Thanks, Neil. ------------------------------ Subject: World Machine, myopic-hearing From: Joey Vela Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2001 09:34:47 -0600 > From: "Laurence F. Intruiging suggestion to reorder > POA and some of the other CDs - I'm curious to see what folks responses will > be. Now I'm confused! I realize that the most current US version of World Machine omits "Dream Crazy", "I Sleep On My Heart", and "Coup d Etat" in favor of "The Chant Has Begun" and "Hot Water". However, the original US version, the one that I purchased back in 1986 (only to have it stolen from my car during a car stereo theft in 1993), is identical to the most current UK version, which of course includes "Dream Crazy", "I Sleep On My Heart", and "Coup d Etat". > 1) You Are In My System was a major hit on black radio for The System [along > with the song Don't Disturb This Groove - remember that??]. I totally forgot > that Robert Palmer did a cover of it. Did somebody say Mark did a remix of > this? I'm confused. I remember "Don't Disturb This Groove". It got a fair amount of airplay on MTV. Also, the band that I was in at that time played a cover version of that song. Eric Pseja's response to Ed Bilson regarding Jason Newsted and Steve Harris was right on the money. There is an elitist element here on this digest whose opinion is that any music in a style other than Level 42, jazz, acid-jazz, or funk is somehow inferior, or the artists who play music in any other style are somehow "irrelevant". We experienced some of this elitism a while back with the whole Robbie Williams debate. As the saying goes, "different strokes for different folks". We simply like what we like, or what we choose to. However, there is such a thing as "myopic-hearing". I think we all suffer from it at times. I admit to having myopic-hearing towards country & western and Tejano. However, thanks to careful listening with an open mind and ear, I have come to appreciate some of the really good musicianship that exists in both of these genres. I was also once very prejudiced against hip hop and speed metal (including Metallica). Again, after really listening closely, I was pleased to find that there was true art in these genres as well. Which brings us to Jason Newsted and Steve Harris and why they are discussed here. Jason Newsted is a really rock-solid bassist, and along with his intensity, his sense of timing is really quite good. He is the quintessential speed metal bassist IMHO , who impresses not so much with what he plays but rather with what he doesn't play. Metallica were an extremely tight-sounding unit with Jason; any and all complex rhythmic figures were played with the utmost precision. Even the shortest amount of silence during rests was "loud". He and Lars were one of the best rhythm sections in all of music because of this ability. Just have a listen to the whole And Justice For All CD. Steve Harris is another beast entirely. He is just a top-notch musician period. Along with playing some of the fastest finger-style bass around, he is also an excellent songwriter. He is Iron Maiden's chief composer, music and lyrics. Like Metallica with JN, Iron Maiden has benefited from Steve Harris' timing. When he shadows Dave Murray and Adrian Smith's complex guitar lines, like on the song "Aces High", he does so note-for-note and in perfect time. > PS: Can't you get 42 from 2112 somehow? Yes you can! Just add the outside #'s and then add the inside #'s. LOL! Reminds me of algebra. Remember the "FOIL" technique? I'm glad to see fellow Rush fans on the Level 42 Digest! I've seen Iron Maiden a few times, not for 15 or 20 years, but I remember it all quite well. The lights were good. On two separate occasions, I've had to play Metallica covers. They were easy-peeeezy. If you knew what you were talking about you might have mentioned Why you think they merit discussion - instead of justifying yourself on the basis of their (supposed) reputation. And you couldn't. Could you? If anyone else is interested in changes in personnel in heavy metal acts, why don't you set up a similar e-mail digest to commiserate with one another on? You can talk all about the freaky shapes their basses are, the colour of their leather jackets and stuff. ------------------------------ Subject: US vs UK version From: "Ronald Kuipers" Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2001 18:47:30 +0100 >The US version of World Machine is >inferior to the UK version in my opinon. Explination for this is very simple the US version needed a couple of hits to sell. Well at least that's the tought which was behind it. I bought the UK version altough th US version was much more common in that time. Warning: listening to "more than the odd handful" of these bands induces vomiting. Oh, stop--it's just a joke! I'm very ecclectic, and I love rock'n'roll. But I never saw the appeal of the "M" bands: Metallica, Maiden, Megadeth, etc. Guess I never had that much angst, but to each his own, eh? Speaking of other bands though, here's a new topic for discussion: "Heaven in My Hands" always reminded me of the 80's rock band Saga. I still have the World's Apart and Wildest Dreams albums around here somewhere. Anybody else into them, or think that HIMH sounded a bit like them? Check it out. Or is that BECAUSE it's a departure from Rush. Don't get me wrong, I love Neil's playing, but it's great to hear more from Ben Mink, who co-wrote _My Favourite Headache_. Mink, for those who don't know, has done quite a bit of work with K.D. Lang (remember "Constant Craving"?) and FM, among others. He writes, produces, sings, and plays violin, viola, mandolin, and guitar. All quite well. Level 42 connection: Geddy and Mark both sing and play bass rather well. ******* >From: "goldie100" > >do keyboard players get more women than bass players(!!??) No. All the keyboard players I know take one look at the bass player's long, turgid axe, and faint into a puddle of ecstatic bliss. ...Alex... ------------------------------ Subject: Live moments From: Greg Jamate Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2001 14:26:08 -0500 Hi Levelheads. I thought I'd share some of my favorite live moments. In Love Games from A Physical Presence: I believe I'm right - ga da Da ga da Da ga da Daaaaaah! In Hot Water from the Live at Wembey video, during a bass lead Mark looks at the camera and goes on bass: dedalaDAY dehdalaDAH dehdalaDAY dehdalaDAH At a concert in Italy the band accidently plays the third verse of Sun Goes Down, where the second verse should be. Mark asks "What the hell is going on?". When they get to the proper third verse, Mark sings "Ooooooh watch her dance, again. There must be one like her in every club in every town, again". Small stuff but funny. Anyway, I bought the whole bunch of reissue CD's this week at Amazon.co.uk. The True Colours album however does not look like a level 42 album. The CD is printed with the label of a different CD, namely the soundtrack of a movie called "Meschugge" (http://uk.imdb.com/Title?0154870). Anyone else experienced this? "Other extra curricular activities include remixing Robert Palmer's 'you're in my system" (and than MK says:) "Whoever produced Robert at the time wasn't overly tidy, and there were lots of burps and coughs and farts all over the tape. Of course I thought it was great, I was whapping them all over the remix" CIAO Erik T. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Looks like the next three Friday nights are my "Grooveyard" show on 91.9 KMUN, in Astoria, Oregon of all places. Suggestions for the playlist are welcome - I'm always on the lookout for obscure funk bands to groove to. I figure to play the MicroKid live from the digest CD up front! > > > On a final note, do keyboard players get more women than bass players(!!??) > The replies to this one better be good. When playing solo (thoughtful meandering passages) I received more than my fair share of female attention. Put me in a band, and I'm in the back behind a wall of guitar and horns - may have well as been a potted plant, and often played like same. > > > What place has any discussion about Metallica and Iron Maiden got here? . . . > In > terms of quality music, they are irrelevant. Not so fast. There is something to appreciate in all kinds of music - even this crap. Check out Mr. Sandman! > > > Regards > from the green trees of Oregon aren't they all cut down yet? Their music is a complete noise, and they are the selfish, greedy scum, who tried so hard to bring down Napster, and kick their fans in the nuts They or their Headbanging counterparts have no place on this digest. I do like rock music, but, I Hate Metalica, almost as much as Steps, or S Club 7, who also have no place here I'm sure their is a Metalica digest someplace, chat as long as you like on there about them, but we are 42 fans here, and funk bass is our thing, and No i do not want to be convinced, By the way Win, Tune 88 by jeff lorber, is fantastic, Please leave it out Cheers Des _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ------------------------------ Subject: vail johnson From: John Shuford Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2001 23:19:24 -0800 Wow! Thanks, Winston, for mentioning Vail Johnson. It's been YEARS since I've heard that name. I'd forgotten how good he was. Not as accurate as MK, but thunderous and fast as hell. Pretty funky too.
