Level 42 Digest for Monday, December 23, 2002
Hi All,

I'm only receiving the digest sporadically? Any reason for that???

The web-digest is over-run by Mark King fans and I am now finding it hard to fit in. Mike Phil and Boon receive all the respect expected for musicians who 'once played with Mark' - it's sad. As I said on the web-digest - Mark and Mike CANNOT write a classic Level 42 album - You need input from Goulds for that. Of all the original members, I am 100% convinced that person who had his finger on the pulse of Level 42 the most was Phil. Get Phil involved - you've got another Forever Now on your hands. Mark King, Gary Husband, Lydon Connah, Nathan King - a great night out, nostalgic to hear the old songs etc - but people on the web-digest are seriously trying to convince me that these guys should be considered as much a part of the fabric of Level 42 as ML, PG, BG? After 9 years of spending time on-line amongst (in the main) like minded people - little did I know that this whole respect thing for Level 42 could hop on the next train out of town NO MATTER WHO IS DRIVING! Were we deluded all along?

I gotta say, for me, Level 42 is the original 4 - I've a special place for Gary, Alan Murphy and Jakko, Wally of course. The only four other who I thing can say they were part of Level 42. This new band is a contrivance, a faction, a bastardisation. A good one though. But I for me, Lydon, Nathan, Sean go in this list:

Allan Holdsworth
Neil Conti
Frank Tonto
Gavin Harrison
Dominic Miller
Danny Bloom
Lyndon COnnah
Nathan King
Gary Barnacle
Kris Mach
Steve Topping
Sean Freeman
Annie McCaig

and all the other peripheral characters -  for me, just a footnote in the band's history.

Many now just see Mark as Level 42. I think they're looking through Phil tinted spectacles. As I've said before, Mark on his own has yet to prove he can produce anything anywhere near the VERY HIGH standards of Forever Now (OK, for me, the title track is the weakest song). His only totally individual solo album to date, Trash, falls below Changes, One Man, Tin Man, Influences in my play list. Even Mark and Mike's best offering, Guaranteed, is the weakest Level 42 album for me. Mark is a demi-god as laying down music for brit-funk, white-funk, disco-jazz - call it what you will. But that's not all the ingredients of Level 42. You need the lyrics of Boon and/or Phil, you need the immeasurable influence of Phil on the entire sound, and you've just got to have one Mike song. Leave to simmer for a year, then serve chilled.

JT, one of the reasons i can think of MK not
disclosing new material
is this. I think that if he were to do a new lp, with
major label
involvement, he would want the deal to be exactly to
his liking.
i.e. he would have say in the single(s), have decent
promo, and
video production, etc. If he doesnt get this, he wont
do a deal.
He prob doesnt see a point in telling a million people
that there
will be a new album, when in fact he doesnt yet know.

Sure seems easier to say no at this time, instead of
having to
answer follow up questions a million times..like when,
who is
gonna write, who is gonna perform, when is it coming,
etc, etc,
etc.

Sorry about sending that nonsense out, Yahoo decided
to send a mail with the push of 'enter'...classy...
(Eric, if you catch that, you can also edit out this
silly paragrah)

anyway,

hey Win, good point(s)...

> he would want the deal to be exactly to his liking.
>i.e. he would have say in the single(s), have decent

hence, no future deal. MK, nor Cover 42 has this kind
of pull.

>He prob doesnt see a point in telling a million
>people that there
>will be a new album, when in fact he doesnt yet know.

Very possible, but I would hope he would at least tell
us, 'well, I'm working on some things, hopefully we'll
have something for you (the fans)...soon (or add your
favorite non-specific timepoint word here)'.

>Sure seems easier to say no at this time,

'not a priority' is a bit more testy than no, no?
Kinda shitty, too.

Guess we'll just have to wait for Godot.

yes, under the circumstances of being a sub-par player
and having little to no vocal range he is super.

> ..where's your Christmas spirit ??!!

Well, you may be aware that his isn't everyone's
holiday, nor do some people feel that the markings on
a kalander should effect/affect their day-to-day.
Shall I be placating (ie. full of crap) instead? Maybe
in June...

Don, instead of killing myself, i went to the man
him self with the question. According to the leader
of the band, the only thing they ever did was have
some specially recorded backing vox used on some of
the choruses, to fatten the sound. Never any instruments.

Interesting.

I have to say that I think the rants you hear about "old vs. new",
"original linup vs. the new lineup", etc. all come down to one thing:
fans thinking in the past, and not towards the future. If you picked
any one point in Level 42's history and said "starting now, I don't like
the 'new sound' or the 'new lineup'" and stopped listening, then surely
you would have missed out on some great material/shows that followed.
Also, in my opinion, if we can't embrace the present lineup, then we
don't really have any business complaining about 'no new material', etc.

Also (just for arguments sake ;), if you had grown up hearing Level
42 all along with Lyndon, Gary, and Nathan as the "original" lineup,
and then only just recently heard the band with Phil, Boon and Mike,
which lineup would you have preferred??

Just my .02

cheers,
Eric

I totally agree, Lyndon is a truly gifted musician of MANY talents, check out the 64 Spoons album "Landing on a rat column" if you're in doubt!  He was only a young whipper-snapper when they recorded it too!  I don't think "Steeping" in anyone's shoes is particularly nice, the bubbles are quite nice if you use an effervescent tablet!  ;) - But you can get skin like a dried prune if left for too long!  ;D  No seriously, it can't be easy - and I take my hat off the to man for doing such a brilliant job.

>>..where's your Christmas spirit ??!!

Good point, hope you ALL have a jolly good Christmas, and new year!

Best regards

It's probably true that our collective perception of Lyndon and the rest of
the non-Marks masquerading as Level 42 is tainted by the rose-coloured
memory of the glory days. Perhaps if we saw these same guys playing some
non-Level material we would judge their musical abilities a little more
kindly.

>steeping into

You're so right; it is no easy task at all. First you have to fit the tea
bag in, which is difficult enough, but stopping the boiling water from
leaking out is the real bitch.

(Any votes for Lame Joke of the Day?)
