Welcome back Mikey, glad you're on the road to recovery. The answer is no, Mark didn't use a fretless on this track. He did use a fretless Moon Jazz on Seven Years (he defretted it himself, using the time-honoured method of pliers and wood-filler!), but by his own admiss= ion didn't enjoy playing it much. So when it came to Lasso, he used instead= his Wal MB4 Midi-bass -- in his interview with Guitarist mag September 1991= , he explained: "I used the MB4 on that, finding that the combination of the= bass sound plus a triggered TX802 gave a nice sustainy sound. It wasn't= actually any kind of bass sound, per se; it was one of those hybrid sou= nds, but using it with an octaver it had a very convincing fretless sound. S= o I had the best of both worlds because while I feel more comfortable on a fretted instrument, it sounds like a fretless bass doing it. And in tha= t respect, even a bit of MIDI lag helps because if you think of fretless bass sounds, they're always a bit lazy and fluid, as if you're towing it alo= ng, which is nice. I admire good fretless bass players a lot..." So now you know! >A Kinder Eye... an excellent track from an excellent album, >despite the large hatred of this album! Agreed. I've always liked this track a lot, mainly because it reminds m= e of my father who's a bit of an artist too. In fact, I like the whole album and I really don't think it merits the almost universal slagging it seems to receive. = ------------------------------ Subject: saving the coded text beast mp3 From: Tom Trudell Date: Wed, 06 Jun 2001 07:54:56 -0700 > > Hello all, great list, Regarding those pages of Netscape mp3 text gobbeldygook (sp?) After you have downloaded the entire screen, you can FILE/SAVE AS and select the "SOURCE" window (not text). I think that works. Our favorite band has been defunk-ed for 8? years now, so it's a good time to start a thread like: Which album has the best lyrics? forget the music, the cover art, look at the poetry . . . I know many slag Guaranteed but IMHO it has some killer lyrics. My Father's Shoes and Kinder Eye stand out right away. -Tom > > Subject: HELP!!! That "fretless" sound was actually a synth module being triggered by what Mark played on the Wal. Get well soon, mate! - Don Z. I know that this isn't really Level 42 related, but I need your help, please. There is a quiz going on here at work where I have been given a list of 200 song lyrics dating between 1987 and 2000. I have to get the artist and song, and no band/artist is repeated twice. If it's not too much trouble, and if you know any of the answers, could you please email me privately? There is no prize - merely pride. Here are a few to start with, and I'll post a few more over the next couple of days. Your crystal ball ain't so crystal clear See you must understand I can't work a 9 to 5 So many tears I've cried, so much pain inside I know a place where I can go when I'm alone From the sharks in the penthouse to the rats in the basement Should it matter who you are Tearing off tights with my teeth The way that I feel right now oh lord it may go But she don't believe anyone can help her You keep me satisfied, you do all the things I like You don't have to leave me to see what I mean I don't check for no superficial, it's got to be beneficial If rhythyms a drug I'm hooked on you Don't ya think it's time we re-investigate this situation When we met I was skrting around you Slowly shifting, gently drifting I might rain, it might not I lie in my bed totally still Gonna throw my heart away, leave it to the other girls to play Many thanks for any help you can give. Look out for more tomorrow - I need all the help I can get. This would seem to be highly subjective under any conditions, and very hard to quantify at best. The only such "record" I have ever heard of is longest held vocal note on a recording, which is hardly a measure of a vocalist's proficiency in my book. I could understand a record for most PROLIFIC, which could be determined by # of live gigs or album appearances, etc. >PS: Just to ask a stupid bass question, is Mark using a fretless in Lasso >The Moon, Not stupid, but I'm sure it's been covered quite often. Yes, Mark does play fretless on "Lasso the Moon" and "Seven Years" (there's a nice lick on the intro, about 20 seconds in). As far as I know Guaranteed is the only recording to feature his fretless playing. >Also, I think that A Kinder Eye, would have sounded great just as an >instrumental, >but hey with words it is still an excellent track from an excellent album, >despite the large hatred of this album! Yeah, "A Kinder Eye" is very interesting musically, but George Green's lyrics add it even greater significance. >Mind you, nothing would have improved THE APE, except, the button on the >master console that >read, delete/purge. Just to add my two cents to this continuing debate, "The Ape" may not be much of a SONG, but it's a really nice GROOVE. ------------------------------ Subject: From: William Burnett Date: Wed, 6 Jun 2001 18:41:54 +0100 Greetings. From: "Nick Smith" Date: Thu, 07 Jun 2001 09:28:34 Hallo! Mikey's question: "Just to ask a stupid bass question, is Mark using a fretless in Lasso The Moon, I was listening to that album last night and really noticed the bass differed slightly from that "pop' that Mark normally has". Mark used a Wal Custom Midi bass with the MB4 interface on that track, the fretless sound coming from one of Mark's Yamaha TX802 sound modules - so yes, partly correct there Mike! Don's Moon Jazz bass was used on Seven Years - a real bona fide fretless! The question about the record for most proficient bass playing! What a load of b&llocks! How can this be quantified! There was a guy from the US some years ago who was in some record book or other for the ability to play 31 notes per second (Adrian Davison - he played a Rickenbacker bass!) - I'd like to hear that! - What notes exactly? Is he plucking the strings with a hammer drill? Music is not athletics!! Went down to Status Graphite yesterday where I got the chance to play on the first prototype of the new bass which Mark co-designed! It plays very well, the new `Bend Well' scoop behind the nut allowing some nice bends (as it was designed to do!). Rob Green will be visiting Mark later this week to get any more comments on the second prototype - from what Rob told me, Mark is absolutely over the moon with the bass as it stands at the moment! Check out www.status-graphite.com for more info! Over and Out!
