(Otherwise I'll have to rack up my Visa bill again...do you REALLY have something like this *the uninformed American waits with baited breath for confirmation or humiliation ;-) ) Tenthsun (aka Terri) ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2001 #156 From: TenthSun @ aol.com Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2001 10:32:55 EDT In a message dated 6/6/01 6:05:10 AM Eastern Daylight Time, Level42-request @ worldmachine.com writes: << PS: Just to ask a stupid bass question, is Mark using a fretless in Lasso The Moon, I was listening to that album last night and really noticed the bass differed slightly from that "pop' that Mark normally has. Also, I think that A Kinder Eye, would have sounded great just as an instrumental, but hey with words it is still an excellent track from an excellent album, despite the large hatred of this album! Makes me wonder what songs might have been better as instrumentals, as opposed to with lyrics, as some of the detailed orchestrations are not truly heard, due to the vocal tracks covering up some great subtle guitar and synth work! Mind you, nothing would have improved THE APE, except, the button on the master console that read, delete/purge >> I agree with somebody else, THE APE really was a very good groove and kind of a bow to their early days, you know? Oh sure, the lyrics sucked! What they really should have done was let the track sit for a bit and see if they could have developed it further. But that's just my humble opinion:-) Yeah, I know GUARANTEED is universally slagged. I think it's because their commercial instincts were warring with their musical instincts. The same thing happened on Staring at the Sun. I HATED HEAVEN IN MY HANDS when I first heard it. But now it's one of my favorite tracks ever. That's because upon repeated listening, the traditional Level 42-isms emerged: a kick ass groove, strong melodic structure, hopeful lyrics about the drive for self-transcendence. But I never got to that point with GUARANTEED because to me the lyrics are trite and the music itself is just unrelieved candy pop. Now candy pop is okay but I expect more fromL42 so nothing can rescue GUARANTEED for me. However A KINDER EYE and LASSO THE MOON and even WITH A LITTLE LOVE all stand out as gems for me. OVERTIME too. MY FATHER'S SHOES DON'T. I find it very hard to accept Englishmen singing about something so American. True that factory scenario could apply anywhere. But I think the lyrics mention something about dust on his father's shoes. Add that in with that twangy, country-sound and I'm thinking Kansas praries which don't exactly fit Level 42. Also, I can't help but think the tempo is just wrong; the song is too fast and the rhythm structure needs to be changed. It needs a slower, more loping gait to underscore that rural subtheme. Oh well... Just some thoughts:-) Tenthsun (aka Terri) ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V2001 #155 From: TenthSun @ aol.com Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2001 10:38:39 EDT In a message dated 6/5/01 6:03:39 AM Eastern Daylight Time, Level42-request @ worldmachine.com writes: << If anyone will care to remember, the Gary v Phil thing HAS been done before - quite literally to death. I am a firm believer in freedom of speech (hence the santa v Jesus debate) and I do not object to people voicing their opinions about whom they believe are 'better' artists. I simply do not think that the time has come to raise the debate so soon after the last one!! (and if you really wanna know, my vote went to Phil). >> God! Choosing between Phil and Gary is like trying to choose between Prince and Sting. Come on!! Nobody wins because they're both equally phenomenally talented. Phil would probably get most votes because he came first; he's an original founding band member. I'd probably vote for him for just those reasons and the fact that I think he's a kick ass lyricist. But I love Tracie and that came from Gary. Tracie sounds like an effortless Motown update. And pardon the American ego, but Englishmen doing a Motown sound ain't easy!! (Yeah, yeah, Steve Winwood aside; I don't count Rod Stewart). Let's just look at this as one of those "I can beat Mike Tyson" things. Just ludicrous (in a purely happy no-offense meant kind of way:-) ) Tenthsun (aka Terri) ------------------------------ Subject: By George From: Pat Flanagan Date: Sun, 10 Jun 2001 10:05:25 -0500 >The correct answer is Fastlove, from the Older album.
