Bearing in mind past digest debates, I think the most politically correct approach we can take as a digest is to assume that all the members of Level 42 old and new are gay, and that on the occasions of their marriages and child rearing, they temporarily surrendered their sexual status in order to conform with so called sociological norms. In this way we can have debates about whether or not each member is heterosexual without offending the politically correct movement (quite apart from the fact that the debate would be unnecessary and dull). Alexi Sayle - I think the track was 'Hello John I have got a new motor'. Don't forget 'India - and Pink Rhythm', something else springs to mind that Mark and Mike maybe produced or helped on early in their careers (not Thunderthumbs) - I just seem to remember hearing something somewhere. I know Mike has worked with an America female artist, somebody Lee or Lee somebosy, I can't remember her name. It might be Lee Lindsay, in fact it might just be somebody Lindsey or Lindsey somebody its def. one or the other. Best album cover Level 42 Staring At The Sun The Pursuit Of Accidents Really, a lot of the others weren't up to much. Guaranteed - Forever Now ugggh. Even Running In The Family was mediocre, at least World Machine had some depth to it. I do like True Colours though, when I saw the liner of the Physical Presence reissue revealing the original photos that the Physical Presence artwork was made from I immediately went to True Colours to see if the original photo used for that cover would be in the liner too but unfortunately it wasn't, I would love to see the original photo though. No, if you want classy artwork, you need to go to Level 42 singles. RCA clearly had no idea though. However, most singers in bands have a drinks bottle which they resort to in the blackout at the end of a number. Club and pub bands resort to a mouth full of beer between verses. (Some stage managers however have a thing about liquids on stage.) You don't want too much liquid in your mouth all the time, as even drawing in a few drops of saliva into your airways when breathing in very quickly and deeply can initiate a coughing fit. If you are in a show, with exits and entrances, you can have a drink when you are off stage. Snatching a quick drink does not interfere with your diction, unlike chewing, which is why I believe chewing to be insulting to the audience. Chewing gum is disgusting and it's about time it was banned anyway. It's worst than smoking, and makes a mess when thrown on the ground. It's the next stage up from pre-teenage boys spitting continuously. Although most opera singing teachers would not agree with this, it did seem that I was able to abuse my voice more when I used to smoke. I suppose it's like being in training. Steve Randall ------------------------------ Subject: mk and robert palmer From: "Winston Walker" Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 06:52:53 -0500 FYI, a small correction for Erik from yesterday. Mark King did not produce 'you are in my systen' by Robert Palmer. He did whoever do a remix of this track, which is a cover version of the tune by the us act 'The System'. A great show > but what really got my goat was Mark chewing while he sang. It's not cool, > it's disrespectful and flippant. The sort of "I hate the audience" attitude > one expects from The Beautiful South, not L42. I disagree entirely. And I never chew gum! Look, even Miles Davis' flippancy was not "I hate the audience." It is already a feat of circus standard to be able to play like MK, and sing, and dance, and even fly through the air, all at the same time! To be able to chew gum at the same time is sheerly astounding. I've met him, once, years ago, in a petrol station, and the way he freely gave 5 minutes of his time to chat about strings and things implies to me that he is far from disrespectful of his fans. My theories as to Why he chews gum are: 1- when you can do 5 impossible things, why not add another? 2- when you take drugs to play that fast, you chew a lot; 3- he sings a different rhythm to that which he plays: maybe he chews in a cross rhythm, and maybe that helps; 4- perhaps he sticks something in his gob to prevent Jarrett murmuring into the vocal mike, or maybe to stop himself from going "deo, deeeeee-o" all the time. By the way, Alex - I believe that bass players tend to get more women than drummers, is that true??. Cheers, Lozzie xxx ################################# Reply: Of course bass players get more attention from women - what woman can resist the sight of such dextrous fingers twiddling with such rhythm, such artistry - and such stamina! (and I'm not being gender specific - female bass players get attention too) Warning to other slappers though: the motion we use, similar to that employed by cheese-wire 6 string guitar players, looks, to women, more like the action of a "soloist," if you get my drift. Pardon the sexual inyerendo. Love to you all, Ed the Bass ------------------------------ Subject: Non Smoker!!!! From: ChrisMurgy @ aol.com Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 13:04:48 EST Reason given to chew gum yesterday (Paul Spencer) Quote just before encore "Yes I smoke! So here are some stinkers - Flying on the Wings of Love Woman Starchild Weave Your Spell - the instrumental break is great though Dance on Heavy Weather Can't Walk You Home Tracie She Can't Help Herself There was a really horrible one on Forever Now which isn't on the Resurgence reissue. I can't remember it now but it really sucked. I think in general the early albums are mainly saved nowadays by the instrumental tracks. I personally have a soft spot for guff like Why are you leaving?, but it really is so bloody cheesy. Okay, see ya! ------------------------------ Subject: Doggy translated? Circle the best choice below. 1. Yes, bass players get more women than they get drummers. 2. Yes, bass players are a magnet for women. And fleas, nits, cold sores, and bovine spungiform encephalitis. 3. Yes, bass players do attract more women. But then they always come up with some line like "see you at the bar," and we all know that that marks the end of the relationship. ...Alex... ------------------------------ Subject: BMR Vs Level 42 From: GJWillett @ aol.com Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 17:09:25 EST Dirk wrote: > check http://www.dotmusic.com/dance/charts/coolcuts.asp > > this means the promos are out there already for a while!! > I keep my eyes peeled on the newest DJ promo releases in the UK... So I guess my suggestion of MK's contribution on the Ferry Aid single (even if I was wrong) and my subsequent offer to tape it for you (see my post, Digest # 14) was not helpful? Or maybe you already knew about it? Or maybe you have it? Or maybe you don't care about it? Or maybe you're just a rude git? How would I know? Mate, would it kill you to respond to someone's offer of information or help after you requested it? Even if it's "thanks but no thanks." On the occasions I've asked for info on the Digest, I've always replied to those who responded to my question. Call me precious, Erik, but politeness is free. And necessary in an environment like the Digest.
