Are you saying that we need a way to distinguish between contemporary Mark
King touring as Level 42, or that we need a way to distinguish between
Mark doing his "new" solo material versus covering old Level 42 standards?
Either way, doesn't any current "tour" or "gig" imply that its Mark,
with his current band, playing a mix of Level 42 and his solo material?
Am I confusing matters even more with this circular reasoning?? ;)

This is the "story" that I referred to a few days back, although I
don't know anything about an album cover that features this garage...
can anyone else confirm/deny?

I think this is an important distinction... namely, that while most
material was "funky", there are relative few tunes that I would classify
as actual "funk" as compared with other definitively funk bands ala
Parliament.

Speaking of funky, I'd like to say that the version of You Can't
Blame Louis on the Reading 2001 DVD is definitely FUNKY. :) I am also
preparing a more detailed post to review the Reading and Ohne Filter DVD
gigs, both of which I've just acquired. It strikes me that we've never
really had an in depth discussion on the Digest about the live DVD vids,
so I'm interested to see what people comment on.

Hey Monique, what are your comments/thoughts about the material?
I personally find this genre of deep, soulful, house/electrolounge to
be very enjoyable. So much that I've ammassed the entire Naked Music
catalog and numerous other CD's and singles. I particularly like the
more vocal tracks, such as Music & Wine, which is by now one of NM's
most notable tracks. FYI they have a great site at http://www.naked-music.com

AG's preferences aside, I have to say that Pelican West is a *great*
album... one of my favorites from the 80's.

Speaking of which, someone else posted a message with "What Price
Paradise" in the subject line the other day. I believe this was a
reference to the novel by the same name, but its also happens to be an
album by another great (lesser known) 80's group called China Crisis.
If you dug Haircut 100, you should also check out these guys. I'd put
them in the same bag as Talk Talk, another one of my favorite groups
from that era, whom I feel was extremely talented. And finally, why
not throw in Tears For Fears and XTC! These were all great, talented
groups who had their heyday in the 80's... and probably a good thing
that they were never ultra-popular, or I would have ended up labeling
them as pandering sell-outs like U2 became.

cheers,
Eric

MIght not be necessary, if L42 is being talked about
in the present/future tense, I think we can all assume
that itis the present/future formation.
I, along with you think it is absurd that MK is using
the name Level 42 we can't abolish it by ignoring
it....although until they do anything more than be a
mediocre cover band, I will refer them to them as
Cover 42.

> I wish Mark would work on some new solo material,

It seems that the current band of boys is, let's say,
not too inspiring/inspired (I have never heard of any
musician NOT writing anything in a period of 4+
years). And with the final product of One Man, I dont
look forward to a solo releasem unless he stops trying
to write love/pop songs...

Pickles aside, Cheryl, you may wait until another date
is announced, Cover42 does plan to do "some festivals
in Europe this Summer", so maybe something will wind
up being closer to you. Good luck.

Any divorces?

> I couldn't live without "Something About You",

I couldn't live without oxygen, but I'm sure fans
thought the same way with certain tunes and certian
bands, then, oddly, when departing form a Rush
concert, not hearing Tom Sawyer for xxxxxth time,
oddly, didn't kill them. And I think there was a
little band called Led Zeppeling that faired pretty
well without playing "Stairway to Heaven"...

Does a photo come with this?

yes, but this is indeed better than his physical
lashings, I still have bruises.

OK, for those of you that dont peek at the other
various sites, here are a few confirmed dates.
Although I beg of you, please, please do not go into
some of the insane wining that is seen elsewhere that
Cover42 is going into possible 'war' territory. It
seems people really think this band is so big that
they could be a traget for "bombing", or what-not.
Not quite strategic planning when trying to make a
point (however valid/invalid), "hmmm, yeah, let's
really punish the "crusaders" (remember folks, this is
all about religion) by blowing up a (very) minor
league band that hasn't produced an album, nor seen
the charts is xx years". I dont think so.

Either way, for those in Imaginary Land, I am most
sure that when these dates get closer, if the 'shit is
flying' the gigs will be cancelled. MK's sanity, not
to mention insurance would probably speak loud in this
matter.
So please, do not act like MK is being handed a rifle
and told to "take the point".

More typos than usual,
j

Almost There cd - £41 and counting. Still 4 days to go. Sweet Jezuz, who
is bidding that amount of money?

I have to agree with Don - tracks like HW and TCW have their place but they
do tend to get a bit boring - especially when you just know they'll appear
on the set list for every tour. Same goes for RITF and LIL. But I do tend
to enjoy live versions of Sun Goes Down, I have to admit.

Also agree with Danny - the video for LIL is an absolute disgrace. P*ss
poor. Embarressing. I have to say that the vids for HIMH and Take A Look
are probably my faves - stylish and slick, professional looking.

Dunno if I can bothered with the Sherwood Forrest gig - probably be the
same set as last year, and I'll put money on the weather being terrible. I
stood through hours of rain when I went to see New Order at Finsbury Park
last year - one of the most miserable days I've had in a long time, not fun
at all. And to cap it all off, they finished the set with World In Motion,
the England World Cup song - and being a Scotsman that really cheered me
up!

Have a good weekend folks.
Steve
