Lee has tried to get his hands on one albeit without success. So if you could help me out I would grateful if you could contact me on the above address with details so that I can forward them on to Lee. I expect him to burst into "Hot Wader" at any moment. Anybody else know any lookalikes? Steve Randall ------------------------------ Subject: Couple of things From: "ztavendl" Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 13:47:31 +0100 Hi everyone Does anyone know exactly (or approx) the amount of Isle of Wight DVDs there are left? Im using a Pioneer Player through my computer that is supported by a hardware decoder card. Playback is fine but some films suffer because of the 15" screen! The thing is ive also got a region changer, but i dont think it changes PAL to NTSC. Anyway, more 42 orientated, I think they supported the "thompson twins", and of course, ( if anybody has the definitive biography) the "Police", to a very angry German crowd! I know many of you aren't that keen on it, it was a shock at first not hearing much bass in the mix but once you get over that it all settles down. You know I was listening to it again the other night and it's like a fine wine that has aged very well. A lot of the tracks have really grown on me the way that level 42 songs do. Tracks like IF I HAD SOMETHING, BITTER MOON and LOVE WARS are really beautifully crafted. I hated Love Wars the first time I heard it , but it was after hearing it live in 1999 that I began to fall in love with it. CHANGING THE GUARD is an obvious crowd pleaser (great guitar solo) and HALF WRITTEN SONGS is underrated. Most of all though it really flows well from track to track, like a good album should. It feels like a good album. Evocative lyrics from Boon and Mark round things off in style. Anyway - that's enough from me What do others think ? I'd much rather get the full impact with a 27" or larger screen, and have the sound pumping through my stereo. The pc is fine for small clips, but sucks in my opinion for watching an entire show or movie. Nathania - Eric, Lolita and myself all have plans on attending a few November gigs. Pascal - unfortunately US sold DVD players do NOT come with switches to defeat macrovision, or change from PAL or NTSC. You would have to purchase a special player like the APEX models I mentioned, or perhaps purchase a 'modified' unit. NTSC, while not the standard in Europe, is very popular. PAL is not at all popular in the USA. :-( Royal - from what I know, ALL Pioneer models require a HARDWARE change to allow multi region playback, unlike some other players that have software hacks. I'm not sure about Pioneers ability to play PAL titles. Ron, regarding the sound quality of the DVD.. Are you sure this DVD is made to be played in SURROUND MODE? Just becuase it's a DVD does NOT mean it has a SURROUND track, or a Dolby Digital track for that matter. I've not gotten my copies yet, but I do have a few concert DVD's from Japan that are NOT in SURROUND sound, and do NOT have Dolby Digital soundtracks. Niacin - Blood, Sweat & Beers (live in japan) is one such DVD. It took me damn near an hour to look at the packaging and figure out the soundtrack was PCM stereo. I thought my player was on the fritz. FYI, Niacin is a fusion trio of Dennis Chambers on drums, John Novello on keys, and Billy Sheehan on Bass. Good stuff. tcoy, Winston ------------------------------ Subject: Gigs, DVD From: Lolitaj @ aol.com Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 12:56:26 EDT Nathania, I am definitely going to at least two shows - I am just waiting to see if there is an Isle of Wight show announced before I decide my dates. Out of the 10 shows I have been fortunate enough to see in the last two years, that one last November was the best, IMO. I like the venue as well as the crowd, and will definitely attend that one if he announces it. I didn't realize the DVD thing was such a problem. I bought mine about six months ago for only $139, and it plays both PAL and NTSC automatically - no switching is required. I would recommend to folks who are having problems to think about getting a cheap one, as outlined by Winman and Dan. There is one for $119 out there and it is hassle-free. I first became a fan in the mid 80's through listening to someone else's "World Machine" album via a coach stereo on a school trip to Austria, I was hooked by the heavy bass lines and the hard hitting funk theme of the album. I bought it straight away on my return and have followed them ever since. I have all the albums and some singles and was very pleased when the re-issues came out giving fans like myself a chance to hear some early/rare tracks. I was priveleged enough to see the great ones only once in 1991 at Sheffield City Hall on the "Guaranteed" tour but I managed to see Mark's band put on a cracking show last year in Newark on the "Trash" tour. I am very anxious to acquire rare LFT material and because I only have limited access to the net I have only just been able to register and don't have the opportunity to scour the Digest archives, my main question to the Levelheads out there is - HOW CAN I GET HOLD OF ANY RARE LEVEL 42 MATERIAL?, I am particularly interested in acquiring both the WDR Rockpalast videos, the CD bootleg known as "The White Funky" and most definitely, all the Level 42 Digest CD's and Tapes ( as I was unaware of any of them existing before looking on the net ). If anyone has or knows of any other rare material could they please point me in the right direction. I am now registered for the "Live in Gillingham '81" CD and am looking forward to expanding my collection further. If anyone can shed any light on acquiring any rarities I would be more than grateful for their help. Looking forward to hearing from you all TCOY Richard ------------------------------ Subject: The Essential live From: "Paul Waller" Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 21:39:03 +0100 Can any of you technical boffins out there please tell me. I'm making an autorunning CDR in Flash on my PC ie: an executable projector. I want the CD to be Mac and PC compatible. What do I need to do to satisfy the Mac requirements? Sorry that wasn't Level 42-related. That said, i've got Mark's DVD now and i'm very pleased with it! How does it compare with the VCD's some of you made? What a great find 'Morning Silence' was! I managed to download it in full last night - sounds like they hadn't played it much at that point. I've got the new Incognito album and it hasn't done much for me yet. I've only flicked through it briefly though. One album i'm really into at the minute is "Simple Things" by Zero 7 - very nice chill out music, similar to "Moon Safari" by Air. I've started a Level 42 live site at www.paulwaller.co.uk - there's not much up there at the moment however there is a live excerpt of "the essential" and a rare version of "dance on heavy weather" if anyone's interested. If anyone's got any suggestions please let me know by e-mailing me from the site or level42 @ paulwaller.co.uk If anyone is interested in hosting this site for me i'd be very grateful - I think i've only got 5mb :-( Later, Paul ------------------------------ Subject: IOW DVD in the USA From: Mike Prudence Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 21:52:42 +0100 Hi all, Just wanted to add a couple of cents for our American friends trying to play the IOW DVD... Sadly, the world of NTSC and PAL just don't mix. Fortunately for us outside the USA, there is little commercial benefit in producing PAL only items of consumer kit, so almost any modern TV/DVD/VCR purchased in Europe will sync to and decode both PAL and NTSC signals. Unfortunately, it ain't quite the same story in the US, for reasons that escape my simple logic. However, those digesters who are having trouble might like to check out the following:- 1) Your DVD player may well be playing back the PAL signal correctly. An indicator for this would be that the DVD plays, but you get a black and white or unstable picture on your TV. 2) If that's the case, your DVD player is probably OK - it's your TV that is not able to sync to and decode the PAL signal. In this case, if you're in the market for a new TV, sadly taking your DVD player and the IOW disc to your local Wiz or Circuit City of whatever is the only way to find a TV that is happy with both PAL and NTSC TV formats. If you get really stuck, find a friend with a hardware DVD decoder card or a PC graphics card with video out. The word seems to be that PC based DVD players will quite happily output in whatever resolution and colour framing you set your software to. Hence you can take a PAL encoded DVD (720 x 576 resolution, 50 fields per second) and get it output at NTSC frame size and 60 fields. Quite how this works is slightly beyond my experience, but I've done it the other way around with an NTSC DVD and a PAL TV output from a Matrox G400 AGP card. On a completely different note, anyone going to see Marcus tomorrow night at the Forum?? The excellent live cd they made in 1997 is also still available thru my uncle's email: notuxedo @ fermate.nl (also for more info & tell him to keep the band up)! Website: www.fermate.nl The cd costs +/- Fl. 25,- (Dutch Guilders) that would be +/- 7 UKP I can ensure if you love the 80's, you gonna love this excellent recorded cd also,as i have sended also this official cd to some of you. Even if you have something that will play a PAL DVD, if you hook the player up to an NTSC TV, are you still in a world of hurt? Also, someone mentioned that PowerBooks will play PAL DVDs. My old powerbook died, and I am now typing this on my new Titanium Powerbook (which means I can not only now play the CD-ROM version of the Isle of White show that has been sitting gathering dust in want of computing horsepower, but now I can casually ignore the instructions to quit all other apps in order to play the disks). The Powerbook DVD software, however, is not OSX compatible. I can reboot in OS9, but why bother if the DVD software won't do PAL. Also, if I can't output the powerbook display to a TV, with my little walkman headphones for use on the train, I probably won't see/hear any advantages offered by a DVD over the Quicktime version anyway.
