>Don't worry, Andrew, it will. Let me reiterate the analysis I made when the
"Greatest Hits" tour was announced: it's all just to make use of what clout
MK already has, to position himself for doing a come-back album HIS way,
instead of some label's >way. There WILL be a new album in 2003--I'll take
bets from any doubters.

>Peace - Don Z

Yes but Don, didn't MK say on various occasions this year that new material
wasn't his priority for the immediate future, despite the carrot that we
were dangled this time last year. If MK hasn't had the time in 2002 to get
together with Boon et al..I cannot see how they would put out an album in
2003, it would surely be 2004 at the earliest.
I'd also like to know what his thoughts are about a record deal etc...as
surely he would not fund a new Level 42 album and subsequent tour off his
own back again.

To all you so called True Loyal L42 Fans out there that are still living in the past, who want to compare Phil to Gary, and slag Gary off!

Don't you think Mark could get anybody in the hot seat? he chooses Gary for his style of playing, powerful, explosive yet subtle & dynamic, ok totally different to Phil's more layed back groove playing.(I'm sure the drummers amongst you appreciate both styles?)

Anyone noticed Mark's style of drumming on Influences & Trash? very Gary as opposed to Phil (not knocking Phil!)

Phil is past tense, Gary is now!!

For anyone that hasn't met Gary, you couldn't wish for a nicer, so modest bloke....(I'm sure people who have can back me up on that.)

I've said my peace now, let's try & think of the positives to talk about for a change!!

Chris.

>Dean, ROMANCE is also one of my very favourites as well. I've always wanted
to see it done live. Don't know that it would be the same without Mike's
lovely vocals though. And of course, live strings would be preferable. But
absolutely >gorgeous song.... sigh......
Yes, I agree, and that's the one big problem with this for me, and I've said
this before. There is a gulf in talent between Mike and Lyndon. I don't
really think Lyndon can ultimately cover any of Mike's parts satisfactorily
for me. Guess you are either a huge Mike fan or you're not, and I most
certainly am, I love Mark/Boon/Phil of course, but everyone has their
favourite, and Mike was mine.

Dear All 42ee''s

It is great to get the digest again. It is like welcoming an old friend
back and it has filled a small gap in my sad little life ! I even smirked
before attempting to read AG's piping hot comments.

Anyway, whilst I am a very devoted fan, from a very long time ago.... I
decided not to attend the recent near-missed hits concerts. I agree with
the comments that Mr K's recent agenda for the hits tour was "old hat" and
much preferred the previous set list, with a few nice surprise tracks being
included.

Also, I would like to plug my collection of L42 tracks, which are available
via MP3: download www.Grokster.com. Run a search for any L42 song and
look for the source of Monty (me). Then, run a search for More by "User"
to find a wealth of songs on my pc available to download. I am constantly
looking for new songs to add and share, so please let me know if you have
anything to add to my archive.

Thanks
Steve

Without getting all teary-eyed about it, I must admit that I really missed
this little community. [sniff] You're a wee ray of sunlight in these
dreary northern days.

Okay, so who can tell me about the playing-to-the-backing-tracks thing? Am
I to infer that Mark and the lads have taken the big leap from playing with
a sequencer (for keyboards and a bit of percussion) to playing to
recordings including vocals?!

I mean, I expect people like Brittney and N Sync to do that--it's a bitch
to sing well and pull off all that choreography simultaneously--but Mark?
Say it isn't so!

Well, it's all a little heated in here, is it not? Let's not forget that we are all here for a common reason, the fact that at some point we found that the music of Level 42 had become important to us. We must all remember that particular moment, that track, be it from the 'B' side of some early single release (The Return Of The Handsome Rugged Man, maybe?) or from one of the albums , and contemplate the lyrics and music that made us stop and think, 'I like that', in the first place. Mark King has earned the right to say anything about HIS music, he is the one, along with Mike, Phil, Boon and Wally who made all that music we still have today, and the reasons we sit here now reading and writing on this page, possible. They are Level 42, and when you play the debut album, or the last album, stop and listen hard to it. That the album is well conceived, well produced, and provides pleasure is what the band intended. That it is also thought provoking is not a by-product, it is purely something that I have found comes easy to Level 42. We all have our 'own' favourites, that's because we are individuals, and maybe why some of us are here defending 'our' band! 2003 Don? I'm counting buddy!

I think Mr Goodwin is in the "extremely advanced junk mail" category - we are working on that filter, but finding the English colloquialisms too hard for the American developers to decipher - especially the crap football team related ones...  Sorry, soccer.  Damn.

Also, can anyone tell me what they are going to do with 2 months of free asterisks?

Heated...?  HEATED???!!!  Not nearly HEATED enough, I'd say!

This is what I reminisce about the old Digest...  HEATED discussion
with a bit of fair-play thrown in for good measure (and of course the
good-natured folks, AG excluded).

>Hi All Anyone willing to buy AG a new calculator for Christmas then!!

Well, the set list I saw was something like this:

Almost There, Love Games, To Be With You Again, Seven Days, Dream Crazy,
Children Say, Its Over, The Sunbed Song, Kansas City Milkman, The Sun Goes
Down, Starchild, Running In The Family, Lessons In Love, Something About
You, Hot Water and The Chinese Way.

I make that 11 hits of one size or another, plus if you add in Kansas City
Milkman (not a single but absolutely flogged to death live over the years),
three quarters of that list fits my definition. Even Almost There is hardly
the most obscure of tracks in terms of concert performance. Compare that to
the set list from last year. Compare closing with Foundation & Empire last
year and (eek) The Chinese Way this year. I'm not saying it's a bad set
list, I'm just saying it's one designed in essence to appeal to people who
own one Greatest Hits CD. And there are more of them than there are of me,
so good luck to him and them.

Such ingenuous optimism from one so bald.

>There WILL be a new album in 2003--I'll take bets from any doubters.

I'll have a piece of that action. There's more chance of the Steely Dan
album which is allegedly 'practically in the can' seeing the light of day
than Mark King dusting off the creative juices.

I'm not sure if this is an insult or not, but I'm quite happy to take it as
such. Come one, come all.

Weeeeeellll... we are doing this little shindig in February... with
instruments, equipment, musicians and vocalists... why couldn't we do
it ourselves? I'd certainly be up for it, Romance is a great song.

BTW, for those who haven't checked out the Web Digest recently - I'm
having a Levelfest at my house in Glendale California on Saturday
February 8th, 2003. As stated above, there will be jamming. Come one
come all, email me or check out the thread on the web digest for more
details.
