I was always prepared to give a tune a good listen to the albums when they first came out - some had to grow on me, whilst others I loved right from the start. Sadly, I'm still waiting for 'Guaranteed' and 'Forever Now' to grow on me (mind you, FN is marginally better than the other one). Which tunes grabbed YOU right off? (no smutty innuendos, Alex!). By the way, I might have a bit of trouble coping with M15 while I'm still dealing with God and Santa. Don't know about Slipstream, but sadly Dick Morrissey died towards the end of last year after a long battle against a particularly nasty cancer. He played his last public performance a few days before his death. ------------------------------ Subject: Greatest Level42 drummer From: angela armstrong Date: Tue, 9 Jan 2001 06:07:11 -0800 (PST) I agree that Phil Gould was the best drummer Level 42 had. Though I do like Gary's style, it lacked that extra spark that Phil's style of drumming had. Mark King once said that Phil's playing was a bit off beat, but I think that's what made his style and Level 42 so unique. A perfect example of who is better is the live version of 'Hot Water". Gary plays good, but it seems like he is just going through the motions and playing very mechanically. On the other hand, Phil put more emotion into every beat. Don't get me wrong, I like them both, it's just that Phil is slightly better in my opinion. t.t.f.n., Angela __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Here's a list of every album I own: http://www.jamesrsutton.com/collection.htm Just click on "musiclist.txt". I have everything compressed. We can just trade via my ftp server. Thanks! Anybody know how many fillings mark has had over the years? I have Trash, it's signed, it's number ..er I forget. It's good, but more importantly it's different, you're not going to get that type of treat from Ricky Martin or Brittney Spears (Mostly becuase you can't get a lot of money from it, but realistically because they don't have old half finished songs, but maybe we can get old cuts from the 80 year old bearded jewish guys that right their songs in some marketing office.) I digress, let's see, I have some questions for you: If polydor re-released the albums would you buy them? Does anyone have any ringtones for the nokia 530000000? Why does MArk wear tape on his thumb? What does Phil say during Hot Water on LIve at Wembley? IS Holland really that bad? Her big day > >and Set me up were (for me) the only songs that resembled Level 42 and were > >of any quality. > It's funny that you should choose the two songs that for my tastes wreck > an otherwise fairly good album. I really agree with this! (the response that is). 'Guaranteed' I always saw as a bit of a 'recovery' album for L42 (and I too am a fan of the earlier albums first and foremost), but 'Her Big Day' always bored me stupid - it plods along like it's wearing wellies full of cement. There are very few L42 tracks that make me reach for the 'skip' button on the CD remote, but this one does it every time - it seems like a bit of a filler to me. On a totally different note, for true fanatics of any subject (in the UK), I've discovered a piece of free software which enables you to download and view UK TV listings for about 200 terrestrial and cable channels from the Net up to two weeks in advance, and scan them using search terms. Consequently if L42 (or any other subject you're looking out for) is mentioned in listings for any forthcoming programme you will know well in advance. I use it for different reasons as I am in the TV business, but find it absolutely brilliant and very user-friendly - so much so I've put it on my own website, at http://nop.members.beeb.net/digidnld.htm Neil ------------------------------ Subject: Gary vs Phil From: "Neil Percival" Date: Tue, 9 Jan 2001 14:09:53 -0000 > Having read the 'greatest L42 drummer' discussion with interest I (myself a > drummer) wish to add my own two pennieth on the subject. For me Phil Gould > stands head and shoulders over Gary Husband. Agree with this too! Not in terms of technical ability necessarily, but in terms of feel and drive they are quite different ('different' is the word rather than 'better'). I remember seeing L42 at the City Hall in Newcastle when 'Guaranteed' had just come out (I think). On the whole the gig was not good because it's a tough venue and the audience were crap, but it was the first time I saw Gary play with them live, and I remember Mark introducing him as the 'explosive' Gary Husband and thought - uh oh! At the time, I remember thinking L42 seemed to be getting 'rockier' in both image and sound if that gig was anything to go by (all that black leather Mark was wearing) and I wasn't too keen on what seemed like a different direction. The rest of the audience seemed a bit confused as well! (The other thing I remember about that gig is Mark introducing a track from Guaranteed, expecting a response from the audience, getting none, looking bemused and saying, 'You haven't bought it, have you, you bastards?' or words to that effect!) I'm not sure how much is down to his playing and how much is down to evolving recording techniques and styles, but Gary's playing always sounded much more aggressive and away from Phil's funky style to something almost more suited to rock music. I loved Phil's 'twitchiness' if that makes any sense - he adds so much to the music, especially by his subtleties with the hi-hat as previous posters have noticed. He seemed to have a lighter touch and a groovier one all round. Gary's main personal contribution to 'Guaranteed' was 'If You Were Mine' which I really liked actually, but it certainly had a lot of aggression to it - compare this with, for example, 'Sleep On My Heart' from World Machine with that drum riff on the start - I can't imagine Gary ever coming up with that. This is not to detract in any way from Gary's ability - having seen him again at the Jazz Café I couldn't find fault with his performance, the whole gig was brilliant - but L42 were never going to sound quite the same without Phil's drumming, for me anyway. Now I have been able to find it, my speakers have packed in!!! Typical! Another favour I would like to ask, is if anyone knows where I can get a copy of The Pier interview?! Id love to have a copy especially as I was there when it was filmed. Anyone able to help me? I can send a cheque for the costs etc..... Also, Mike Bartlett, I dont think we have been in contact before, but if you want to, email me, maybe we can swap Island stories!?! Best wishes Jen xxx From the IOW ------------------------------ Subject: Des'ree From: "Nigel Collier" Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 10:18:43 -0000 I heard a track on the radio the other day and it's been going around my head non-stop. The presenter didn't give me the name of the artist or track and I've been running a search on the web but with no luck. I was about to ask the Digest if they had any suggestions...then I found what I was looking for. The track is called 'What's Your Sign?' from the album 'Supernatural' by Des'ree. She'll probably be old news to a lot of Digesters and I'd heard of her before but never actually listened to any of her stuff. Her voice is AMAZING - she did the title track from the movie "Life" (Eddie Murphy - strange movie, couldn't decide whether it was Stir Crazy or Shawshank Redemption). The track Supernatural sounds very much like a late 90s movie track itself - the drumming and bass is simple, crisp and funky and Des'ree's voice is beautiful - I LOVE it when she hits the low notes. I'm off to buy the album today, and while I'm there - here's another recommendation - I'm going to pick up Corduroy's 'DadManCat' to replace my vinyl. I've plugged this album many-a-time on the Digest but it's worth it - there is no better acid jazz album. Cheers Nigel
