Bids start at 15 GBP > >and include p&p. Auction ends forthcoming Friday (high noon)! It's worth between 8 and 10 pounds, and isn't too rare. >Well, since Robbie Williams has won 3 Brit Awards for such a great album, I >was wondering if Level 42 ever won any Brit Awards? They had a nomination for best album (and best group I think). The fact that he won best single for 'rock DJ' was, in my opinon, one of the funniest things I have ever heard. Almost as funny, he said he thought he deserved it. If he seriously thinks the entire British recording indusrty did not come up with a better single than that last year, then it's not only his five stomachs that have disappeared, but half his brain as well. Your sound card should have both a mic input and line in. You need plug the mini jack into line in, and the phono/rca connectors into outputs on your amp (not your tunrtable, as your TT will be unamplified). Next, in windows, double click the yellow speaker icon in the system tray, and then go to the menu bar OPTIONS, PROPERTIES and this will pop up a new screen. In this screen, select the Adjust Volume for RECORDING. Make sure the control for line in has a tick. do OK. The Volume control will now become a Recording Control. Make sure the Line in is selected, and set the level accordingly, and try playing a record on your TT and hopefully the monitor bar will go up and down! This means you have a live signal coming in, and you may also hear it thru your speakers on your PC. You then need a package to capture the sound, such as Sound Recorder at the most basic level, or something like SoundForge XP which will give you greater control. Start the software, click record, and start the source (LP) and click stop when done. That's all there is to it, but make sure you have a shed load of disk space, and average album will take up about 700mb of space. You can then use CD-Writing software to create an Audio cd. Good Luck! Digest CD --------- Good idea, I am more than willing to help here! Could it be anything to do with the fact I have chosen number 42 since I joined over two years ago and that number 42 was the Bonus Ball last week, or is there A MORE SINISTER EXPLAINATION? Steve Randall PS One would assume Andrew Godwin has never been in a band, if he thinks The Blues Brothers has no comedic content whatsoever. The Bob's Country Bunker with chicken wire and running off from the gig when the real band turn up is absolutely priceless. The critics also slated BB2000 but I found that unexpected funny as well. I've even held Blues Brothers parties and depped on bass in a BB band where slapping is not a prerequisite! And got =A380 both times! And free drink at one them! ------------------------------ Subject: Bruford, XTC From: Joey Vela Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 08:48:28 -0600 > PS This message entitled The Blues Brothers because, like that film, it has > no comedic content whatsoever. Awh! C'mon Andrew! You know you laughed at the bit where Elwood charges Twiggy $94 for a $10 tank of gas, and he wasn't even the gas station attendant. Or how about when Jake runs the Illinois Nazis off the bridge. I guess it must be an American thing because I thought it was hilarious. > This one is for those who loves instrumentals.Today I've found the > C.D.version of"One of a kind"album by Bill Bruford.Featuring > A.Holdsworth,Jeff Berlin,Dave Stewart and Bill Bruford. It really is a > masterpiece. If you find it,buy it and enjoy it.The album was released in > 1979 by Polydor.I'm sure that if you like the L42 instrumentals you will > like this album to. Uh, yeah. One of a Kind is a really good album, but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece. A masterpiece is something more along the lines of Miles Davis' Kind of Blue. Heck, One of a Kind isn't even Bruford's best album. That would be Gradually Going Tornado. One of a Kind does include one of my favorite Allan Holdsworth-penned instrumentals, "The Abingdon Chasp", which features some nice bass guitar from Jeff Berlin. For those who aren't familiar with Jeff Berlin, check out "Five G", which sounds kinda like a revved-up version of Be Bop Deluxe's "Dance of the Uncle Sam Humanoids", but with a more wicked bassline. When this album came out in 1979, Berlin was "the best". > Any XTC fans members of the digest? Yeah, that would be me. Ooh!! Here's yet another Level 42 connection. XTC's great album Skylarking was produced by Todd Rundgren, who as everyone knows is one of Mark King's favorite songwriters. LOL! ------------------------------ Subject: Scritti and stuff! From: "Nick Smith" Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 14:55:44 Allo Fiends, er Friends! Scritti Politti - TOP MUSIC!!! In fact, there is a L42/Scritti link in that Mark was a big fan - watch `Fait Accompli' and the tune `Best Thing Ever' from `Provision' is playing through the huge PA system at one of the Dutch gigs (not sure which venue but it looks like an indoor sports stadium, complete with cycle track!) Their latest album `Anomie and Bonomie' is my favourite `recent' album - lovely songs and well produced! Tavs (hi Lee!) - Nik Kershaw's '80's' bassist was a chap called Dennis Smith who used a lovely cherry red Jaydee and a Wal bass - in fact, he could be clearly seen playing the JD at Live Aid, back in July '85! As for the Fender MK Jazz - I had number 38 and it was a heap of doggie doos (Don Z - I eat my hat!) - I have now played number 42 (which is the best one I've seen), number 2, number 35 and number 15 and they all exhibit similar flaws (ie frets not seated correctly). They look great but for £1999 you are best advised to buy something else! Anyone else own one? Saw John Diggins (yes, JD!) earlier today and he is in the course of refurbishing the first ever Supernatural bass - this looks fantastic! His website is also under construction: www.jaydeeguitars.com. Don't forget our JD club at Yahoo as well and my own site: www.ebasses.co.uk !!! Cheers! He has a wicked music taste, and if it wasn't for him, I would not be on this digest today, but saying that, ive got a pretty good idea of good music when I hear it, so here is a list of bands that I recommend to any l42 digester. Earth wind and fire Jamiroquai Brothers Johnson Scitti Polliti Steely dan Tower of Power Cameo Go West Simply Red (a new flame, its only love- great stuff) Monkey Business (a fu*/ing good czech Rep band) Average White band Here are some wicked solo artists: Daryl Hall (eh?) Ramsey Lewis (get Sky Islands) James Brown (ha FUNK FUNK) Candy Dulfer (anyone heard of Hans?, some people will know who I am talking about!) Phil Upchurch (whatever happened to the blues) (that is a CRACKING album, but quite Rhythm and Bluesy) Andrew Gold (eh?) Madness (a bit silly, but good bass playing) Nik Kershaw (pull me up im falling over- cool) ABC (SHOOT THAT POISON ARROW!) Larry Graham (find a track called "HAIR") again I could go on for hours remember I know all this and im 17 years old, im in a band trying to play Level 42, and im hopefully gonna meet all you guys in the Jazz cafe this year! And I cant emphasise more about the above bands and solo artists-go out and get some music, I ve got tons of all the above, and its FU*/*/G BRILLIANT. Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 15:50:28 -0000 Hi everyone, Question for the dedicated L42ers: I had (and lost) a tape with a live gig from around '86 which had RITF with completely different lyrics. What was all that about then? I've still got that, and I guess it was before they released it as a single, and decided that the lyrics weren't that hot, so they all got changed. "I've got a scientific mind An enquiring kind I always make the right connections" (Obviously sung to the tune of the verse of RITF) Dodgy lyrics is a phrase that springs to mind. So that probably explains why they were changed. Anybody else got any bright ideas on the subject? Cheers, Jimbo P.S. Got my CD Roms and audio - cheers Mark! ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Sound help Required From: Don Z Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 07:51:39 -0800 (PST) > Can anyone help me fix the following problem. You should use the "tape out" connectors to go to the "line in" or "mic in" of your PC. Don't forget that you may then need to adjust the input level in the volume control panel (click the little speaker on your taskbar). Or has > the man in Tandy given me the wrong cable. (The box says on the cable > for playing portable audio sources through an audio system. Can you > get recording ones separate ?) Before you start looking at the hardware problem, did you check to ensure that recording is enabled? 1) Bring up the volume control (under start->programs->accessories or 2x click on the little speaker icon in the tray) 2) From the panel, bring up the recording properties (options->properties; adjust volume for *recording) 3) Make sure than Line In is checked the the list of controls below 4) Hit Okay 5) Make sure that Mute is not selected, and the slider is up (not all the way though, or you'll get distortion) Now try your recording again. If you're trying to record from an LP, you'll need some sort of a pre-amp (unless you run the cable to the 'record-out' on the back of your amp). The genius at Radio Shack might be able to help you find one. Again, you only need a pre-amp if you go straight from your turntable to your computer. ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2001 #58 From: "Alex Humphries" Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 18:41:01 -0000 Hi levelheads, Did any onbe watch top of the pops 2 last night? I managed to get hold of "Goldwave" to record .WAVs. However my stereo with the record player does not have an output socket that I can use with my PC. So I put the track onto tape and connected the surround sound / output connectors to the line input on the pc, which finally worked !!!! However, the quality is very poor. Do I need to buy a new soundcard as the one on my PC is quite basic and is part of the motherboard ? Also, when I try to use the recording tool in Adaptec Easy CD Creator, nothing happens...it does not record anything any ideas ??? I have now checked settings on speaker volume as suggested.
