries who are waiting for years to see the band." There was this gig in Dubai (!) a while back, where apparently there are a lot of fans? :-) It's not ticket sales to fans, but venue owners willing to pay the money that determines where the band plays. I heard Mike saying in an interview that it became economically unrewarding to pack up a crew and send them across the pond. This is utter crap. I was in Dublin a few years back, and saw Yo La Tango play...Yo la Fucking Tango!!! This band probably has less money than I do in my bank account right now, and yet they managed to do a modest tour around Europe from New York. Small venue, but big enough for local fans....I don't see why LEVEL cannot do a similarly modest tour...it's not as though they would have to play jazz clubs and carry their own stuff...they could simply play in the many general admission venues in every city in North America with a capacity of 2 or 3 thousand. There is no excuse for bands like The Dead Milkmen and The Cramps doing trans ocean tours while Level 42 claims poverty. I think it is a matter of pride: Would going from filling Wembly in England to only filling The Phoenix in Toronto be too strong a reminder of their commercial peak being behind them? _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: smart spam protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail | ||

Some of you have been having a go at Mark King's new line up and are pining for the Gould brothers. Did you not know that over a year ago Mark tried to get the original line up back together? Boon was up for it but Mike and Phil didn't want to know. Mark also wanted Boon to tour with the band this year with the current line up,but Boon for his own reasons turned it down. Boon does want to write for Level 42 again and hopefully he can persuade Phil to write aswell. So i say good for Mark that he's keeping Level 42 alive. Can you not tell that he's trying to get Level well known again before releasing a new album, what would be the point of him releasing an album now that would flop. We all know that theres a good chance that the old line up will never tour again because the Gould brothers don't enjoy it.But theres a very good chance that the old line up will get together to write a new album and if they do it will be all thanks to Mark's drive. So if you want the old line up back have a moan at Mike,Boon and Phil and get off Mark's back. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Messenger - fast, easy and FREE! http://messenger.msn.co.uk | ||

| > yep, I'm totaly agree here ! I'm wondering why the > hell Level 42 or Mark chose to go Indonesia... > > Indonesia is one of the countries I also want to > visit some day, must be beautyful there... A little hint on Taking a Stance: don't immedietly refute the point you were trying to make by taking the oppostite position in your next paragraph (!). > modern cosmology and secularism. Of course, knowing > your religious beliefs, Loz, I can understand why it > isn't your cup of tea. ;o) Theism aside, FN is a pretty lame tune. Where exactly did Mark "just hear" that time will end in "20k,millyears" but at the same time just "heard the Big Bang "? Holy Grail, Holy Shit would have been more appropriate. >How are you to know > that everybody didn't have a good time IN SPITE of > those who prefer to stand I think the people that were "made" to stand up were more pleased that they didn't need to iron their trousers upon wearing them again... > I can't imagine that's something he says every > night. Not someone as opposed > to telling people whatever they want to hear as Mark > King. Yeah, my favorite is the "any requests?" question toward the end of the show. A band totally unready to do anything spur of the moment. Then when some git finally says "Chinese Way", MK says, "maybe we'll play that one". Maybe? Yeah right... >I can completely > understand why L42 has > not been here in almost a decade, the demand is > probably not enough to > justify the costs in running a touring crew on > another continent. But I'm > sure if some kind of small tour was arranged small tour/large tour, the same peoples are needed. And I think with MK's serious case of PopStaritis it would be highly unlikely he tote his own gear. And Gary is many a year (I assume) past the point of breaking down/setting up his kit. As all this (current) "Level42" stuff is pretty clearly just to reap off past kinda sucess, the US seems doubtful. With a new release I would't get to antsy either. However, if MK did hire some promoters there could be a whole different story. Or if he hung out with JLo or PuffIdiot... > > I will say is that some of the comments do get > back to the band, and > > whilst they are open minded enough to take it, on > the whole "slagging" > > can't be nice, I'm sure! again, one of the whole points of critique is hoping the source of the critique actually reads it. And to soften ones feelings, or worse, kiss ass, just because one _believes_ that said person/s are reading it, is really pretty bloody lame and hollow, and dishonest. > > Sadly we are denied band members input, partly due > to these rantings - The bands "input" is the music. Many a many musician/writer/whomever take the oppurtunity to 'talk/answer back' on the WWW, there may be reasons why noone in this band does. Oddly, when people get a bad review in a newspaper, the 'artist' doesn't feel the need to reply back. I woudln't sweat it too much. >I think you can be > > constructive without being nasty, some people > haven't learned that skill > > yet, obviously. Depends on your terminology. Some feel "nasty" is just plain negative, ie. Lyndon can't hit high notes. This is a basic fact. While it is negative, it is not nasty. > > but like works > of art (that is what > > they are afterall) what kind of distorted museum houses all this? >you have to study them and try > to understand where > > the artist was coming from - those kinds of > criticisms just show lack of > > openness by the listener. Some of the critics that are (probably) seen as "nasty" are some of the more intricate posts. Far far far more "open" thought than "that rules!" "I love it" and such. j __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Tax Center - forms, calculators, tips, more http://taxes.yahoo.com/ | ||

| In the early fan club days, I was at the Hot Water video shoot at Riverside Studios, Richmond and had a wonderful time. Level 42 all day! Anyone else there? I kept out of the way of the cameras thinking I would look too self consious. Now I wish I hadn't, if only for posterity. But my feet are clearly recognisable, due to my characteristic dance of those days, when not many guys danced anyway. (If you tried to dance in a disco then,by yourself, you were chucked out!) My tee shirt is glimpsed too. I must watch it again, as I can't remember if it was the blue one or the princess one. I am near left front stage. I had a nice talk with Mike Lindup too.
