Pat ------------------------------ Subject: Long time no see From: Nathania Apple Date: Fri, 01 Jun 2001 07:33:21 -0700 Hello, fellow digesters! After countless battles with various ISPs I have finally settled in to my permanent email address. While I was in transition it didn't seem to make sense to subscribe to the digest, since half the time my emails got lost anyway. Just wanted to pop in and send a shout out to all my buddies: Winston, Lolita and Eric, I'll probably be in your neck of the woods sometime toward the end of summer. See you then! Monique and Julie - miss you guys! Hoping to make it to BritFest also. TCOY, Nathania ------------------------------ Subject: Gary the Great From: Don Z Date: Fri, 1 Jun 2001 07:33:36 -0700 (PDT) > So I won't express (out loud) anymore that I > think that Gary H. is not a very good drummer... What sort of nonsense is this? "Not a very good drummer"??? Gary Husband is one of the best drummers in the world! I've shown the IOW2000 videos to two of the best drummers in my area, and they're blown away by Gary. I think this is another case of Lyndon-sucks-because-he-isn't-Mike-Lindup syndrome. Gary's style of drumming is quite different from Phil Gould's, but that hardly means he's no good. In fact, while I prefer Phil's approach to those early tunes, I think Gary clearly is the superior drummer overall. I'd like to see Phil try to play the improvisational jazz that Gary plays with Holdsworth, for instance. I had a tepid response from a few Digesters and apologies to the others whose e-mails got lost and I was unable to contact. But I'm desperate to get rid of it. If anyone would like it or would consider swapping it against anything Go West/Level 42ish get in touch with me with details with what you would like to trade against it. Or if you have already e-mailed me please get in touch. Many thanks Lesley ------------------------------ Subject: Afro-Cuban All Stars From: alex.friesen @ sickkids.ca Date: Fri, 1 Jun 2001 15:37:28 -0400 My unexpected treat for the year: I played with the Afro-Cuban All Stars last night. It was totally unexpected. I was playing in the host band at the inaugural jam at Durango, a bar on Bloor street in the trendy strip just east of Bathurst here in Toronto, and up 'til twelve-thirty our musical guests were limited to an electric violin player (who fit in surprisingly well given the material we were doing), a couple of singers, and a hand-drummer. Then about ten guys from the Afro-Cuban All Stars show up. And they brought instruments. So us host band guys played a Chili Peppers tune to open the set, then told the All Star guys that they were free to join right in at any time. We then launched into "Black Magic Woman," and instantly the instruments came out. Without going into too much detail, there were two conga player (the first was great, the second blew me away with his aggressive style), a bassist, another violinist, and a trumpet player. Let me tell ya, those boys can play! And in the centre of the storm, there was me holding down the grooves. All the musicians were great, but the trumpet player in particular was just unbe-freakin'-leavable! He was soloing like there's no tomorrow! But of course these was a tomorrow, that is, today, and they're playing Massey Hall tonight. Level 42 link: Massy Hall was the first New World venue the lads played, and I know I'm not the only digester who was there back in 198x. My new motto: Never Leave Home Without a Tape Recorder! (Oh yeah, my Spanish language chops could use work, too.) Learn more about the Afro-Cuban All Stars at < http://www.afrocubaweb.com/afrocubanallstars.htm>. After tonight, they're heading for the west coast of the USA. If their paid gig is anything like their off-hours playing, I highly recommend catching a show: These guys ooze feel from every pore! ...Alex... ------------------------------ Subject: but i'm NOT selling my book!!! From: "Winston Walker" Date: Fri, 1 Jun 2001 16:52:27 -0400 So, i'm checking out the lovely Level 42 auctions on www.ebay.com, and what do i see? Some bloke in the UK is selling MY personal copy of the Level 42 Biography? How do I know it's MY personal copy? Because the description shows a scan of my book, identical in the price sticker, and small rips in the cover. This world wide web thing is getting REAL scary. :-) Also, speaking of EBAY, dont forget to bid on the adverts torn from a magazine. Only $5.00 each, rush those bids in. Win
