No, this comes from fans being critical at what is
being offered to us TODAY. I am little to no use for
rear-view mirrors. While some here obviously do, my
judgemnet is strictly based in the hear (literally)
and now.

I see no correlation between the two, except for the
fact that one could be a result of the other. Cover42
may not inspire MK enough to push forward with new
stuff, or "progress" as some seem to think the
slogging of 'greatest hits' is...

ciao,

I've got to agree with Loz really. I find it hard to believe that Lyndon,
Nathan and Gary have it in them to write an album of the quality of TPOA or
SITL or TC or even WM. I like optimism, I want Mark and his new band to do
well, but it takes more than a name and a reputation built on past
achievements.

Some bands can go through lineup changes and still survive and some can't.
It really depends on the members who stay and the members who go. Some
examples off the top of my head - Oasis have managed it, (new guitarist
and bassist but still Oasis because it's Noel and Liam who count), while
Guns 'n' Roses haven't, (Axl is not enough on his own - surely not the same
without Slash, Duff etc). I'm sure you guys can think of other examples
too.

It's a fact that Mark alone was not/is not Level 42. Mark, Mike, Phil and
Boon (and Wally) were a songwriting team who created some fantastic music
that - let's face facts - is the reason we're on this digest. Looking to
the future is all very well, but it's impossible to even consider Level 42
without involving the past, because it's why this digest exists.

As I said, I'm an optomistic guy at heart, (the glass is always half full),
but the current lineup is not Level 42, it's Grupo Mark King with a name
change. The Jazz Cafe gigs were far better than the Greatest Hits tour
because of this very reason - Mark King played Mark King material. Sure he
played some old school Level 42 too, but he's allowed to, as are Mike, Phil
and Boon.

The way forward for the 'new' Level 42 is to write some new material,
whenever that may be, and for us to judge them on it. But if they insist
on using the band name, then comparisons are inevitable and wholly
justified. I interpreted Marks message to us last year like this - new
material would be written at some point, and it would involve original
members where possible. Mark would then tour the new material with the
current lineup - am I wrong?

Anyway, hope you all have a good Christmas and I look forward to reading
your responses in the new year.
Steve

If im correct Mike came up with the sequence in Hot Water. And old idea wich was brought under the attention again.
The bassline is very similar to Sandstorm so this must be a very old line then ?

I was thinking that someone once had this great thread about the one man lyrics, about that Winetoo qetsoquetel or whatever the words are. Maybe that post is saved to any hhd ?  I thought it was quite interesting; considering the fact that he spent a couple of minutes to it and came up with this huge story !!!

Btw have a merry christmas.
Willem.

Loz! Well said! The man can be eloquent when he's passionate. (Ooh, er.)

And I liked your list of players:

>Allan Holdsworth
>Neil Conti
>Frank Tonto
>Gavin Harrison
>Dominic Miller
>Danny Bloom
>Lyndon COnnah
>Nathan King
>Gary Barnacle
>Kris Mach
>Steve Topping
>Sean Freeman
>Annie McCaig

but, I'm afraid to admit, I can't say I know who Frank Tonto is. Give us a
hint.

I must be missing something here, 'cause we _know_ that's not true. There
are keyboards a-plenty happening during many songs, and clearly there is no
on-stage human playing the parts.

That's easy: the Gould-ful lineup. All the post-Gould players range from
good to un-freaking-believably great players, but the original line-up was
full of drummers, and that's what gave it the rhythmic intricacy and groove
that grabbed me way back in the day.

My two pence worth on the Gary v Phil debate. One held back and played
economically otherwise the sound would be too cluttered and the other tries
to out do King in a competition on who can cram the most notes in. Give me
Phil anyday. Simple but effective.

For me, maybe wrongly, I always considered Level 42 to be Mark King. All the
others could leave and be replaced (as they did) and the band could continue
but if Mark left he couldn't be replaced and they could never carry on.

I'm probably being ignorant but I am a die harder, into them from day
one(ish).

Believe me when I say that watching Level 42 in Hanover, Germany  (audience approx. 300 hard-core german fans) and with the greatest hits being played I was in 7th heaven.

It was fantastic to meet the group after the show and the autographs I received and the moments I had speaking with the band afterwards will be moments I will treasure forever.

I am already disappointed with some of the comments I have seen posted here already....Yes it is fact that the original line up was the band at its best.  IMO I also believe that their early albums up to and including World Machine was their best music but if it wasn't for Mark taking the Level 42 'name' on the road we wouldn't have had the opportunity to relish music of a bygone age.

I have now seen the band live 4 times.  1983, 1984, 1988 and 2002.  I have never been disappointed at any of the concerts no matter what the line up was.  I grew up with their music and continue to do so.  Mark..... just keep on rocking and the rest of you...stop 'knocking' the new line up.

That is bullsh*t, even if it came from MK himself.  When I mentioned to Nathan that I liked having both him and Jakko playing guitars so that two guitar songs like "Keep Climbing" could be played without one coming from a backing track, his response was "Well, this way keeps the costs down, plus you get to hear the original guitar track from the album."

Besides, you think I can't tell when I'm hearing a guitar track and no-one on stage is playing?  If Mark told you that, either Alzheimers is setting in, or he thinks we're all stupid!  Maybe he doesn't want to get a Britney Spears reputation for fakery.
