Yes, you can convert the CDrom discs into video using a Video Card in your PC, and I guess many people will as who wants to sit down in front of the PC to watch a 2 hour video? Not a grumble though, I think it's great, this is the first Level 42 CDRom released, a boon for collectors. Yes I went to the shows, enjoyed the music, enjoyed the buzz etc etc, and yes I would buy a ticket to a reunion gig, but that is beside the point. Everyone seems to think that a reunion is the holy grail, and even if the guys do have the time, why do it? The fans get a real buzz out of seeing them play live, but who are we to pre-suppose that Mike, Mark, Phil and Boon also feel this way? For all we know, they might be sick of playing the same old rubbish (their perspective not mine) again and again. Remember, they have all been round the treadmill a few times, and are pretty fed up with it all, and whom can blame them. The point I was eluding to, is that the band members have moved on, they may NOT WANT TO do a reunion, and fanciful talk of hoping that one might happen is just that, fanciful. As fans you have to accept this and be happy for the band members, and move on with them. We all continue to support the members, mainly MK and ML, with their solo projects, and this is great, we get to hear new and old stuff, but it will never be Level 42, and more importantly, it will never be Level 42 of old. I do not care what anyone says, the sound of the band in the early days is different from the later work. In my opinion the early stuff is better, there is a raw energy that seems to have got lost later on, a raw energy that eminated from the band because they had started on a great adventure musically and personally. Later this energy was lost, and I feel that this is the main reason for Phil going, and Boon later. No one is saying that a reunion would mean the band would be crap, this would not be the case, just look at the calibre of the musicians involved, but it would not be the same. As the old expression says's - "Hope springs eternal" - just don't pin too many hopes on this. You have to be realistic. Whilst the realism is kicking in, spin up a copy of Standing In The Light and confirm your belief in what Level 42 WERE. How come some of the people on the digest have this amazing | delusion that there are | no other Level 42 fans on earth except digesters. I can tell you categorically | that the biggest | Level 42 fans in the world are NOT digesters. Ouch! Of course you are right, clearly the majority of fans will not necessarily be online. But the argument in the previous posting seemed to be, that we could fill the Odeon just by getting digesters off their arses, and this was what I was doubting... :-) so we are in agreement here. However - Nigel, your good sense and brains win maximum respect from me yet again. I really doubted the sense of the L42 reunion but in the format you suggest - i.e. as more of a Britfunk revival - it truly is a good idea, and I would think, be very marketable. I have had some correspondence off the list with Des about the viability of a top-flight video/documentary/network interest if there ever was a reunion (and being cynical about it!) However, in this format the idea really has legs and is something I might be able to get my energies behind - what's more I might (might) know one or two people from the TV side who could advise on how to get it moving. What do you think Des? The big question behind all this is, of course, would the guys do it - IF there was a TV deal and a whole other package behind this? Maybe interest from a broadcaster might be the persuasion they need to do it. What are your thoughts? I have no access to Mark and the others, being just a humble fan, and I don't know if anyone has the contacts to find out. Pointless us dreaming away without some kind of interest from them. By the way, don't raise any hopes on the basis of this posting. My field is mainly documentary (anyone in the Meridian ITV area of the UK might have seen a series which has just gone out, called Fame School, which I directed). It is notoriously fearsomely difficult to get anything commissioned nowadays and for every brilliant idea that gets commissioned, ninety-nine other equally brilliant ideas fall at the wayside. But as an 'event' this is marketable. The broadcasters are into 'theme nights' and as the eighties are so popular at the moment, the time is right to do something about it. Neil ------------------------------ Subject: Double-pull From: "Nigel Collier" Date: Thu, 8 Feb 2001 11:59:29 -0000 I have what I think is photographic evidence of Marking using the double-pull technique I mentioned a few Digests back. If you look at this photo of Mark on my homepage (I think I lifted this picture from Chris Dickman originally): http://www.staff.ncl.ac.uk/nigel.collier/likes.html#MUSIC ...you can actually see the position of his index and middle fingers of his right hand - the index finger has just pulled the G (on fret 7)...and I reckon the middle finger is just about to follow it with a pull from frets 7 to 9...take a look. Can't we do something about it? Please stick to Level 42 and related subjects. Had to get it of my chest, it was p...ing me off, a bit. So and now some Level content. Nice to see that despite all the rumors about the DVD and VHS, the live-show has been released on CD-rom and an audio CD. The order is on it's way. So one request: Keep up the rumours about the reunion, it might be possible that the guys will get back together for one more album and a live show. It's possible, there was a band here in the Netherlands that got back together after 15 years for one more album, around 15 sold out live shows and on top of it, a live album. Never say never. It's great to know that there are other people around who are interested in real living and hard-working musicians (as opposed to "semi retired old gits") :) Joe Jackson is currently on tour with his "Night and Day II" show. I saw perform last week in Stuttgart, great show, place was sold out, ticket number 42, fantastic! Check out his new album Night and Day II! I've also got tickets for his London gig next week (also sold out). That's on my 42nd birthday, would you believe it? (I know you all couldn't care less, but posting here requires at least one mention of "42" if I remember rightly). Joe Jackson is my MAIN MAN at the moment, just like Mark King once was. Keep moving on people! Mark King should too! Luv Hans PS: Before firing up the flames, the "semi retired old git" bit was a quote from a recent posting, which I found highly amusing btw! I saw Gill Scot Heron recently, the band looked like a corpses, but the pure, charisma, energy and talent pissed on anything around at the moment. Miles Davis was no spring chicken when he carped it - listen to his last album - Doo Bop, funky as hell. Fortunately Jazz & Funk is reliant on true talent and personality as apposed to the fickle here today/gone tommorow pop industry which L42 finally succumbed to. They should find their roots, because in their day they were untouchable - listen to the Paris show on the Forever Now web-site, seat of the pants stuff that even eludes JK's back-line these days. Can you imagine that kind of shit with todays technolgy (and a bit of horn), even Mike's gone back to twiddling the knobs of the Prophet live with DaLata - brilliant stuff, why can't the others see it? --------------------------------------------------------------- Using a Macintosh? Amazing coincidence that in the UK yesterday they were running stories in the paper about internet forums and newsgroups being the new dead letter boxes for international gangster and/or spy rings. I dunno, CIA, MI5, DI6, L42, easy for drunken IRA or KGB person to get confused. If anyone deciphers all the crap from Wednesday's Dig and it's of interest to the net conspiracy community, please let me know. I live in Derby UK. No one here stocks DR strings. I could write a short diatribe about how good they are if anyone would be interested. ------------------------------ Subject: Reunion & Video From: Winston Walker Date: Thu, 8 Feb 2001 11:06:15 -0500 As far as the reunion stuff goes, personally i have no desire to have these guys get back together. I'm not saying that i wouldnt attend if they did, but i just dont sit around wishing it to happen. I'm quite happy with the cd's, and the recordings of the few times i did see them live. I was able to seen the band with the Gould brothers 4 times, but i do wish I had seen them during the POA eara, as this is my fave album. I have no doubt that a reformed band could sell out any venue, as they do have more fans than this digest, and there are quite a huge number of fans that have never seen them. The only way i'd like to see it happen is if the band decided on their own to do it, and not some festival promoter offering huge amounts of money. But i'm not holding my breath. :-) Rich, the cdrom video thing can be converted to a videotape or VCD playable on your dvd player, but it all depends on the format of the video on the cdrom. If you have a video card that allows you to display your pc on your tv, you could send the signal to your vcr. Or you could convert the video files to MPEG 1, and make a VCD, or MPEG 2 for an SVCD. There are quite a few ways of doing this, so if you are desperate to view this on your TV, it can be done. tcoy Win ------------------------------ Subject: Phil From: "" Date: Thu, 08 Feb 2001 16:24:39 Hello Friends Does anyone else think that Phil Gould and actor James Spader are one and the same person ??...........nope, me neither..! And don't say you can't cut them out, because if you believe that you really shouldn't have access to a PC. There, I've said it.... Loz Green, you're a funny bugger - I loved your response to my Dog Gag and your post generally. It's not often I LOL while reading the Digest, but I did that time! From Nigel Collier: "...and be more of a "British Jazz Funk past and present celebration, featuring Level 42" thereby opening up the band's back catalogue to today's funk fans who may not be aware of them as a heavyweight jazz funk group." Now THAT would be a gig. Trouble is, the tour would never bastard well make it Down Under. I'd love to know what Mark and the boys think of it. They did something similar here in Oz a couple of years ago - all these 80s rock bands like the Choirboys, the Angels, Skyhooks, Matt Finish, The Eurogliders, Hunters & Collectors, Hoodoo Gurus and Men At Work got together and toured the country. Never saw it myself - not into pub rock - but it attracted a lot of 30-somethings who fondly remember all that old cobblers. Has anyone else had trouble sending a request for the IoW package to order @ mark-king.com or is it just me? Mine bounced back. A question for Hotmail users: I'm in the middle of composing an email and I want to nip back to the Digest to cut & paste some text - but then I can't get back to my half-written email. What's the secret? Finally, my gag of the day: Bloke goes to the doctors and says "Doc, I can't stop singing 'The Green Green Grass Of Home." Doc says "That sounds like Tom Jones Syndrome." Bloke says "Is it common?" Doc says "It's not unusual..."
