Madonna, George Michael and robbie Williams are approached. Ure also wants to ask the Bee Gees, Debby Harry (blondie) and Barry Manilow. Don't you think it would be nice to see Mark King also on that Live aid gig ? Mark is a friend of Midge Ure after all. The gig will happen probably at 20 October. (special day for Mark, I know). Then the whole crowd could sing a birthday song for Mark, you never know. I mentioned this to Alex regarding the poll for the live track for the updated website as to whether all these live tracks could be burned onto a CD for the Digesters to have, he didn't have the facility to do this but I then wondered if other Digesters with different bootlegs could perhaps pool their material to create some great CD's for us all to benefit from, I personally have no qualms whatsoever in paying for blank CD's and postage to receive such material, I am totally in agreement with Des Lynch ( Digest 176 ) on this. It is because of the generosity of people such as Stephen Whyte that I myself am now able to receive the Digest CD's and I am now hoping that our fellow L42 fans will do the same, as Stephen says, other people copied them for him so he is happy to now copy them for me, let's see a little team spirit please. As a new subscriber I'm not aware of any protocol or infringements that may exist regarding copying but it would be fantastic if this could become a reality. Lastly, thank God someone has tried to put a stop this infantile bickering between our American and Canadian friends, some comments were 'tongue-in-cheek' but others were quite vicious. I expect to read interesting articles about Level 42 in the Digest not a load of bitching. Due to an extensive research into my own geneaology (A phone call to mom) I discovered that I have a huge chunk of Canadian in my blood. So therefore I have ceased all references to Canadian insuperiority, true as it may be. But cxome on Fred, do you actually believe in your supposed esteemed intelligence that the mark patriotism, legitmacy, or even general knowledge is measured by the ability to recite national anthems? So you took the time to memorize Oh Canada in two different languages, big deal, in high school I tranlated the Iliad from the original latin, so am I like a rocket scientist now? Hardly. If 12 year old girls can memorize Britney Spears songs, then I think that you'll find your postulate a bit lacking in it's ability to support any facts. Huh? I'm so sorry, Brian, but I was defending against the assault on Canada, not contributing to it, as too many people slam Canada for whatever reasons. Unfortunate that you misunderstood such a short reply. And as far as being racist, being racially mixed myself, I find it hard to be racist since I'd probably end up hating a distant ancestor or something. And yes: my father was Canadian, so whatever with your little argument. And BTW: the Illiad and Odessey were originally written in Greek, not Latin. Perhaps another phone call to your Mommy would help you in verifying historical fact as well as your geneaology. I'm really not sure where you formulated the idea that I was racist or that I was Americo-centric (is there such a word?), or else I would not have said anything positive about Canada. The fact that more Canadians percentage-wise know the American national anthem than do Americans themselves demonstrates that Canadians may be more aware of the world beyond their own borders than their American neighbors, a trait that the USA can only begin to acquire. Since I have been away for several months, I duly apologize for not having read your postings. I really have had other pressing matters on my plate. The whole point, besides having rebutted the nasty comments on Canada, was that Level 42 has always had more support in Canada than in the States as far as North America is concerned. I'm not sure why that is, but I've found more Canadian imports of Level 42 stuff in the US than US-distributed stuff. Does this mean that Canadians have better musical taste than Americans as regards Level 42? I certainly hope so - I shudder at the thought of Americans embracing The Beastie Boys. And the possesive pronoun "its" does not take an apostrophe. "It's" is the contraction of "it is". And Canada still rocks, Brian. A shame you don't feel the same way. Fred, The Two-Bit Yankee Californian Bassist ------------------------------ Subject: gillingham thoughts From: "Winston Walker" Date: Fri, 29 Jun 2001 16:44:46 -0400 In addition to Steve Robson's comments on the disc, I noticed the following: 1. Mark plays the "True Colours" bass line during ALMOST THERE 2. At one point Mark says '88' is gonna be on their forthcoming album on ELITE records, so this recording predates the band signing with Polydor. 3. Who the hell is playing percussion on this gig? I distinctly hear percussion being played while all 4 memebers are playing, as Steve noticed. Sadly there are no band member intros. 4. While some of the tunes are not as polished as they would later become, the energy and excitement of this gig is awesome. Big thanks to the Tewes family for unearthing this 20 year old gem.
