Mark says that the first gig L42 ever did was in Aachen, Germany. He also says he is not interested in producing more commercial albums for a record company. Sorry about the confusion. Christian ------------------------------ Subject: - Shakatak From: "bunty omar" Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 08:11:38 -0500 There are certain things that should be left in the 80's and one of them is Shakatak for sure. I mean, who in their right mind would travel out to see Shakatak, how many classic jazz-funk tracks have they to their credit? When our brave lads took to the stage, they were cutting edge playing with the Police and the Stranglers, (and getting pelted with firecrackers in the proccess), an antidote to the dying punk scene no less. Shakatak are hardly worthy of playing against L42 and are no longer marketable. If you were to pull in some proper heavyweights like JTQ, Courduroy, Incognito, Omar, Al Green, Lewis Taylor, K-Creative, Carleen Anderson, Johnny Hates Jazz (joke) then you'd have a right meaty line up on your hands. But ..... Shakatak, aaaagggghhhh, you are so wrong man! .... and as for those those weedy female vocals!!!! I need to have a lie down now, maybe blow the dust off the 'Drivin Hard' album and remind myself how middle of the road Shakatak were even then, then maybe play SITL just to piss on Shakatak and then twiddle the knob of my pink prophet. I will order the new MK CD's today and have some thoughts on DVD vs CDRom. The CDrom format works worldwide, while the DVD format would need to be converted into PAL & NTSC format, which would cost quite a bit. Why they STILL have two formats now for DVD is beyond me and actually pisses me off. But, at least I don't have to feel left out without an opportunity to see the footage.... paul F __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The CD's are the dogs b***ocks (or similar words to that affect). 4. The inlay on the audio CD reads "...and the best is yet to come" - This must be a reference to Trash 2 being on it's way. 5. I don't know why Mark didn't release the CD on DVD or video - it looks better than OK to me. 6. How do I convert the CD-ROM to a VCD (or something else) so that I can watch it on my TV? 7. It's > a splendid example of a band getting on with it after > the departure (both literally and figuratively) of > some beloved members, and exploring new territory > rather than regurgitating an increasingly dated sound. > > I was thinking the other day about movies which opened > as box-office failures, only to become cherished > classics many years later: Casablanca, It's a > Wonderful Life, The Wizard of Oz,.... And so, I > believe, shall it be for GUARANTEED in the world of > Level 42 lore. > I feel the love growing already! - Don Z Excellent post! I second everything Don says regarding Guaranteed. It seems that every time this album gets mentioned, it subsequently brings out more applause. The number of Guaranteed fans continues to grow while the ranks of those who hate it are dwindling. > PS - I also think The Doobie Bros. were better AFTER > Michael McDonald joined! Yeah, and the Moody Blues were better after Denny Lane left and Justin Heyward joined and TOTALLY changed their sound. Just another note regarding the "reunion hopes". So I may have been wrong about only Digesters being the ones who would buy tickets to a Level 42 reunion. I see it now. Each Digester brings his/her clan and they tell 2 friends who tell 2 friends who tell 2 friends and so on and so on and so on... Level 42 may even sell enough tickets to sell-out Wembley Stadium. However, to whoever mentioned Jamiroquai sharing the bill, which BTW was a brilliant idea, Jay and the boys would headline, not Level 42. Jamiroquai would be the bigger draw based on CURRENT album sales, ticket sales, airplay, etc. The banner would read something like "Britfunk Fest Featuring Jamiroquai with special very guests: Level 42, Shakatak, et al. Alright. So we have surmised that ticket sales shouldn't be a problem, but first thing's first. HOW DO WE GET MARK, MIKE, PHIL, BOON, AND WALLY TOGETHER IN THE SAME ROOM LONG ENOUGH TO TALK TO ONE ANOTHER LET ALONE DISCUSS A POSSIBLE REUNION????? Letter writing campaign perhaps? I vote for Des Lynch to write an impassioned plea, similar to his reunion ravings here on the Digest, to each one of them. However, I wouldn't emphasize money or ticket sales. I would instead focus on reliving the magic as well as the chance to let newer Level 42 fans experience it. It's true that Kiss regrouped with its original members and makeup after 16 years, but that was due in part to money. They found themselves no longer playing stadiums. So I don't think their reasons for regrouping with Ace and Peter were really all that noble. Bauhaus reformed briefly in 1999 after 15 years apart, but they didn't exactly play to packed houses, at least here in the States. I also read recently that Roxy Music was regrouping (sans Brian Eno and Paul Thompson) after a 17 year absence, and they will tour the States! So, let's see. It seems that the average group breakup lasts anywhere from 15 to 17 years. Based on those numbers, I don't think we'll see any Level 42 reunion until at least 2009. But a summers weekend on the island would be just perfect, and rather than just trotting home after a london gig, we could have an aftershow digesters party on the beach, ..that would be a riot wouldn't it? a combined original 42 Gig and an ILF rolled into one..mmmmmmm I dunno about hughsies post yesterday about having it In upton Park!!!!!that place has not been sold out for over a century...LOL!!(sorry mate) and i don't think by dredging up all the past media tags about 42 fans driving cortina's and Capri's with fury dice should be kept, (even though i used to drive a capri!) we don't drive them anymore. Just the original 42 of phil, mark, boon, mark, wally, mike, barnacle, and a good percussionist will do, on a stage, with a superb sound system, I don't care what lights they have as long as the band are visable, and forget the flashy stage outfits, 42 played better when they wern't posing, bring back the old T shirts, muscle vests, & boots oh and loz, you say you don't mind if wally is not part of the equasion, well, on an instrumental night, how about Chief Inspector being played by 42 & wally, I would be dancing on my seat to that one, just the icing on the cake eh? I have to say that the Guaranteed album has always been since its release, one of my most favourite albums. My thoughts on this album were strong, as they were finally able to play the music they wanted to play without the pressure from the marketing dept at Polydor. Although Polydor refused the album, RCA was right to accept the album without changes. I have heard stories however that Gary did most of the keyboard parts on this album and that Mike Lindup was not pleased with some of the songs...and that Gary did not (and still doesn't) have a very high regard for Mike Lindup. I got the album weeks before its release while I was serving in Saudi Arabia, the lady at RCA-BMG was nice enough to send me an advance copy on a promo cassette along with a million other promo cassettes. Right when I heard Guaranteed, I thought it was an awesome song, then it was followed by Overtime, and so on.... All the songs (except THE APE) had a dynamic sound and was sonically different from anything I felt they had done before. It lifted my spirits while driving through the streets of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia at 3:00AM, so it holds a special place in time and place for me. I actually heard A Kinder Eye on a NW flight going to the UK in October (or it could have been March) 1994, it couldn't believe it. I don't understand the critiques it gets from time to time, except for the track THE APE (which is probably the worst song L42 ever did..and should have been the soundtrack to the old Atari video game Donkey Kong). The album had a nice feel to it, it started high and festive, then sank into things lost, then ended with an awesome melody of With A Little Love. If you haven't listened to it for a few years, go back and play it again, you might find that it truly is one of the best albums they did! Mikey PS: Back in 1996 I did a "Weird Al" parody of the lyrics of Guaranteed, called Stampede, some of you might enjoy it, you will have to look in the digest archives for 1996, using search word Stampede! ------------------------------ Subject: EARN A SERIOUS INCOME AT HOME!
