From: "Spencer, Paul" Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 11:29:10 +0000 (GMT) I write this with disappointment clouding my weary head. (or is that the hangover, can't tell). I'm sick of the backbiting that goes on just for the sake of a difference in taste. What is really annoying me, is that although I posted a question to the digest about the live video/dvd, it gets lost in all the crossfire about metal this, metal that. So I'll ask again, this time in large font so that everyone can SEE IT! WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE VIDEO/DVD RELEASE THAT WAS PROMISED IN MID JANUARY? The official Mark King site is unavailable as is level42.com. So come on, someone must know something. Don't be shy, offer some happy news to brighten up my day..... please. ta Paul.. ---------------------------------------- Paul Spencer research student uwe, bristol ------------------------------ Subject: Emerson, Lake and Palmer From: "Randall, Steve" Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 11:32:58 -0000 I was listening to the ELP live at the Albert Hall CD (1998). In one of the tracks a light bulb inside my head clicked on and said "Level 42". There was a chord sequence/interlude which was similar to some L42 I couldn't place. I will listen again and try to work out what it is. I don't suppose any of you attended that concert. One of the highlights for me was one of the last bottom notes in "Lucky Man". My brother and I just turned to look at each other in amazement. It was is if I somebody had taken hold of our testicles and shook them. The vibration was so low and powerful. Unfortunately it didn't happen again! The other highlight was Keith Emerson laying the Hammond on it's back, stepping down into the front row and playing a classical piece upside down. I would struggle playing it the right way up. Maybe that thumb tape I mentioned a few days ago was Dutch not Swedish. Now that's just hitting below the belt. Only freaky bass I've seen is Gene Simmons axe bass. Hey, remember when Prince used to play that freaky guitar shaped like his former unpronounceable name? Ed, chill out bro. There are folks here whose tastes run a bit more eclectic than yours. Besides that, you could always scroll past the heavy metal talk if it really bothers you that much. Suffice it to say that the few Metallica or Iron Maiden fans on this digest are in a serious minority among the Level 42 hardcore fans just as they would be in a newsgroup covering Metallica and Iron Maiden and their hardcore fans. How many hardcore Metallica fans have heard of Level 42 let alone are fans? If you don't like the music of Metallica or Iron Maiden, Ed, then that's fine. Geddy is getting really good at writing lyrics, although I'm not sure if he's ready to take the mantle from Neil Peart just yet. Solo albums are so cool because they give the listener a glimpse into the tastes, creativity, and influences of that band member outside of the context of his/her band. Sometimes they sound similar to their band, such as Donald Fagen's Nightfly. But sometimes they are quite a departure, Like Sting's Dream of the Blue Turtles. > Level 42 connection: Geddy and Mark both sing and play bass rather well. Both are world-class bassists, but I would give the vocal edge to Mark. However, Geddy can sing, play bass, play synth, and play taurus pedals, all simultaneously, rather well. Edge Geddy! LOL! Actually one huge similarity is that both play Fender basses now when they almost exclusively played other models previously. > Not so fast. Maybe there is a Metallica digest someplace, but I doubt that their discussion is as lively is this, and I'm certain that they never talk about Level 42. Point is this. HIT THE FRIGGIN SCROLL BUTTON!! One more point about Metallica, with their music and anti-Napster views set aside. I can say with a pretty high degree of certainty that James, Lars, Jason, and Kirk never uttered the words "meet me at the bar" without actually meeting their fans at the bar. Since they are directed at me, I feel I have the right to have a final word. Sorry for the length... ================================ > From: Joey Vela > > Eric Pseja's response to Ed Bilson regarding Jason Newsted and Steve Harris > was right on the money. There is an elitist element here on this digest... > > However, there is such a thing as "myopic-hearing". I think we all suffer > from it at times... ===> At the risk of offending anyone, I do agree that ther is an elitist air to some of the commentary regarding this subject. I find this disturbing and saddening. Instead of people saying, "I think that music is terrible, but if you like it then good for you," it seems that more people choose the, "what are you crazy? That music is complete shit and you have to have the brain the size of a pea to think it's good!" attitude. It makes me shake my head in disbelief because I thought that Level 42 fans were indeed a classier breed of listeners. Oh well. Also, I love the term "myopic hearing" and think it is dead on for what I am trying to explain. Thanks for the erudite backup. ================================== > From: Ed Bilson > > You're making some assumptions buddy! > I've seen Iron Maiden a few times, not for 15 or 20 years, but I remember it all > quite well. The lights were good. ===> Might I ask why you've seen Maiden "a few times" if you only thought the lights were good? That just doesn't make sense. Did you go because you were trying to impress some girl who was into them, or was it because someone bought you a free ticket? I just don't understand. > On two separate occasions, I've had to play Metallica covers. They were easy-peeeezy. ===> Yes, many Metallica songs are easy to cover. But what does that have to do with anything? There are also many Level 42 songs that many people would find pretty easy to cover as well. > If you knew what you were talking about you might have mentioned Why you think they merit > discussion - instead of justifying yourself on the basis of their (supposed) reputation. > And you couldn't. Could you? ===> My remark about their reputation was strictly a reply to your previous comment that Maiden and Metallica are both "irrelevant" in terms of quality music. I was just saying that the album sales and concert tour revenue for both bands tell a different story. As far as the merit of their discussion here? I bet you'd be surprised to hear what musicians influence heavy metal acts. As a matter of fact, I read in a past interview that being a finger-style player too, Steve Harris is a fan of Mark King's bass playing. > If anyone else is interested in changes in personnel in heavy metal acts, why don't > you set up a similar e-mail digest to commiserate with one another on? You can talk > all about the freaky shapes their basses are, the colour of their leather jackets > and stuff. ===> Commiserate? Hardly. This all started with a simple music-news comment. It's funny how you say things that make my assumptions so correct. Discuss the shape of their basses? The color of their leather jackets? That's so condescending. You are a Level 42 elitist. Just the person that Joey Vela was talking about. That's all I have to say. I bet you're also the kind of person that gets upset when Mark doesn't have a beer at the bar with you after the gig, eh? ============================= > From: Don Z > > Oh, stop--it's just a joke! I'm very ecclectic, and I love rock'n'roll. But I never > saw the appeal of the "M" bands: Metallica, Maiden, Megadeth, etc. Guess I never > had that much angst, but to each his own, eh? ===> Thanks Don! THAT's the correct way to be! I don't expect everyone else to be a fan, but I do expect people to respect others' musical tastes. By all means, the "M" bands are not general appreciation music. Don Z = NOT a Level 42 elitist. :) > Speaking of other bands though, here's a new topic for discussion: "Heaven in My > Hands" always reminded me of the 80's rock band Saga. ===> Yes! I always thought that HIMH was Level 42's "fanfare" tune. It's very powerful and aggressive for Level 42... Definitely the "Layin it One The Line" or the "Separate Worlds" of Level 42... heh heh. ======================================== > From: Daniel Venema > > The True Colours album however does not look like a level 42 album. The CD is > printed with the label of a different CD, namely the soundtrack of a movie > called "Meschugge". Anyone else experienced this? ===> Yes! I have the version of this CD too. It's the TC music, but a different disc. Maybe a collector's find? I think the blank CDs may have got mixed up at the labeling plant. ========================================= > From: Tom Trudell > > Not so fast. There is something to appreciate in all kinds of music - even this > crap. Check out Mr. Sandman! ===> Heh heh.. good one! I often find myself a fan of certain metal songs rather then an entire album or group's catalog. However, as a musician, I find that there is definitely "good" metal and "bad" metal. =========================================== > From: "Desmond Lynch" > Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 02:35:23 -0000 > > Jesus, do you think we can talk about Metalica, just coz they have a Bass > player, Forget it! Their music is a complete noise, and they are the > selfish, greedy scum, who tried so hard to bring down Napster, and kick > their fans in the nuts ===> Yes, Metallica (namely Lars Ulrich) are a bunch of short-sighted anti-visionaries when it comes to the whole Napster controversy. I have no love for their personal politics at all! They will eventually fall victim to their own misguided zeal as technology advances. Calling their music complete noise, however is not the best way to say you don't like them. > They or their Headbanging counterparts have no place on this digest. ===> I do recognize this. About the only thing I remember was G playing with a wireless in the balcony of the place. Of course, he had to disappear from the stage, and there was this awesome solo from this Vail Johnson guy while he was making his way to the balcony. If I remember correctly, he was kind of a muscular, Swedish looking guy ... but I could be wrong. I remember his name, though, and his playing. Damn good ... Only concert I ever went to where more wine was sold than beer. World Machine US/UK - UK version a lot better ... US World Machine was first Level 42 album I ever heard, and I did not know Hot Water and The Chant were from previous albums ... ironically, I thought they were somewhat weak and out of place from the rest of the album. However, I don't think I ever saw the US version on CD, only the UK version. I still have the Something About You CD video, with the laserdisc portion having never been played ... Probably would sell it if there is some completist out there looking for it ... Or LOZ - if you want it I'll trade it for one of those books your trying to sell ... They were the main act, although another act TC Matic (Belgium) was playing for homepublic, which means that a lot of people left the tent before L42 began to play, leaving lots of space for some twenty true fans. The band was in a good mood, very gigly. At one point, Mark made a mistake on bass while playing World Machine, all the band members were laughing at him, and he couldn't stop giggling, so he couldn't sing his lines. All the time they stayed in the groove, and Mike continued doing back vocals...'made up....maahdup'. Very funny; and very groovy ! Is there anyone on the digest who was there (in rain and mud) on the Bree festival ? cheers, Erik T. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I wanted to add to the Jeff Lorber/Kenny G discussions. Those albums Win mentioned are a must have for funk/fusion fans. Jeff Lorber taught Kenny G a lot about soloing and performance. I recommend the "Jeff Lorber: Definitive Collection" on Arista which has the core tracks picked by Jeff Lorber (for those of you who don't have record players :-)). This is mentioned in the liner notes. The UK version of World Machine is a whole lot better than the US version. The tracks make more sense and fit into the scope of what the group was acheiving. The US version has 2 tracks from "True Colours": "The Chant Has Begun" and "Hot Water" which don't fit too well with the rest of the tunes. They omitted "I sleep...", "Dream Crazy", and "Coup D'Etat". Those are some tite songs. Glad that others on this digest like The System, they are one of my favorite groups, too.
