They played about 10 seconds of the Lessons In Love video, where people have to guess several artists and songs from a particular year in question. Not much I know, but great to see Level 42 on a primetime TV show again. Look out for more of those I LOVE THE 80's shows...it's 1982 next Saturday. Once it rolls around to 1986/87 there HAS to be a bit about our heroes.... If you're not already aware of it, then check out Portrait of Tracy on Jaco's eponymous album. That is a harmonics fest - the album is an amazing showcase. "Come on, Come over" is the funkiest Jaco walking bassline I've heard...apart of course from 'The Chicken' which remains one of my fave basslines EVER. Incidentally, I dug an ancient cassette out of a dark corner of my car this weekend. It was a home-recorded job and was simply labelled "porno music" - a generic term I've coined for the kind of stuff I listen to - but not much help in identifying the artist. The sound was a happy combination of Level 42 and Weather Report: quite fusiony but not too way out and pretty funky - with some great Jaco-style fingerwork and some decent slap, not to mention the other musicians who were superb (the Hammond work especially). It was none other than the Jeff Lorber Fusion album "Wizard Island" circa 1980. It's worth some checking out - especially if you're a Weather Report fan who likes some jazz funk. I've only heard Wizard Island so I don't know what the earlier or later stuff is like (fusion bands can get it badly wrong in that early 80s twighlight zone) but on an earlier album they have a track entitled, "Track 88" Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Jeff is still recording: www.lorber.com Nigel ------------------------------ Subject: Wants list From: "Laurence F. I shed no tears for Jason Newsted leaving Metallica, the biggest band in the world. However, if I ever hear that Steve Harris left Iron Maiden, then I would ball my eyes out for days. :-( Life would never be the same. LOL! On a lighter note, the new Geddy Lee solo album, My Favorite Headache, is really quite good although a departure from Rush. Check it out. Why couldn't you have been there for me about 8 years ago? I met my wife because she came to see one of my band's gigs... and now we've been married for 4 and a half years! Oh the pain! Oh, the wretched, wretched... well no actually, we're both pretty happy with the situation so far. :) Does it help that I was playing keyboards at the time? Now, if that's a recondite reference to the advert voiced several years later by Ian Dury which used the same song, which had the tag line "Allo tosh, gotta Toshiba?", you'd have to say it's pretty darn clever. Of course if it's not, forget I mentioned it. Mainly to attract record company attention. If you are in a band or know someone who is, Or if you can help with promotion or duplication of this CD - please send an email to me. The band must play funk music or related - please no heavy metal, rock, etc. No profits will be made - only to recover costs.
