My personal favourite tracks being 'If I had something', 'Love Wars' and the title track which has such a cool groove. 'Pamela' always makes me smile too. 'Changing the guard' is certainly the track, along with 'Love Wars' that I would expect to stay in November's live sets as they seem to be not only a fave of Mark's but also for many of us some of the highlights of the set. All the bass Martin ------------------------------ Subject: stuff From: "Winston Walker" Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 06:24:13 -0400 Lee - why not email Mark's website for qty info? Did they ever play aby gigs with the Thompson twins? They were booked on 3 gigs here in NY with the Thompson's, but before the gigs they left the tour to join Madonna. I got rid of 2 sets of tix. I declined to see Level 42 with Madonna. I love them, but not that much. :-) rean, i was listening to it the other day at work, ONE MAN that is, and i think some of those track hold up VERY well. Not a bad effort at all, i'm happy with it, and I didnt miss the bass. :-) Hey Paul, thanks for the link to 'Keep Climbing' on CDNOW. Sounds like a smart idea, wonder how many orders he can generate from that? Mike - think the biggest reason that European equipment handles the NTSC system is so folks can view tapes, from the USA. Since Hollywood makes so much money producing these flicks, a HUGE market has turned up for NTSC tapes and DVD's. I know quite a few folks who import US DVD titles, because among other things, they are cheaper via the net, are UNCUT, have mroe extras, and you can get them months before the 'official' UK release date. David - all the DVD units i've be discussing will play the PAL signal on an NTSC television. Basically the unit converts thr signal from PAL to NTSC inside the player, and spits out a nice NTSC signal for your normal TV. Also, i'm under the impression that you computer based DVD player will have no problem at all playing the DVD. :-) tcoy, WInston ------------------------------ Subject: Re: DVD stuff again From: "Rob Nieuwenhuis" Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 12:23:18 +0200 > Ron, regarding the sound quality of the DVD.. I've > not gotten my copies yet, but I do have a few concert > DVD's from Japan that are NOT in SURROUND sound, > and do NOT have Dolby Digital soundtracks. Winston, The DVD is PCM stereo, with means that it is compatible with Dolby Prologic. You can hear it when you put a normal CD over a Dolby Prologic set up. All high frequency's will be heard over the surround speakers. I think the problem with Mark's DVD is, that it was recorded as Dolby 5.0 (or 5.1) but was mastered as Dolby Stereo (Prologic compatible). The sound of the keyboards is so load and clear over the surround speakers, very nice! Just the vocals and bass, drums also a little, will be muted. Yesterday I listened to it in normal stereo, but you can hear the problem also, but less. Anyway, it is great that the DVD finally got produced! "Cu at the bar..." From: "Dreaming Lady" Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 10:58:05 -0000 I was thinking since I've been here in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK for two weeks now and I don't really know anyone except my boyfriend here, I need to meet people! :)) And what more fun than to meet L42 fans? I want a meeting! A gathering! A FanFest! :) Is anything in plan for the summer? I guess Mark won't start his playing until the autumn? Any ideas? :) Im sure we could just meet and go to a pub or something... Good idea, This CD has had permanent residence in my car cd auto changer! I think I have voiced this before, but I think that One Man (the album) probably is one of the most grown up and sophisticated albums to come from L42 sources since the hey day of Standing/True Colours. Yes, there is some frivoulous material there (Pamela), some inacceassable at most levels (Resupply) and good old feel good rocking (Changing The Guard), but what impresses me most about this album, is the much more upmarket, stylish feel it exhudes. It contains songs with depth and quality (IMO). Something that has been lacking since the other L42 albums mentioned above. I can understand why some of the L42 fans were a little disappointed, but it's not all about playing 150 mph bashing out solo's every 2 seconds. And this is the nub of it all, I think Mark would get a greater sense of achievement when congratulated on a work such as One Man than 'Mark King's 100 Greatest Slap Tunes To Funk To...Volume 43..'. Obviously, do not under-estimate Boon's input on the album, which was enourmous. It just goes to demonstrate that the combination of the original band members, whether all together or in smaller groups, consistently produce quality material with depth. Not something a lot of current artists are capable of (as a lot don't even write their own stuff). Long live the amazing talent of the members of L42 (all guises). Have A Good Weekend All! I know because I had a ticket to the NY show that was supposed to be at Pier 17, which is the South Street Seaport. I was all psyched to go, and Level 42 cancelled. Half the people who were going asked for their money back because of that. That was the only time in my life I ever actually held a ticket for Level 42's original lineup, and of course it turned out to be my only chance. I am still upset about that. They played a venue a mile from my hometown opening for Steve Winwood [a place called The Barn at Rutgers University], but I couldn't go because I had a midterm down at Penn in Philly - I would not have made it to NJ in time. All my friends who attended Rutgers went, were in the front row, and said they loved the show. They weren't even fans, and everybody knew I was crazy about them so it was even more upsetting. My heart breaks to this day thinking about that... Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: DVD - SHMEVD From: "bunty omar" Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 11:45:52 -0400 Dear Mark, Is it really 3 years since One Man? Pamela, Half Written Songs and One Man were bloody awful, the rest, not bad and a couple were really fucking good. It's just that your voice aint quite what it used to be and it kind of shows in studio stuff, but on stage you are King, the One Man stuff sounds bloody great live and actually rekindled the flames for me and afterall, it was just one album and you kind of redeemed yourself with Trash. It's always great to hear the old L42 stuff live (with the exeptions of the inevitable SABY,LIL medley spam), but it's better to hear your solo stuff next to it. I'm dying to hear some Trash2 stuff at the JC in Nov rather than pure pathos (which is good for half an hour) and it would be nice to see a sax on stage this year with a bit of improv bass stuff, a Q&A section on your website would be good and a proper studio album doing what you know best would be nice too. Please ignore what the nasty people say about your DVD and be sure to break off 5 minutes into your JC set to allow enough time to speak to all of your fans. But if you choose to do none of the above, just do one thing Mark, please leave those bloody awful suits at the hire shop this year! Ok, but we're having to watch the CD-ROM version on our computers anyway (unless your TV plays CD-ROM). Having the DVD will at least improve the picture & sound, and allow watching the entire show in one go. And who says you can't hook your PC up to your stereo system? I watch all my music DVD's on my Mac, with sound from a pair of Event 20/20BAS powered monitors--it's a pretty worthwhile way to enjoy the discs. > Just becuase it's a DVD does NOT mean it has a > SURROUND track, or a Dolby Digital track for that > matter. Agree on the first part, but not the second. Not all DVD's have a surround mix, but unless I'm mistaken, they all have Dolby Digital (mono, stereo, or surround) because it's part of the DVD spec (special DTS discs excluded, of course). True or no? > I am definitely going to at least two shows - I am > just waiting to see if there is an Isle of Wight > show announced before I decide my dates. Ditto for me. Last year Mark waited so late to announce the IOW show that I'd already booked everything. Hate that I'm not there in the front row on the video! This year, I'm waiting as long as possible to book, so as not to miss the IOW gig, if there is one (let's keep our fingers crossed). From: "alien horse" Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 13:31:17 -0400 WOW! Thank you Mr. Waller! I LOVE 'Influences' and had never heard any of it's tracks performed live at concerts or live recordings of any of it's tracks. Great animation at your site too! :) Thanks again! My first Level42 gig was in Spring 1986 at the University Of Buffalo in Cheektowaga, New York. Trouble Funk opened for L42 and L42 opened for the headlining act, [...are you ready?...] The Alarm! Anybody else here also attend that show? There were about eight bands playing from mid afternoon into the night. :) >Anyway, more 42 orientated, I think they supported the "Thompson Twins", >and of course, (if anybody has the Definitive Biography) the "Police", to a >very angry German crowd! >Lee Besides Steve, Phil and Myself, anyone else here interested in having a sax played at Mark's upcoming gigs??? Krys Mach is interested in playing with Mark again and I'd like to rally some interest from other concert attending fans if possible... Wouldn't it be great, no more cheesy keyboard simulated sax sounds from Lyndon's rig! Whadayasay all?!? Only slightly related, My buddy Spacey T, kickass guitarist of Fishbone (YES they are still around and just as fantastic as in the mid and late '80s!!!...damn, they are only in their mid-thirties... ;] ), is also a kickass bass player and further, a fan of Mark King! Fishbone is presently on tour in The South and Midwest of the U.S.A.. If you're in the area(s) and want to see a GREAT show, check them out and before they go on ask Tracey to play some funk for you on one of Norwood's beautiful 5-string Warwicks post-show, before teardown. Fishbone's vibrant saxman/vocalist/lyricist, Angelo Moore's spoken word tour coincides. :D http://www.fishbone.net http://www.DrMaddVibe.com T.C.O.Y., Karla Tillers :) _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
