Wow, that is a blast from the past - nice to see you post! For those of you who don't know Pat, he is one of the digest greybeards and came on at the same time I did, back in '95. Welcome back dude! LJ ------------------------------ Subject: gary husband From: "Huge Rademaker" Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 17:53:55 +0200 Hi all, In last month's Dutch magazine for music makers (called Music Maker..) was an interview with Gary Moore. He stated that some years ago he wanted to make a solo album with ex-Cream bass player Jack Bruce ("I Feel Free"). They tried to contract Gary Husband, but "...he wasn't available...", so they asked Ginger Baker instead. So I won't express (out loud) anymore that I think that Gary H. is not a very good drummer... Those who want to know more about the Moore-interview, e-mail me privately. I still do not have an Internet connection at home at the moment (waiting for the cable guys), so do not expect an answer within a week or so.... (I searched the Digest Archive (http://www.worldmachine.com/level42/#archive) on this topic, but it seemed that no one posted this information before. Sorry if you all knew about Gary M. wanting Gary H.) Bye for now Bass regards, Huge Rademaker Get your Free E-mail at http://www.level42.zzn.com ____________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE Web and POP E-mail Service in 14 languages at http://www.zzn.com. ------------------------------ Subject: Non-L42 Reunion From: "John Shuford" Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 09:20:49 -0700 Yesterday, Mikey wrote: "Why is Phil and the "we", so against the smallest of prospects that they may play under the Level 42 name again, was it that bad and traumatic? Geez! As if a future reunion would be such a bad and evil thing." From the sounds of things, I'd say any of them don't want to have to do a L42 reunion (with all the hype, expectations, etc.). I'd also say, given what Phil wrote, that it would still only be 3 of the 4 getting together. They wouldn't want it to seem that that was a L42 reunion. I kinda doubt that if MK were not involved he would be willing to give them permission to reform as L42 - just a hunch. shuf ------------------------------ Subject: Andy Soijka & Phills solo From: "Desmond Lynch" Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 18:29:28 +0100 Hi Guys long time no speak....busy bee these days wow that is sad to see that message from Andy!!! From: Winston Walker Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 15:03:56 -0400 Rhino Cherishes Funk Pioneer With June 5 Double CD GLORY B DA' FUNK'S ON ME! THE BOOTSY COLLINS ANTHOLOGY Rhino/Warner Archives salutes the #1 Funkateer with GLORY B DA' FUNK'S ON ME! THE BOOTSY COLLINS ANTHOLOGY, due June 5. The 2-CD collection includes 25 seminal sides from Bootsy's Rubber Band, a mid-'70s offshoot of George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic. THE BOOTSY COLLINS ANTHOLOGY includes songs from Stretchin' Out In Bootsy's Rubber Band (1976), Ahh...The Name Is Bootsy, Baby! (1977), Bootsy? Player Of The Year (1978), This Boot Is Made For Fonk-N (1979), Ultra Wave (1980), The One Giveth, The Count Taketh Away (1982), and Back In The Day: The Best Of Bootsy. Among the tracks are such top R&B charting hits as "Bootzilla" (#1), "Body Slam" (#12), "Hollywood Squares" (#17), "Stretchin' Out (In A Rubber Band)" (#18), and "Can't Stay Away" (#19). The set also features such classic long jams as "Munchies For Your Love," "Very Yes," "Jam Fan (Hot)," and "F-Encounter," as well as a Collins-produced song from the 1980 self-titled Sweat Band album ("Freak To Freak," making its CD debut). ANTHOLOGY co-producer Barry "Rockbarry" Benson describes Bootsy's often-imitated-but-never-duplicated sound as eccentric. "The funk is many things to many people," Benson says. "It's raw. It's nasty. It's unpredictable. It's goofy. It's brilliant. It's sexy. It's emotional. All of these definitions also describe The Second Officer Of Funk: Booty Collins." One of Ohio's greatest players, Cincinnati native Booty Collins first found the funk in The JB's, backing James Brown from 1969 to 1971. He soon caught the eye of Parliament/Funkadelic's George Clinton, and by mid-decade had become one of P-Funk's stars before going solo in 1976. Bootsy quickly became one of the pioneers of funk bass playing (the "space bass"), making it a true lead instrument, not just background rhythm. While his music has been sampled by such rappers as Snoop Dogg, Eazy-E, and OutKast, Bootsy's style of playing has also left its mark on such rockers as The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Primus. Some of the era's most noted musicians bounced through Bootsy's Rubber Band: drummers Frankie "Kash" Waddy and Gary "Mudd-Bone" Cooper; trumpeter Richard "Kush" Griffith; saxophonist Maceo Parker; vocalists Philippe Wynne (yes, the Spinners guy) and Robert "P-Nut" Johnson; keyboardists Joel "Razor Sharp" Johnson and Fredrick "Flinstone" Allen; guitarist Phelps "Catfish" Collins (Bootsy's brother), and trombonist Fred Wesley. And of course several members of the P-Funk mothership appear throughout ANTHOLOGY. ------------------------------ Subject: From: =?iso-8859-1?q?PAUL=20SUMMERS?= Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 21:29:18 +0100 (BST) One for the UK digesters http://www.mtv.co.uk/content/fun/games/stereo_mps/index.html Have a peaceful weekend y'all Joe ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I fully expect to encur the wrath of a >certain person, go ahead and spead a few days ranting at me. :D Curious. It seems like half of Pat's sadly infrequent posts these days are concerned with trying to bait me into apoplexy. There is a limit to how much bilious excess one person can expunge, and personally I can't top Digest 217 from 1999. Anyway I'm a mild-mannered father of three these days. I can't even be bothered to react to that deliberate spelling mistake. I'm like Norman Bates at the end of Psycho. >Subject: briefest >From: "Brian Flint" > > I have a bit of selfish news to impart. My new band is gigging regular >in the sacramento area. Jolly good. If you ever get round to making a CD you will be sure to let us all know about it on alternate days, won't you? Anyway, a quick scan of the archives reveals that Jellyfish have been previously recommended by Eric Pseja, Rob Pashman, Joey Vela, the provocateur Flanagan and Ken Hayes. Gentlemen, I salute you all. (Even Ken Hayes who once accused me of "causing a lot of trouble and upset recently...the type who sits back and lets someone say something before jumping on them and sarcastily tearing apart their views...never actually giving anything of himself." Wherever did he get such ideas?)
