I am a firm believer in freedom of speech (hence the santa v Jesus debate) and I do not object to people voicing their opinions about whom they believe are 'better' artists. I simply do not think that the time has come to raise the debate so soon after the last one!! (and if you really wanna know, my vote went to Phil). Besides, if we are such believers in free speech, why object to my posting? I rest my case. We will all have preferences to certain styles of music and musicianship in general. As I have said before, some musicians can be called 'crap' and others are just not our style. I have never really liked U2, but can understand why some people do and I recognise their talent without being much of a fan. There are others (who shall remain nameless as I am such a coward) who are just complete crap and I will never understand how they managed to make 'music' in the first place. And, believe it or not, I DO have a life - a very nice one, thanx. On the off chance any of you might be footie fans, I just wanted to say that you were really lucky on Saturday. I'll never understand how you got out of that one. Oh, actually, on the other hand, I do understand - you used a player who's been found guilty of taking nandrolone but hasn't been banned. Hmmm, kind of makes a mockery of fair play, doesn't it. Still, with the exception of ED and FdB, I hope you do well. David in Tallinn (and off to the Ireland game on Wednesday) ------------------------------ Subject: Corr blimey... Thanks Keith..." So he reads the Digest then, does he?? Hmmmm... Sorry, I had nothing to say and I just had to share it. Do I win a fiver? Cheers ~ Mike (Sydney City Milkman) P.S. (Too bad I wasted all those years playing drums.) But seriously. I find Boon's use of a Les Paul a nice change--most funksters use Strats all the time, and much as I love that single-coil sound, the absence of same helps establish the unique sound of Level 42. I was delighted to receive both the 2-disc cd-rom and single audio cd of Mark's recent Isle of Wight live show. The CD-rom plays fine but I'm having serious problems with the audio cd. It won't play! I'm in the United States...does anybody think the disc is somehow formatted for european cd players (like dvd's are encoded to play only in certain global zones)? I'm stumped. Any ideas? Thanks! Mark Mohr ------------------------------ Subject: Marcus Miller - Live From: Winston Walker Date: Mon, 4 Jun 2001 15:41:09 -0400 I'm posting the following for Lolita... I went to see Marcus Miller last night and the show was fantastic! I was front and center for both shows, so I was able to watch his hands. He played two basses - his normal Fender '77 Jazz and a beautiful Fodera fretless. Kenny Garrett sat in on saxophone for the second set. All you bassheads who love hearing a great bass player need to check him out - I was mesmerized the entire time. I was also in heaven because he played two songs on bass clarinet, which was my instrument for ten years - he is the only person besides Eric Dolphy or Bennie Maupin [from Herbie Hancock's Headhunters era] to play it commercially on a regular basis. He only played five shows in the states but he is playing quite a bit in Europe and Japan over the next two months, so you definitely should check him out if he is coming near your town. Here are four of the biggest dates to remember: June 22 The Forum, London [good venue - saw JTQ there in '98] June 23 The Academy, Manchester July 14 North Sea Jazz Festival, The Hague, The Netherlands July 15 Montreaux Jazz Festival, Switzerland The rest of the shows are on the website, but I know there are four shows in Japan, two in Tokyo alone. Later!!
