The >drum-sound and the groove isn't the typical PG-groove. I'm very curious if >someone knows about this, and if it isn't Phil: who is it? I think, what Phil meant was, that he doesn't care for the title track. He thinks it's a poor track; even though he played on it. I agree with 'im. I'm struggling to find a poorer song on either Forever Now album. L()Z ------------------------------ Subject: Leroy Williams From: "Randall, Steve" Date: Tue, 3 Jul 2001 06:37:42 -0400 Following Winston's comments yesterday, does anybody know more about Leroy. I believe Jen Reddin and I saw him at Alton Towers in the snow. He had either never heard the numbers before, was on something or was absolutely useless. I plump for the latter as I know loads of drummers who could have done better on first hearing. Nowhere near the beat at all. And they were miming anyway! What did you think Jen? I'd have thought that most English women, on hearing an American say "I pull for the Spurs", would either look blank or run away. Two nations, two languages. I'm very much aware of Leroy Williams playing with Level during some early gigs, but since none of the band is properly introduced during the Gillingham gig, I thought it was possible it may be someone else. I'd love to know how the boys hooked up with Leroy. It may be possible that they knew of him when he was a member of Brit-Funk band 'Hi-Tension' Pascal, a word of advice, you wont sell many discs, when folks can get it for free. :-) Keep us posted on the Ferry Maat gig. Arjan, why not ask Phil your question directly via his current website www.philgould.com? I'm really suprised that more people havent posted questions for Phil, especially seeing how he is responsible for most of the lyrical output of this band. AG, i did happen to catch the Tilbrook vs. kershaw busking thing. pretty funny stuff. I have it as an mpg file if you are interested. Richard, I feel your pain, but keep in mind that live bootlegs DO get passed around from fan to fan. 90% of my live collection was obtained this way. However, it's never been done on the digest like the Gillingham project. Doing a major distribution of a disc has only been done when something VERY special comes up, like this Gillingham disc, which seems to be the earliest known live recording. I'm sure there are lots of folks willing to share material on a private basis, but they sure as hell are not going to try and make copies for 300 people via the digest. How about offering something in trade, and I bet you will find someone willing to do something on a smaller scale. It takes a heck of a lot of work trying to get a digest based copying system in place, and you would be suprised at how few volunteers you get for this stuff. Not everyone has a cd burner, or the time to make a bunch of copies. Hope this helps, Winston ------------------------------ Subject: DVD From: Ian Lovell Date: Tue, 03 Jul 2001 13:36:52 +0100 Hi All, I got my copy of the I-o-W live DVD a last week (speedy response Mark!), I had to get a mate to copy it to video for me so I had to wait 'til the weekend to take a look. All the stuff about sound quality is fine except when you have to watch it on a 14" portable 'cause your 3yr old son is watching Winnie the Pooh on the big set! Anyway, I thought it was great, though I couldn't see myself in the crowd (thought I did for one split second though). And the best bit... after the closing titles, MK shouting the infamous phrase out - classic. Can't wait for Trash2 but I think it should be given a new title - that way we can buy the T-shirts with the new logo... I don't know about you lot but mine is beginning to wear out. Scroll to the bottom: http://www.status-graphite.com/frames/newbass2.htm Price list: http://www.status-graphite.com/forms/ukbass.txt It was very nice to read the Q&A at philgould.com. He seems like a swell lad. Actually now that I think of it, everyone that has been in the band over the years seems to be cool. I get a good vibe from everyone except Jakko who seems a little to cocky for me. While I'm at it, I'd like to state my opinion on the guitar players of L42. If I had to pick a fave, it would be Alan Murphy. He had the most original tone and style in my opinion and I am very much pro "musical individuality". Next would be Boon. I think he's an awesome player and fit the band perfectly. My least fave is of course Jakko. The only person that should sound like Allan Holdsworth, is of course the great Allan Holdsworth. And god, that shirt he's wearing the Guaranteed video is just disgusting. (I intentionally left Allan H. out as I was mainly thinking of guitarists who played with the band live.) If the rest of you feel you must continue to defend them, then maybe there is something wrong, perhaps you are in denial. But who am I, certainly not a psychologist. Honestly, I'm rather fond of Canadia. Being from Boston originally, I'm consumed by hockey. I hear canadia has a lot of that sport up there. Snow is fun too. Why fly all the way to Amsterdam when Vancouver is a 49 dollar flight on SouthWest? So, I think I've proven that whatever anti-candianism (credit goes to Fred for that word) there might be, it's clearly not on account of myself. I thik Lucius Cornelius Sulla said it best, or was it Carrot Top, I'm notsure....ah, it's inmaterial. GoodDay my friends. As I recall, the tables along the railing (which are excellent seats) are all tables for two. You are right that the tables for 4 do not provide a good view of the stage. I recommend ONLY tables for two at the Jazz Cafe. Should have thought to mention that in my previous post! Cheeers - Z. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? For thems that has the "Gillingham" gig cd, is it the same audio quality as that "Morning Silence" mp3 that surfaced a little while ago? Which is to say, not very good . . .? Should I get the DVD? I can't decide. Any Americans that can tell me how much in dollars they paid? The Last Word: Canadians are the lucky people who enjoy all the benefits of being American without any of the drawbacks. I played Y-Chromo Boyz on the 91.9 KMUN Grooveyard show, their new album has a lot of corking good stuff on it, a la Level 42 in 1980-81. Musically they reside strictly in the "instrumental acid jazz" category - although as a musician/composer myself I detest being labelled - so forget the label.
