From: Steve Robson Organization: Cadence Design Systems Date: Tue, 01 May 2001 11:44:10 +0100 All this talk of wanting to see Mark's hose and Annie's shop and generally wanting to get "close" to the band etc has reminded me of a "close encounter" that wasn't close at all! Way back in 1980/1 when I was still at school (yes I am an old fart!) we had a small competition-ette in our music class - to organise a visit to a recording studio. Each of us wrote to different studios and sat back. Of the small percentage that replied, only one agreed for about 8-10 of us to visit. Polydor!!! Ta-daa! The great day arrived, we piled into the school minibus, wrote into the bus log book the obligatiry comment "Warning - dangerous nut holding the steering wheel" and all was jolly. But unfortunately my anticipation of seeing a band (or even "The" band) recording or mixing were not to be. The engineer hastily grabbed the first multi-track tape he could find to demonstrate the mixing console - Sham 69! Still we had some fun doing our own "mix" of "If The Kids Are United"! Now back to the records... You may (hopefully) consider yourself a well balanced human being - don’t assume everyone else on the planet is. As the son of someone who found very minor celebrity during the 80’s my family have been exposed to the crank phone calls @ 1am, the bunny boilers and the ‘I’m your biggest fan’ standing on the doorstep – I can’t imagine the scale of the sh*t L42 had to deal with at their height and still have to endure from ‘fans’ who think they ‘re entitled to a stake in ‘heroe X’ even after they’ve left that world behind (see you at the bar?). If this goes above your head, feel free to contact me personally, (don't want to piss any more digesters off) – failing that, become a limbo dancer. My all time biggest influence in music was Jimi Hendrix. I have everything that he did that is worth having, but I was in a used CD store and found something that I'd never seen. It was on Reprise records, as was most of his stuff, it is called "Lifelines, the Jimi Hendrix Story". I found and bought disk #III, which means that there are two more. I have called some stores but nobody has heard if it and it's not listed anywhere. This stuff is like gold to me and I would really appreciate any help anyone could give me. I have a feeling though that the people who have these disks are hard core fans and would not part with them. Just thought I'd try. I guess the chances of finding them are about as good as a Level 42 with all of the members happening in Jacksonville Florida. Thanks for the space B.O'D. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Subject: How To Get Ahead In Advertising From: "Andrew Goodwin" Date: Tue, 01 May 2001 15:27:56 +0100 >Subject: Hard to Find Records >From: "David Goodall" > >http://www.htfr.com > >This is the URL for Hard to Find Fecords > >MR20643 LEVEL 42 VS TIN TIN OUT THE SUN GOES DOWN POLYDOR TIN TIN OUT >HOUSE >MIXES...more 1998 UK(P) Back Order Tsk, hard to find? There is hope for Estonia after all. I was in a pub on Saturday evening, and there were a couple of DJs DJing quietly in the corner. The music was quiet enough not to have to listen to it if you didn't want to (which makes a nice change here), but at one point I realised that the song they were playing was some kind of remix of Starchild. I presume it was that BMR one, whatever it was I certainly hadn't heard it before. I hope Steve Randall's post on Tuesday cleared up the drainage issue. And as regards Loz's comments to me that "Well, no, of course Joy Barling is not the author of the Wallingford procedure, DOH." - well, I have to admit that, although I like the music of L42, I do not spend hours memorising the names of the artists of the album covers. I deeply and humbly apologise. I could say that I'll go and put that right now, but I'd just be lying. In fact the L42 artwork has never made any great impression on me and I certainly don't believe that any of it adds anything to the albums that a simple photo of the band wouldn't have done. The Staring At The Sun stuff is OK but the rest is just plain boring. My wife and I are planning to visit the Isle of Wight in the summer - not because of L42, because she absolutely hates them, but just to be touristy. I guess several of you are quite familiar with the place, but I've never been myself. If anyone has any recommendations about what to see or where to go on the island, could you please e-mail me privately. I'd be very grateful for any tips. Thanks in advance David
