I like 'Guaranteed,' and its production holds up well on the rock side of my brain. But I also know it's not traditional Level 42 and that a lot of the old-liners here and elsewhere have their own justifiable reasons to hate it. I don't think the packaging would have any effect. Many of yhe most passionate L42 fans would have slagged 'Guaranteed' anyway. It continued the shift away from the early-mid 80s sound of the group (one that started with 'Staring At the Sun') and emphasised Gary Husband's hammering drum sound, which is harder than Phil Gould's. It IS interesting how artwork and packaging affects the public perception of a group over time. I remember when Hall and Oates came out with 'Big Bam Boom' in 1984. When I saw the album cover with its wacky graphics, then saw their longer hair and outre clothes, I thought to myself 'Have the boys gone wacky on us?' Most 80s fans had gotten used to seeing Daryl in NYC-cool clothing and full, but not REALLY long hair (pre-mullets). BTW: I think the graphics on the RCA and Resurgence 'Forever Now' weren't impressive, but either version was a better album than 'Guaranteed.' I still play something from it every day. AG PS Now that Michael Stipe has come out and disclosed that he is gay, can we expect him to go the whole hog and make the ‘shock’ revelation that REM are total shite? _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
