From: "goldie100" Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 12:15:44 -0000 Hi all, I will totally agree that even L42 @ their worst is better than the crap around today - as I said many moons ago! perhaps my use of the word 'crap' was out of context with regards to 'Guaranteed' - I will now just say it is not one of my faves. I certainly would not consider myself any less of a fan for not liking certain recordings less than others. I first got into L42 in 1983, during the height of 'Living it up' (which, incidently, I don't consider to be one of their strongest - though it is fab live). It was then that a mate was playing an old one called 'Weave your spell' and then 'Love Games' - and I was hooked. My most listened to long player would have to be World Machine. As for the one I don't often play but is fabulous when I do, that would have to be POA, with L42 a close second, but then I also love True Colours. Oh dear, now I can't decide - there are so many fantastic tracks spread over all the LPs, it's a bloody difficult choice. I just don't have 'Guaranteed' in there!!!! but then, I'm not really a L42 fan, am I?. Cheers, Lozzie xxxxx ps: I think the most underrated track, IMHO, would have to be 'Kansas City Milkman'. ------------------------------ Subject: expohall gig From: "s.hillenius" Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 13:36:39 +0100 Hi I just wanted to say that I've spotted a lot of TRASH on the Digest lately and I am not talking about our main mans demo album... Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 00:52:44 +0100 Hi Levelheads! There is a lot of comments against and in favour of "Guaranteed" these days. I want to say that I donīt hate this album but I donīt love it either. That may be because I am more a Jazzfunkster than a Poprocker myself. As I said on another occasion, "Guaranteed" is a dark album, very far from what we were used to listen to. Only the tracks "Guaranteed", "Overtime" and "If you were mine" sound like Level 42. This change of style that started three years before with SATS contributed to the decline of the band because there were more fans that liked the early funky vibe of them than the new pop approach that they took, thatīs the fact! But donīt worry, as I always say even the worst of their songs is better than anything we listen to nowadays. Well, changing subject, the L42 album that I donīt get tired to listen to is World Machine and the one that was a great discovery for me was The Pursuit of Accidents (here I agree with my fellow countrywoman Cristina Gallego). Thatīs all. Bye for now! SOLE. The percussionist on Standing In The Light album, Paulinho Da Costa is currently doing the rounds as part of Eric Clapton's Band, So if any of you 42 fans want to see a suberb musician & contributor to a 42 album, go and check him out, also in the band are Bassist Nathan East, And drummer Steve Gadd, for more info link to... http://www.xs4all.nl/~slowhand/ Paulinho would be my choice for the percussion gig at any 42 reunion, and as he is still gigging, Not Semi retired, (God I hate that term!!) it is all a posability, His percussion work in particular on the 12" of Microkid, and Dance on Heavy weather, are great, also check out any Earth wind & fire album, oh and My Fave 42 album... Persuit of accidents (title track is a killer, Marcus Millers Fave 42 track too.) Most enduring album, not having listened to it for a while. Forever now (resurgenge), Believe it or not i did not have the resurgence album until recently, I bought the original RCA issue, and liked Romance, & Sunbed, cos they were the only ones that resembled the original 42 sound for me, i did not bother with resurgence, because i thought it was a cash in, putting the songs on that were not good enough for the original release i thought, Bollocks to that, ........How wrong i was But Every Single Track that was left off this album, & subsequently placed on Resurgence is superb, Whoever ordered their ommission from the RCA issue needs to be suspended by the testicles with chicken wire, Criminal!!!!!(you can understand why Phil was so pissed off again, when you produce the master tapes to the record company, and some Twat puts a red line thru your best work, How then are you expected to go and do promotion and remain posative about the album, when you know in your heart the finest songs are deemed "not commercial enough" and scrapped, you are in effect lying to your fans However, this filled me with hope, because i now realised that the flame had not gone out on 42, it was just being stifled by Ignorant Incompetant record exes, Left to their own devices, (and now is the time to do it BOYS!!!!), 42 still can make superb albums, if you took away any commercial pressure from them, and said, just get on and play what you want, I believe you would have a real diamond of an album. as Mark says The Best Is Yet To Come, well it will be Mark, any future Project, either Live or on CD, When you are the Best Bassist, Phil is the Best Drummer, Wally & Mike are the Best keyboard meisters, Boon is the Best guitarist, Barnacle the best saxdude, and to go full circle here in this post, Paulinho da costa is the best percussionist, doing your own thing and not trying in vain to please Idiotic dimwits at record companies who don't Get it whatsoever, then you will all succseed, and have something you can all be very proud of The Best Is Surely To Come...So Get Busy then..chop chop!!!! just put singles out of your mind, and be natural Des _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ------------------------------ Subject: jamiroquai From: heather ettinger Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 17:56:36 -0800 (PST) Hi, I was pretty amazed when I read the level 42 digest today to find mentions of Jamiroquai. GREEN(SED)" Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 09:07:20 +0000 OK, I am wondering, which was the first Level 42 song recorded for release? Love Meeting Love was released in July 1980 and therefore we would expect that track was recorded in or before July, and that was released on Elite DAZZ 5. The Early Tapes material is called 'Early Tapes July/August 1980'. But records state that Sandstorm was released in March 1980and hence must have been recorded on or before that date. Now I haven't consulted the definitive biography yet, and I'm not sure that will help, but Sandstorm was released on Elite DAZZ 4, which SURELY was released before (or at the very latest simultaneously with) DAZZ 5. I call to the attention of 'Word Machine' readers, the interview with Boon Gould in issue 2. I ask him about DAZZ 4, and he states that he doesn't know what I mean, because Love Meeting Love was recorded first, then everything else later. Somewhere, something doesn't add up and I don;t see how they managed to get a track onto vinyl and into the shops some 4 months before they recorded it????? SO what could the answer be? I think the March 1980 date for the release of DAZZ 4 is possibly wrong, but I'm going to check on this tonight, in the meantime, I'd love to know peoples opinons.
