John Lee Hooker An Impeccable (BLUES) Jeff ------------------------------ Subject: dvd and dolby prologic From: "Winston Walker" Date: Sat, 23 Jun 2001 08:11:43 -0400 Rob, sorry ut you are incorrect regarding PCM track and Dolby Prologic. Just because a recording is PCM does NOT mean it's compatible with Dolby Prologic surround sound. By 'compatible' I mean that it was mixed for FRONT, CENTER, LEFT, and matrixed SURRROUND channel. Sure you can play it with your system set to Surround mode, but you can do that with any type of source. It doesnt mean it was intended that way by the artist or mixer. When you play it back, and it's not encoded for surround, it sounds all screwed up, like what you described. Also, i'm darn sure this gig was NOT recorded in 5.0 or 5.1, it was a stereo recording. The DVD was an afterthought, as some fans tossed the suggestion to Mark, after the recording was done. Lolita, gotta correct you, Pier 17 was not at the South St. Seaport. it was over on the west side highway. I've seen TONS of concerts' there,. my fave being Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Joe Satriani. And a special appearance by Jaco pastorius. (he didnt play, he just ran around the audience, and pelted a guy with a pretzel) Sorry, Don, but you are mistaken. Sure Dolby Digital is part of the spec, but it DOES not HAVE to be on the disc. And it's not on quote a few cheap discs, and some music titles. Keep in mind, not everyone has a Dolby Digital set up. Sure i'd love to hear Mark with some sax, but who is gonna play with him for free. Dont forget, the band has to be played, and I dont think Mark is getting rich with 2 week tours. :-) Win ------------------------------ Subject: dolby digital on DVD follow up From: "Winston Walker" Date: Sat, 23 Jun 2001 08:18:17 -0400 Hey guys, sorry to bore some of you to tears with this crap, but i just thought of something. On a lot of my titles, as stated previously, there is no Dolby Digital track, because DD is compressed to hell. These music titles provide PCM streo only, and here is the legend printed on these discs: THIS DISC IS ENCODED WITH AN 'UNCOMPRESSED' PCM SOUNDTRACK FOR OPTIMUM 'STEREO' FIDELITY Winston ------------------------------ Subject: Level 42 - Live at Wembley - Running in the Family Tour From: "Dabbo" Date: Sat, 23 Jun 2001 13:34:38 +0100 I have a bootleg cassette of the L42 concert at Wembley for the Running in the Family tour and there are a number of tracks on the tape which are not on the video. Does anyone know why these tracks were deleted from the video that was finally released in the shops ?? It would be excellent if the video could be re-released with all the tracks on it !!!!! Dabbo ------------------------------ Subject: off topic dvd From: "Willem" Date: Sat, 23 Jun 2001 15:20:58 +0200 Is it possible to covert dvd to divx so it can be burnt onto normal cdr? and be viewed on dvd-player on tv-screen? ------------------------------ Subject: stuff and nonsense From: Tom Trudell Date: Sat, 23 Jun 2001 09:01:56 -0700 Hey all, a bunch of rambles! 1) OK, I'll get the DVD, even though I can't watch it. What a fan, eh? 2) The "One Man" album is awesome. One Man the song is fabulous - listen to the outro where the 18th century strings mix with the 21st century trashed out space effects - I think it's brilliant. And the lyrics are intelligent. 3) Take any L42 album, especially World Machine and after, and I'll put it at the top of any list of high quality "studio" albums. There is tremendous skill in making the recording magic happen. The songs are structurally complex, mixed perfectly, mastered well, there is counterpoint all over the place. It's near-genius in the studio in my opinion. I would love to have been a fly on the wall at their sessions. Does anyone know of any resource that gives insight into the L42 recording process from a technical standpoint? equipment used, studio notes, etc? I figure it's a long shot, but it might help me. 4) Bass players, what brand of strings are good for an articulate funk sound? take care then, -Tom ------------------------------ Subject: Marcus Miller Live At The Forum London From: "Desmond Lynch" Date: Sat, 23 Jun 2001 17:05:57 +0100 HI Levelheads went to see Marcus at the forum in london on 22nd june absolutely amazing, he just gets better and better with each album, and the band he now has behind him are just out of this world, you can get too "Poppy" & "too Heavy", but you just cannot get too FUNKY, Marcus pulled tricks out of the bag at this gig that just blew the socks off the crowd, slapping, fingerstyle, tapping, and solo's to die for, anyone who misses this tour................ was anyone else there?? or in manchester????? laters Des Lynch _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ------------------------------ Subject: Level 42 as opening act From: "John Shuford" Date: Sat, 23 Jun 2001 09:20:50 -0700 Micro Kids - Level 42 opened for the Police very early on (maybe 1981 or 1982). I recall hearing that they got booed off stage by a bunch of twonks who were there only to see the Police. Years later, when they kept touring the US (1986-87) they opened for Steve Winwood, then Madonna, then toured on their own, then ended opening for Tina Turner. Winston is right: a DVD can come with an uncompressed PCM stereo track and no Dolby Digital whatsoever! Should've known better, Win's the AV King! :o) Cheers - Z. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! I received my DVD, bought the Apex AD-3201 DVD player per Winston's recommendation, and I am really enjoying the IOW concert on my 27" TV. This player is awesome and is quite a steal at $129. Works great. I think the DVD sounds fine. Sure everyone has an opinion on how the mix could be better but I'm just glad I have a DVD of the show at all. I do feel that the sound is definitely better than the Quicktime files on the CD-Rom. Top 10 (I couldn't pick 5) favorite drummers in random order: Stewart Copeland, Chad Sexton (311), Neil Peart, Hilary Jones, Manu Katche, Terry Bozzio, Phil Gould, Akira Jimbo, Carter Beauford, and Virgil Donati. There are some terrific songs that never got played (or played very little) or dropped out of the setlist over the years because of the need to play the hit singles, promote the albums, or give what they paid to see - so to speak. But it seems like there's some really fun material. I think it would also be great to hear MK play the entirety of The Essential. shuf ------------------------------ Subject: Level 42 Gigs From: "John F. Moore" Date: Sat, 23 Jun 2001 19:43:01 -0700 Level 42 Gigs I must admit that my past experience with live concerts in the past before I saw Level 42. Either it was sound problems, bad musicians or a host of other problems. The first time I saw Level 42 was April 27th, 1986, at Massey Hall in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. by the second song, I was truly energized by their talent and ability. Not only did they wow Me, but I picked up the bass once again. Truly inspiring! The Steve Winwood/Level 42 concert at Maple Leaf Gardens was good, but I was a little disappointed buy Boon's exit from the band. I can't really remember the musical lineup as I was heavily consumed by the pot smoke. At the Level 42/Madonna Concert, July 4th, 1987, Exhibition Stadium, Toronto, I thought Mark was such a trooper, playing great while in a leg cast! It seems that he had a bit of a spill while in Washington, D.C. My Sister, little brother and myself were surrounded by Madonnites and by the end of their set, I believe Mark and Company turned a few Madonna fans into listeners of Brit Funk! Finally, I saw Mark and company at the Crystal Bowl Palace, London, England. I was bless with talent that I could come to Great Britain and practice my craft of Animation, learn about my forefathers and of course, listen to Level 42 with true fans. I don't know how Mark did it, but apparently the temperature rose to around 80 degrees and well, you Brits love to strip down! This is a personal plea to Mark: Come to Las Vegas!! They love great musicians here in Vegas and well, you're one of them! Thanks for the space, John in Las Vegas, NV 89145 U.S.A. ------------------------------ Subject: Gigs... From: "Jennie Irvine" Date: Sun, 24 Jun 2001 08:46:08 +0100 Hi everyone, I was just wondering if any of you guys had heard about the "Here & Now" gig at Wembley Stadium in November? For any of you 80's fans out there, I think you should go buy a ticket!!! Some of the bands playing at this gig are: Go West, T'pau, Paul Young, Curiosity Killed The Cat, Kim Wilde and loads of others!!! The gig is on the 15th of November, so its just before Marks gigs. Also, just wanted to let you know I called Ryde Theatre, but there is no news of Mark booking the place for a gig this year - but as soon as I hear anything I will let you all know, seeing as I live a minutes walk away from the Theatre!!! LOL Another thing, if Mark is actually reading the Digest, a big thank you to you for the lovely Wedding Card - it was really kind of you!!!! And also thanks for the DVD, my new husband and I giggled at what you wrote on the insert - Im gonna have to get used to that, hehehehehe!!!! Bye for now, Jen (from the IOW) xxxxxxxxxxxxx
