I would look to literature. The color gold (or yellow) has been used to indicate maturity ("Nothing Gold Can Stay", Robert Frost), or something highly valued via the symbol of the mineral gold. As an extension to the maturity idea, gold (and more yellow) can mean something that is old and decaying, stagnant through decay ("The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock", T.S. Eliot -- yellow fog, yellow smoke), or morally decayed ("Heart of Darkness", Joseph Conrad -- yellow ivory). There are the well known associations between the color yellow and cowardice. I would bet Phil wanted this lyric to mean that this young mans thoughts are mature and of worth or valuable.
