You mean no "echo" type delay? Delay can also be so short an interval as to appear nearly simultaneous, yet just slightly behind...thus giving the impression that the intsrument was double-tracked. To further enhance the effect, the delay interval can be modulated with an LFO, which btw is how a chorus-pedal works. Mark got his "chorus" effect in the old days with those Yamaha delays, which he mentioned in a recorded interview I heard recently" trust me, i know how analogue delay pedals work, and i am familiar with short delay patterns that create a double tracked effect. this isn't one of them; it is the sound of two different eq settings, so either we have to assume it was a bi-amped rig with separate mike-ups, or it was double tracked. given the instrument he was using, and the one he wished to emulate (stanley clarkes alembic series I) i think it more likely it was the latter. was the recorded interview you heard the rock masterclass when he is demoing the harminic chord ghostly effects obtained when applying the yamaha delay for both echo and modulation, which he refers to as adding "a little wobble (audience laughs) techincal term; i'm only a bass player remember!"... that is a great session. ------------------------------ Subject: It's not the same for us From: Paul Clifton Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 11:22:30 +0100 You are all wrong. It is Phil. I used to think it was Wally but he denied it. and satire hasn't been possible since 1987; where have you been AG? ------------------------------ Subject: Loz From: Paul Clifton Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 11:28:56 +0100 "Yes, I admit it, I'm not proud. But Ricky Ross is a genius in the same catagory as Boon and Phil when it comes to lyrics." I agree wholeheartedly, although he is actually a far better lyricist than Phil or Boon and as good a pop music composer as Mark or Phil. If picking a favourite 80s band i would be hard pushed to choose between 42, Deacon Blue and Prefab Sprout. All are masters of melody, but 42 get the edge due to their being my first love. Musically I get the best kick from Mark and co, but lyrically Prefab would win. Anyway; good luck with the wedding - hope you have a sunny day! From: Tom Trudell Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 07:44:36 -0700 OK, thanks Eric for the explanation . . . . . . so I get a digest in the mail, but if I want to reply or post, I have to leave the email and go to a website, then how many clicks to finally post? And can you snip the original for reference? I have my doubts, I like the email digest we have, waaaaaaahhhh. Welcome, Canadian Julian. Quite an ecletic list o'bands. I think it's eclectic, but really I've never heard half of them (who's "Rush?) :) But I noticed your description of Level42 as a "perfect listening utopia" and that's often true I believe. Toss 10% of the lyrics in the dumper with the rest of the velveeta and you have your utopia in my humble opinion. and since you started it, our four cats are named Milo, Rufus (a girl), Sacajawea (Hoonie for short), and Mrs. Bigglesworth (Biggs f.s.) Loz, happy marriage thing! It's pretty exciting, eh? Let's see, what can I get a guy in England I don't even know for his wedding present? Hmmmm, I know: An anti-ballistic missile shield! I'll get George W. working on that. It will probably stop every 42nd missile. frequently, -Tom ------------------------------ Subject: answering questions From: lisa harding Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 15:43:37 +0100 I think i missed a thred here but here goes.!! 1) State your name and country of origin Lisa Harding. Shouldn't they have there OWN digest called "we-ain't -funny.com", that way, they can have each other to share all their CRAP with! <<<< What makes this kind of remark any more valid than what I've posted in the last few weeks????? I've tried posting tid bits here and there the last few years about the band, questions, comments, etc. I've HARDLY ever recieved and educated response to those posts. So what does that mean? Was my question about the band too boring? Irrelevant? My point is that, yes I may go too far off the subject. But there is no difference between that, and ignoring a valid question ABOUT THE BAND. Because that seems to be what you are all wanking about, "It's a digest about level 42 which we all love and Ican't enjoy it through all of the crap" Well, participate by responding to the l42 related questions then. I gave up asking because nobody would respond. At least your responding to me now. All I've been reading lately is that a small group of us have been ruining it for the rest of you, I'm sorry you've ruined it for yourself, I've tried it your way. And before you say that I'm one of the ones who was involved in flaming other digests, let's look at the past issues and seethat I was debating Mr. Clifton on the merits, or lack there of, of his arguments. I WAS NOT TELLING HIM THAT HIS MOTHER IS A WHORE AND I DID NOT RESPOND IN KIND. I have never used profanity. Anyone who actually took me seriously over the nation bashing, I apologize. With all that said, PLEASE lighten up and look at the big picture. My active posting is asmuch to blame as your inactive posting. Peace, Bri P.s The man Mr. Clifton is being harrassed by is a good example of inappropriate behavior. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Subject: guaranteed live From: whip @ talk21.com Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 17:12:12 +0100 just looking through the vids ive got and correct me if i am wrong but is the man playing a 5 string on she cant help herself. also i think their version of mr pink on this recording is probably the best i have heard and seen the band play live. lastly the bass solo, words cant describe (so controlled) cheers kev ------------------------------ Subject: Phil on Singing From: Mysterio71 @ aol.com Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 19:59:17 EDT Fellow Levelers, As for the weird falsetto in "It's Not the Same for Us" and "The Bends," the man singing is obviously Phil. We've all heard Mark do falsetto before, and in my humble opinion, it doesn't sound a thing like Mark. Plus, if you look at the credits for Forever Now, Phil is mentioned as a vocalist and drummer. Also, isn't it known that he has a very high nasal, if not week voice? I rest my case.....IT'S PHIL!!! Take care, Tim Wojton
