From: ChrisMurgy @ aol.com Date: Sat, 3 Feb 2001 07:12:33 EST Following up on NIgel Collier's post regarding the Jazz Cafe version of Mr. Pink being top of list of versions of that song - I would contend that the version of 'To Be With You Again' on that CD is the greatest I've ever heard it played! The off beat drums at the closing instrumental give it such an edge and a right rolocking pace - good work Gary! Like wise - The Spirit is Free at the Crystal Palace Bowl remains unsurpassed, and has a totally different feel from the album version. I only actually got a copy of Changes some years after hearing that on the CPB tape, and thought the vocals finished one verse sooner than they did as the CPB recording I had on cassette wasn't exactly Hifi and they are a bit subdued! Jakko's guitar solo(s) on that track make me gasp - not just the technical brilliance but the way it captures the mood of the song so well and 'lifts it' - something a great solo should always do. Also checkout www.hottracks.com, as well as www.disconet.com Regarding the Rock Against Repatriation single, according to the cd single liner notes, Mark King did vocals, and Pino Palladino played bass. And "While Were Young" was done by Kerri Chandler, right? I'm getting confused with all these samples. :-) Also, way back in the mid to late 80's, there was a rap tune by "Jeckyl & Hyde", that used the STARCHILD bass line. I've since lost the 12" version, and have been trying to find it ever since. This was not an actual sample, but the music was performed by another band for this reording. I don't know that I really want to encourage that, for a couple of reasons. Although I've always wanted to see Phil & Mark play together, after Phil's recent efforts to sabotage sales of the re-mastered albums, I don't care if I ever see him. He's kind of just a punk after all, isn't he? Plus, if Level 42 did a reunion show, it would be in a large venue, and I cherish being able to see Mark in small clubs. I'm too old for huge crowds now. > I trust that he is making the right decision based > on what I saw the cameramen doing [there didn't > really seem to be any audience shots, for example]. Lolita's right on this, I'm sure. This is why most videotaped concerts are really edited together from two or more consecutive shows. What they didn't get the firts night, they get the second (Live at Wembley, for example). Mark should've known better, but at least he tried for us.
