There have been messages sent saying how good the Guaranteed and SATS albums were, with references to Overtime and Over there. There have also been messages placed saying how the old stuff is better. I agree. I came on board with SATS, but I definately agree that the previous albums are much better. Sadly, Guaranteed was absolute shite. Her big day and Set me up were (for me) the only songs that resembled Level 42 and were of any quality. Their best has to be the Standing in the light album. They mixed commercial awareness and their own artistic beliefs. The sun goes down was the hit and tracks like I want eyes and People were written with their hearts. I don't know if any other digesters agree, but I think L42 should have stayed in the US after SITL and collaborate again with Larry Dunn and Verdine White. I never for the life of me understand why they did'nt ever return. The US after all is the home of funk. I'm sure they could have fused the Brit funk and the US styles with no problems at all. Mind you, they could'nt get on between them, so could they have got on long enough with outsiders!! I know that Mark and the guys were ambitious and wanted to carve out a career by themselves but having legends like Larry Dunn and Verdine White helping (and not forgetting Wally Baderou as well) would have been an unbeatable force. It's always easier with hindsight EH? By the way, still no release date of the Starchild remixes by Boris Dlugosch and Mousse T. If there are any Level 42 and garage enthusiasts out there, please keep um peeled. Send a message on the digest if you find out when the release date is. Apparantely the remix has received good reviews and has appeared on Bobby and Steve's play list (see www.zooenterprises.com)If you're not a garage enthusiast still check out the site. Bobby and Steve are funk/soul enthusiats. BYE FOR NOW Mario. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ------------------------------ Subject: The Pier Programme From: "Jennie Irvine" Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2001 13:43:22 -0000 Hi, Just to say that 'The Pier' programme does actually exist - I was in Joe Daflos when Mark was filmed in there for the programme. I just happened to walk in there one day for a drink with my friend, it was a bit of a shock to see Mark sat at the bar!!!! LOL Happy New Year to everyone!!! I've been away for a few months (roughly since Trash Live came out - I was there on the Friday night), but I'm back for updates on, chiefly, Mark and Phil, but also anything else L42 of interest. Also does anyone know about the progress of l42.com and is anyone going to put "Nothing More To Say" onto CD after cleaning it up ----the sound quality that is !!! Given the emergence of the "Theme To Margaret" mp3 (By the way this is great---keep these gems coming) maybe with a few more additions this could be another digest CD ? Someone asked where Mark got his scar from. Was this not by getting attacked by his Dad's dog when he was a kid ? (No prizes for guessing where I read this hey ?) His Dad was a prison warden and had a big , big dog. Also, what's this slagging off Trash...? Trash was used in an ironic sense...The album kicks ass !!! Finally, I have updated one or two bits of my web site...now minus Father Christmas and the funky bass solo. Till the DVD comes out..... From: William Burnett Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2001 22:23:08 +0000 Greetings. >Subject: Beating the drum of a different tune... >From: "LaBossiere, David" >I >wondered, especially since I'm not a drummer, which L42 song would be >categorized >as the hardest song to play on drums. You know, for years I thought I was the only person who really rated Phil's playing - None of the drummers I knew had much time for him, and given that Gary Husband seems much more the drummers drummer (in magazines etc.) I began to wonder if it was just me being biased. I was so pleased when I discovered that Jamie (the drummer in my band Sphere) is a huge fan. Although he admires the technicality of Gary's playing, he is far more into Phil's groove - and considering that we play fairly complex prog rock/fusion, I'm really impressed with that fact. Jamie's view on the subject is that Phil is one of the worlds most accurate, metronomic drummers. and in particular, he is astonished at how easily he seems to articulate streams of fast 16th's on the hi-hat with only his left hand, and seemingly no effort or fatigue during long gigs. Can't think of a specific song though. Now, a couple of questions. There seem to be a few George Duke fans here. I have & love his A Brazilian Love Affair album. Has he done any other albums in this vein or was it a one off? Also - someone (I've lost track of who) mentioned the Y-Chromo Boys and had tuttut in their email address. Just out of interest, is there any link between these guys and a funk rock band called Tut Tut that I saw live a few years ago? >Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2000 #314 >From: "Laurence F. From: "Zippel, Erdmann" Date: Mon, 8 Jan 2001 00:25:02 +0100 Thanks for all your answers to my blasphemic mail, it's good to see, that MK has fans like you, ( he will need them) Yes ,Tom, i feel like BRIAN now ( love your crucifixion scene !)but i have no kazoo, i'm just playing bass. O.K. Tom and James ,perhaps i was too hard with Mark, especially in comparing him and Level42, but if you would like to show a friend a good example of his music, would you choose this cd ( or the "one man" one ) ? And if you were a record company manager, would you give him a deal after listening to this demos ........? I don't think he has done something good for his reputation with this. ( Especially with a price 0f 15 pounds - what do you guys in the UK pay for a cd normally ? ) It is not the sound i'm talking about, it's this pseudo pop-rock stuff.....where is the funk ? Perhaps this is the stile Mark is prefering now, it's not mine, thats my problem, not Mark's It's hard to say goodbye, when you are a fan since the age of 15 ( fan club member Nr.671 )at 1982. And it's hard to face the fact, that the "good old days" will not come back. Peart reckoned that Phil's technique was breathtaking, and that he [Peart] would break a wrist trying to emulate it. Of course, this is going back a bit and I might have it all wrong, and anyway I'm a bass-player not a drummer and I really shouldn't be commenting on things I know little about... :-) ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2001 #6 From: "Laurence F. GREEN(SED)" Date: Mon, 08 Jan 2001 10:48:17 +0000 Hi all, Just picked up an amazing find. For many years it has been thought that there are only 4 Level 42 box sets. The 9 album box set, the 4 album box set, the three video box set and the Guaranteed promo box set. Well now I am the proud owner of (and thanks to Dean for the tip) a fifth Level 42 box set, the 'Running In The Family CD Video box set commemorating the 100th anniversary of the record player. This official German item comes in a 12" x 12" commemorative box (about 2" deep) and contain a large foldout 12"x12" sleeve titled in gold 'Level 42 - Running In The Family' with a molded space which contains the Running In The Family CDV. There is also a 150 odd page booklet about the history of the record player, all in German. You can see it here http://homepages.shu.ac.uk/~conslfg/ritfbox.htm Also, I have made a small page about lonbox CDs, if anyone has any of these that I don't have then please get in touch with me: http://homepages.shu.ac.uk/~conslfg/longbox.htm Best L()Z ------------------------------------------------------ Laurence Green Research Assistant Sheffield Hallam University School Of Environment and Development City Campus Advanced Construction Research, Room 302 Sheffield S1 1WB TEL: 0114 2253368
