HO YUSS!!! Now you're talking. Much underplayed live but such a fantastic groove. And the sax takes it to the heights. It was the first song in the set that was used for the Physical Presence recordings, as I recall. Now there's a thought. How can the suggestion be made to Mark that he gets a sax in on this year's shows? The one and only Krys Mach seems to be the obvious choice. What does the team think? Ah yes, I remember it well... it was the Hexagon in Reading, I was there and yes Mark made a complete tish of that song..! The funniest bit of that particular gig was the singalongaMark bit in Turn It On, only part of which made it onto vinyl ("OK Reading... you know that we're making a record... I said YOU'RE ON RECORD!"). Our first attempt at it was pretty damn feeble, and Mark was not impressed. He stopped playing, glared furiously at us and bellowed into the mic, "That was f**king terrible!". Naturally, we all cheered. "Listen," he added, "we were in Woolwich last night, and Woolwich is a shithole... but they can sing better than YOU!". Needless to say, our second attempt was a bit better. ------------------------------ Subject: Radiogrammehead! From: "David Goodall" Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 11:06:43 -0000 Hi! >>Radiohead; the most tuneless vile waste of studio time since Pat & Mick's >>'I haven't stopped dancing yet'. .. >>Critically acclaimed for droning on about a load of rubbish >Yes, Radiohead could be a good band if they could only come up with >something as emotive as, say, Fashion Fever. Yeah- sorry to pursue this off-topic thread but I've gotta put my oar in here. Ok, you may not find Radiohead to your taste- fair do's- but I think you could certainly _argue_ that they're one of the most original and innovative bands of the last 5-10 in the UK. OK Computer is pretty much a classic and Amnesiac is pretty damn good too (I really like the mix of electronic sounds and 'traditional' guitar sounds). They've certainly evolved and are not afriad to experiment- a trait that is sadly lacking in a lot of UK rock bands (in my opinion). Although I must admit I was _this close_ to joining the slagging match against the Lighthouse Family- so maybe I'm just as bad! :-) (Þakka þér fyrir!) From: Tom Trudell Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 07:24:05 -0700 Dear Tenthsun et al, Interesting thoughts! Don't like "My Father's Shoes," eh? That's one of my favorites, wouldn't you know . . . its "factory dust" on his shoes, not from the "dust bowl." I appreciate the metaphor of the fancy boots to "Judas' Silver" - it speaks to anyone whose career choices have substituted the real elements of earth, air, and water with cubicles, databases, and phosphorescence. In my twisted mind, anyway . . . My Father's Shoes is twangy, delightfully so in my opinion, as the twang goes nicely with the snare rimshot on 2 and 4. Love that groove. As for L42 not seeming to fit with Kansas prairies, or the American West in general, I might agree, but it seems they were influenced somehow by the American West. Mark's solo album 'Influences" has him leaning against a tree contemplatively scanning the panoramic vista of the G. A. W. while trying not to split his ill-chosen white pants. And I've seen the "desert" in an early video. I like it when people comment on the rythmic "needs" of a song! Your suggestion of a "slower, loping gait to underscore the rural subtheme" . . .that's good. I picture Mark and Mike in dusters or chaps faced off on a dusty 1800's western town, ready to gunfight, a lonesome tumbleweed drifts by, a dirt devil in the background, while the shopkeepers anxiously board up their storefront windows and Miss Kitty cries her heart out. Or maybe it's Rosa from Rosa's Cantina in El Paso. maybe that should be Mark squaring off with Phil. perhaps I've gone too far . . . -Tom > MY FATHER'S SHOES DON'T. I find it very > hard to accept Englishmen singing about something so American. True that > factory scenario could apply anywhere. But I think the lyrics mention > something about dust on his father's shoes. Add that in with that twangy, > country-sound and I'm thinking Kansas praries which don't exactly fit Level > 42. Also, I can't help but think the tempo is just wrong; the song is too > fast and the rhythm structure needs to be changed. It needs a slower, more > loping gait to underscore that rural subtheme. Oh well... > > Just some thoughts:-) > > Tenthsun (aka Terri) ------------------------------ Subject: Nationality From: "Brian Flint" Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 15:33:58 Firstly, Alex, I didn't mean the drummers were american, I meant that I am american so therefore the list was americanized, but since you brought it up, yes Neil Peart is Canadian, but what is it to be Canadian, since the only reason Canada is a sovereign nation, is because the U.S. hasn't been inclined to conquer them, they are still canadian. At any moment however, our economy could get really bad, orthe nation needs something to unify over, or any of a number of reasons the U.S. deems it necesarry to have a little war, canada would become a province of the U.S., so while you are right, you are only right out of the goodness of our governments heart. If I were a canadian citizen, I start memorizing the star spangled banner. Oh, my use of caps the other day can be attributed soley to the pimply face techno geek that wrote the software for our esteemed Superior court here, the software won't recognize a thing unless it's in caps. Freakin bastards. While we are on the subject of the American Empire as it expands north. Let me list off my top five favorite live shows. #1 Rush-Presto #2 Oingo Boingo #3 Sting #4 INXS #5 Adam Ant (Can you believe that?) Okay, so I haven't been to many concerts that impressed me as far as the production is concerned. "2 DOUBLE 01" is a superb collection of intrumental jazz-funk. The Y Chromo Boyz have the classic line-up: Phil D on the bass Marky N on the keys, Ben Pegley on guitar, Andy Brush on sax and Mark Simpson on drums. Each song is a showcase for the individual musician as well a place for instruments to team up. Saxophone & keyboards harmonize, guitar & bass double-up in grooving catchy melodies. Marky N's keyboards have a never ending assortment of sounds, Ben Pegley's guitar provides the supporting rhythm grooves as well as ripping solos, and smoothly floating over it all is Andy Brush's sax. You'll hear the influences of Stanley Clarke and Mark King when Phil D plays thundering slap-bass with the occassional harmonics. The Y Chromo Boyz play thundering, groovin' Jazz funk, smooth-but- not-too-smooth jazz & samba grooves with a bit of that latin flavor. It recalls the early days of Level 42, the days when jazz-funk masterpieces would be hidden on the b-sides of 12-inch singles, the days of "The Return Of The Handsome Rugged Man", "43", "Mr. Pink" and "The Pursuit Of Accidents". An incredible clean recording where every instrument sounds like itself, rare and refreshing in this age overproduced & sequenced fare. You are listening to 5 guys HAVING FUN, playing their instruments on 11 instrumental songs AND THEY ARE COOKIN'! Visit their website and buy the album!!!
