I'm sure the boys had varied taste in music which developed the sound that we knew and loved. I've listened to albums which I thought were great at the time, due to moods, taste, who I'd just been dumped by, which I do not think are so good now and vica versa, so here goes my current top 10 in no particular order. I'd love it if some of you would be good enough to view my band's website. We have been heavily influenced by Level 42/Toto/Steely Dan and write original material with some of their ideas in mind. http://www.santacarla.co.uk Please have a look and don't hesitate to get back to be if you like what you see (or even if you don't!) Thanks, Tommy. ------------------------------ Subject: Top ten grooves 2 make ya groove! From: "Funky T" Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 15:08:15 -0000

Here's ten that can move the mind, the heart, the soul and the body:

1) Santana "Moonflower" (Timeless latin jazz fusion from Senor Carlos and the band)

2) Level 42 "A Physical Presence" (Jazz funk fusion...raw and uncut!)

3) David Sancious & Tone "True Stories" (To hear the incredible sounds that David can pull from a synthesizer is both a joy and a revelation).

4) Mahavishnu Orchestra "Birds Of Fire" (A jazz fusion classic. John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham, Jan Hammer, Rick Laird and Jerry Goodman. Need I say more?)

5) Return To Forever "Where Have I Known You Before" (The classic fusion quartet of doom!)

6) George Duke "Reach For It" (George's synthesizer textures should be the eight, ninth and tenth wonders of the world)

7) Stanley Clarke "School Days" (An electric bass classic)

8) Miles Davis "Decoy" (Miles runs down how the funk should be done)

9) Weather Report "Mysterious Traveler" (Ranks with "Heavy Weather" as a classic)

10) Billy Cobham "Life & Times" (Cobham, George Duke, Doug Rauch and John Scofield. It can't get any mo' hectic that this).

And of course, I couldn't stop at just ten, so here's five mo':

James Brown "Star Time"

Sly & The Family Stone "Anthology"

Parliament "Mothership Connection"

Slave "The Best Of Slave"

The Brand New Heavies "Brother Sister"

Party on bobba!

And in no particular order: 1) Toto - IV 2) Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill 3) Level 42 - World Machine 4) Simon Phillips - Another Lifetime 5) Yellowjackets - Greenhouse 6) Flim and the BB's - New Pants 7) Weather Report - Heavy Weather 8) Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius 9) Jaco Pastorius - Word of Mouth 10) Mark King - Influences I also think the Top 10 Lists are great as they give us some insight to the musical tastes of our fellow digesters. Tom Sewell ------------------------------ Subject: Level Related vs. the scroll button From: "Sean D. Green" Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 09:15:52 -0600 Friends and Digesters, Well...why not just jump right into this stew - I say. I know that some are making comments about keeping non level 42 postings off the site. Amazing how this kind of thing comes back full circle over and over. For those of you that are a little miffed about the non level content to this digest, please understand many of the reasons why. Most digesters start these threads because we don't have anything really 'NEW' to say about L42. Let's face it, the band is gone. But I believe that people do this mostly because we share a common interest in L42 and might like to know the taste of other people as well. At least I'm interested to know. What has Scritti Politti got to do with L42 -- probably nothing, but it is interesting to find out that several people who love L42 also like SC. Interesting? Well, maybe not for many, but it does help to give us a little more relational glue at times. We can discuss the SOLO careers of Mark, Mike, Phil, Boon, Wally, etc., etc., and we DO do that. No problem. At the same time, this digest is also made up of tastes, new information, likes, dislikes, etc., that are very real and personal. These really shouldn't be dismissed or banished simply because they are an essential part of the digest and what makes it so unique. In other words, it's not going to change despite what you like or don't like. There's not a miraculous filter for it, nor will it go away. There's plenty of stuff that I don't really care to read about, so I scroll down. Simple. If I have something to add, then I say it -- like now. Messages sent out to the digest about what not to talk about affect a populous -- similar to telling then to "shut up. I don't care what you have to say if it isn't Level 42 related." Certainly this can be offensive, and it offends a lot of people. Imagine sitting down with 10-20 people and limiting the discussion to only Level 42 related material. Nothing else. I'm sorry, but that would be a little too boring for me, and would probably last a very short time before someone added something else outside L42. (Fanatics - insert flame here.) I think that many people would like to know what brought them to listen to Level 42, and the alternative music that they listen to now. I believe that it is VERY interesting to know these types of things -- Now, the conversation has bulk and interest. Sorry, but it's not going to change. Maybe it is a little frustrating at time, but look at it from all perspectives. This, is what makes this digest REAL. ~Sean -- *********** "The MIDI Extreme" *********** * http://www.flash.net/~questps/midi.htm * *** For the best MIDI files on the net!*** ****************************************** ------------------------------ Subject: MK on FOX (SW) (USA) From: Michael Thomas Payne Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 11:17:55 -0600 Well, I was watching the sports recap on FOX (SW) about 7:30PM last night, and during a segway into a commercial break, the track ONE MAN was played....talk about a surprise, I wonder if Mark gets any =A3=A3=A3=A3=A3 for that partial play? Gaynor" Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 19:30:13 -0500 (EST) After reading Asha's comment on the digest, I too thought I was the only Level 42 fan on the face of the Earth. Then thank goodness along came the internet, and I was able to hook up on this Digest and read the sometimes interesting things others have to say. If I don't like what's being said, or I've had enough of it, I simply scroll down further on the screen - Mark's got his thumb, well I've got my index finger! Anyway, the only reason I'm writing this is because reading YOUR top 10 choices has expanded my musical influences and choices as well. Now when I go into a music shop I browse through the used CD's looking for the names of artists YOU have all chosen. I figure if we all share this common love for Level 42, there must be something in this music that appeals to all of us in a little way. Anyway, thank you Asha, for your nickel's worth - it gave me something to think about, and I hope it does for maybe just a couple others out there too. Maybe 42 of us. Jen ------------------------------ Subject: Remixed recording From: Rob van Aperen Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 08:04:00 +0100 Hi! A couple of days ago I sent a message to the digest that I recorded, with the cheapest equipment, a version of Sandstorm. There was very much noise and the bass was way to loud. I did the mixing job again, now it sounds a little better. Take a look at http://145.48.232.16 and click on the "sandstorm"-hyperlink. It is a demo of only 1,5 minutes. I hope someone will enjoy it, or at least see the enthusiasm I made it with. Best regards, Rob ------------------------------ Subject: Favorite Albums...
