Does anyone else remember a French & Saunders sketch that featured Mark King
(with Mark Knopfler, Dave Gilmour, Gary Moore, Lemmy) where they couldn't
play guitar using a Ralph McTell tuition book because there were no pictures
with dots showing where your fingers go?

This was about 12-13 years ago.

I'm sure I didn't dream it but my friend disagrees and says there was no
such sketch.

Happy new year!

I'm not sure if this topic has been discussed at any length before,
but here's my "hypothetical" in three parts:

1) why do you think Mark hasn't hooked up with any other musicians
to write/perform new material? Mike and Phil have both made this
transition, and of course Gary, Jakko and other non-original-lineup come
from a diverse background in the first place, and have continued to stay
active with other projects.

2) if Mark *were* to hook up with other people, who do you think would
be appropriate and desirable? (be reasonable here... don't just give
me the "dream band" lineups!)

3) what kind of other music/styles/genres would Mark excel at? The
aforementioned other band members have all demonstrated their individual
versatilities at numerous other styles of music, so what about Mark?

cheers,
Eric

What the heck is acceptable then? This is frustrating.

Subject: REJECTED QUOTED TEXT: Answer to Danny's Question

Dear Bruceowens,

A message you sent to Level 42 Digest mailing list quoted too much text from
a previous Digest mailing or individual message(s). Although it is fine to
quote parts of messages when you post to the Digest, **PLEASE** do not
simply reply to the Digest and quote the entire thing! Doing so wastes
space and bandwidth, which is why the mailing list attempts to suppress
these messages.

Please re-post your message with the quoted part(s) trimmed or removed.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Level 42 Digest for Thursday, December 26, 2002
Hhhhm

>>One Man - great song, written by Mark King solo, I believe? So let's recognize that more great material may be *possible*

- Can't wait!

>>In ancient Mexican mythology, "Quetzalcoatl" was the god of the Air. He presided over commerce, and was said to have predicted the coming of the Spaniards.
>>Sort of a feathered serpent kind of thing. Is this the lyric in One Man?

More importatntly, who wrote the lyrics to that?!  This proves many peoples point that "level 42" as it is collectively was generally the work of King, Lindup & the brothers Gould.  In my opinion there has to be some input from the others to make it a Level 42 album, to be in context with the band name.  Oh yes, don't forger Mr Badarou!

However, you could argue that post RTF L42 was not this lineup, but generally it can be said that input from some or all of those members-past was in there for most of the following albums, except I guess Guaranteed?  You have Boon lyrics on SATS, and Phil on FN.  Guaranteed was the only album where they had to 'ship in' songwriting. - Not a bad album by most accounts, (I love it) and some lovely guitar and songs, but it's definitely not in the same vein as those before and after.  I guess the album was a commercial flop, but it's interesting to wonder what would have happened if they had continued with that set up?!  What do you guys think?

Hope you all had a great Christmas.

Best regards

Dave Jacobs

> Do you not think that when a band such as Level 42
> who have been so successful after so many years

Not sure what your definition of "successful" is...

> looses a member and someone steps in to take their
> place it must take a lot of guts and be very scary

No. Especially when these peopel are in another band
and then the title merely changes, so it is more the
name that 'steps in' than the um, member.

> They all bring their own individuality to the songs

not really.

> Near the end of the 'Something about you' video
> whilst Mark is sitting on the train he 'mimes' some
> words. I have never been able to decipher the
> message .....anyone know the answer?

I think this is the most popular question of all time.
I dont remember what bit of lyric it is, but it is
simply just a snip from a clip that could have been
inserted at the right lyric time, and then there would
have been no questions. "we're only human after all'
may be the bit.
Or maybe he says, 'one day I hope that this band falls
apart so I can get a Cover band going; my brother will
be the guitarist and the family dog will be the
mascot...'
maybe.
