Hi true believers ... these are the 20 artists whose
CDs are currently rattling around in my jamjar:

Level 42 (various non-official compilations) / Paul
Weller (first album) / Live (V) / Go West (Indian
Summer) / Howard Jones (Best Of) / Queen (Rocks) /
Me'Shell Ndegeocello (Peace Beyond Passion) /
Powderfinger (Odyssey #5) / Incognito (Tribes Vibes &
Scribes) / Sex Pistols (Never Mind The Bollocks). On
the subs bench is Madness, Crowded House and the
Beatles.

Plus any Chllout compilation I can get me mitts on.
And that 'Lady Sings The Blues' double CD is the
business. And whoever threw Neil Finn a compliment is
bang on - he's a genius, and that's rare for a Kiwi,
just ask Russell Crowe!

Cheers ~ Mike (Sydney City Milkman)

5.  20 bands/artists that have shaped me as a human being
From: Leon Tan <vaztan @ hotmail.com>

The challenge of picking the top 20 bands/artists that have shaped me as a human being.. hmm some largely forgotten brain cells were commissioned to work on this one.. here goes, in no particular order, as they are all equal (with some more equal than others) .. I've also included "that defining song" in parantheses.

1) Level 42 - preaching to da converted here ("Lying Still" from World Machine)

2) U2 - they gave voice to feelings we had none for, and eventually helped us find our own too ("Bad" from The Unforgettable Fire)

3) Pearl Jam - helps you understand that although everyone sometimes feels alone & rejected, it can be a unifying bond & that's comforting ("Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town" from Versus)

4) Peter Gabriel - Met my wife thanks to PG, his music fills the spots in our communication when words aren't adequate ("In Your Eyes" from So)

5) Dire Straits - brings me memories of growing up here in Asia, and somehow it feels so right although we come from such diverse cultures ("Your Latest Trick" from Brothers in Arms)

6) Spyro Gyra - makes my soul smile ("Morning Dance" from Morning Dance)

7) Paul Simon - this cross-generational genius makes music filled with whimsical fragile observations of life that you feel like bottling up before it evaporates forever ("Spirit Voices" from The Rhythm of the Saints)

8) Tears For Fears - it's like giving you the keys to a soundproof room where you can let your spirit cry out in absolute peace & privacy ("The Working Hour" from Songs from the Big Chair)

9) Annie Lennox - this one I have to thank my wife for, Annie just hits the spot like sambal with prawn laksa ("Primitive" from Diva)

10) Sting - thoughtful, reflective, immersive soul food ("Lazarus Heart" from Nothing Like the Sun)

11) Kate Bush - makes you realise that often the weird & the strange made more sense than the mainstream & the banal, and is certainly a lot more beautiful ("Moving" from The Kick Inside)

12) REM - Stood in the shadows of U2 but was no less an influential part of my musical journey ("Nightswimming" from Automatic for the People)

13) Aztec Camera - drippy ballads that you wear on your sleeve & gives you the courage to face ridicule, here's romanticism at its most daring ("The Gentle Kind" from Stray)

14) David Bowie - for me, he's one of the original masters of music's alternative voice ("Ashes to Ashes" from Scary Monsters)

15) Counting Crows - Picked up where Pearl Jam left off ("Omaha" from August & Everything After)

16) Hall & Oates - Another milestone in my formative years in the 80s. Remembering the high I got from the first girl who smiled at ya in "that sort of way!" ("Rocket to God" from Ooh Yeah!)

17) Crowded House - Ohmigawd this band isn't a band, it's a phenomenon! We wept with the millions who saw the closing of an era in their final concert in Sydney ("Don't Dream It's Over" from Crowded House)

18) Alanis Morisette - Thanks Alanis for making the 90s brutally honest ("Not the Doctor" from Jagged Little Pill)

19) George Michael - Experiencing the growing up of his music makes you feel like you've triumphantly made a rite of passage too ("Freedom '90" from Listen Without Prejudice, Vol I)

20) Nik Kershaw - he's my first real musical experience. When the 80s kicked in at the start of my teen years, his music was an invitation to start down a musical journey which was distinctly of that era but with depth, heart & sans bubblegum ("Easy" from The Riddle)

you listen, right?  I mean, George Strait I can understand, but Tim friggin' McGraw???

I think you're confusing me with someone else's 20 list -- I didn't mentione Tim McGraw.
But, that being said, I must admit that "yes" my wife does listen to pop country now and then, and
has at least opened my ears to giving it a try (never thought I would admit that.)
These days, when I'm in the car, frankly I often tune in the Boston country station WKLB
instead of the usual top-40 junk.  Given the choice between C&W and top-40, I'll nearly
always opt for the country since the songs are better, the musicians are better, and on a relative
basis, it sucks far, far less.

7.  LEVEL 42 MEETS ACOUSTIC

LEVEL 42 MEETS ACOUSTIC, PLEASE NOT, NO, NEVER!   IMHO - I personally would dread that - for me the "electronic" element has always been a plus when it comes to the orchestration of their music.  With maybe a few minor exceptions - I do not think their songs would translate well into that "acoustic" sound.

Since everyone is doing it.....Here is my list of favs, still stuck mostly in the 1980's I fear!   On VH-1 (USA)  they have been doing "I love the 70's and 80's"  Tons of songs that I have forgotten about are starting to resurface, sadly THE NEW ZOO REVUE theme song (thanks Julie) was one of them, can't get it out of my head, pure torture!

TEARS FOR FEARS  -  RICK ASTLEY - INXS - JAMARIQUAI - GEORGE MICHAEL - DURAN DURAN
MADONNA - ALANIS MORRISETTE - GO WEST - ICEHOUSE - ELTON JOHN - STING
MICHAEL JACKSON (JACKSON 5, JACKSONS) - JANET JACKSON - LAURYN HILL - ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN
UB40 - THE BEATLES (pick a member) - ERASURE - NEW ORDER - OASIS - DEPECHE MODE
CELINE DION (minus the Titanic song) - STEREOPHONICS - DAVE MATTHEWS BAND
and of course last but by no means least, ROBBIE WILLIAMS (TAKE THAT)

I am sure that I am forgetting a few, but the above list for the most part has not changed in over 15 years, scary thought as I creep into the old age of 33 in a few weeks....

MIKEY

PS:  I keep forgetting who did the AWESOME remix on Level 42 THE MAX, but would like to know if VOLUME 2 is on its way soon - would LOVE to hear it!

Don:  I believe I was the one who mentioned the Country listenings.  I'm quite a musical whore.  Not tremendously picky when it comes to my listening tastes.  I also do some of the Pop bands (I won't mention names, so as to not dilute :-) the purified digest).
Sorry if this info darkens your waters of audio truth!!  :-)
