Well bugger me senseless....I saw a copy of DOTC the other week in a second hand CD shop here in Sydney. If I can remember which shop, I'll have another look when I get a chance and grab it for you. I don't blame you for wanting to get hold of it - it's a fab album and I could never part with my copy. I also think Indian Summer is a bloody good 'un too. The more I think about it, the more I reckon Go West was without doubt one of THE Brit bands of the 80s/90s. How good is Peter Cox's voice?! Did I read on the Digest that they're still touring? You know those little annonymous mail boxes you can rent at the post office. Most famous people that have snail mail correspondence use one in an effort to keep their private address private. Well at least that's the way it is here in the states.... Do you know of some way of hacking the postal service's website that I'm not aware of? I live in Edinburgh. Scotland is quite some way from, well most of Level42 country (i.e. London or the isle of wight) and so my chances to go to the gigs, levelfests etc are quite small. I've been a fan since 1984, I DO have all the albums (on tape, CD and Re-issued CD!) and I have been to some gigs including the Jazz Cafe in 1999, where I got to meet Mark and Gary in the dressing room after the gig! I have a pair of Gary's sticks, signed by the man himself. I've got personally signed CD's from Mark and a Good Luck message from Mark was read out at my wedding. I therefore count myself as a Fan. I am not however, a psycho! (Although I did learn to fly at Bournemouth and flew around the isle of wight trying to find the big house that's in the Fait Acompat video.) I'm a married, late 20's IT Project Manager with my feet on the ground. I do feel a little left out as a fan, as the gigs etc are all down south. To remedy this I thought I would write to Mark, expressing my loyalty, admiration and share some of what his music has done for me. As for Annie's Shop, I was aware for postings sometime ago that her shop was in Edinburgh, and yes I did want to make the pilgrimage and buy something from her. Of course, these days there are plenty of nutters out there, some seem to post to this group at time:-) However, if you look back, I asked for private email for Mark's Address (thanks to all that reply to me) and as was mentioned, Annie's Shop is open to the public and I'm sure she will welcome any business, from whatever source. Finally, I've enjoyed reading this digest for some years, posting rarely but never the less enjoying the comments, knowledge and friendship of people with a shared interest. Lets no forget why we are subscribing or reading this group - because we are fan of Level 42. I see very little to gain from flaming fellow digest members, when we are all here for the same reason. I do strongly object to the strong language used in some messages, and it's use only shows what a poor grasp of the english language you have. I hope this explains my actions and that the majority of the digest members understand and hopefully agree. I searched on Level 42 and didn't find a long list of 12"s etc but I did see these which, at least, I've not seen before.. The site says it's got over 50,000 titles in it's vinyl collection, although it's a tad sluggish.. Drains are pipes through which water flows. Gulleys are the structures, topped by a grating, by which means, water enters the drainage system. (Unless of course it is a kerb weir type entry) Who says the picture has been scanned in two goes. Looks to me like the book has just been folded flat and the sellotape (more likely magic tape) which is holding such a valuable bible together is causing a colour difference. (bible means "book") I suspect the cover picture was taken quite close to the Institute of Hydrology in Benson Lane, Crowmarsh, Wallingford. (Any locals like to check?) The gulley cover / grating is of a type no longer manufactured, and was probably cast by the now defunct Wallingford Foundry. This efficient type was used in rural locations on hills and where gulleys were a long distance apart. However they are somewhat poor for walking upon. The album cover grating would also seem to be a defunct British Standard type, abandoned when cheaper substitutes were permitted by European Standard J1450. The footway in Benson Lane would seem to be bituminous macadam, probably 1/4" nominal size at that date, whereas the album cover sports what look like 18" by 12" precast concrete flags. The kerbs in both instances are dressed granite, the lighter ones being used in small rural "conservation" areas such as Wallingford. It may be that the joints are mortared, but it is difficult to see from the picture, being wet with rain, as is the carriageway surfacing. The joints shown on the album cover are easily visible and, as rightly observed, mortared. These large 8ft by 12" kerbs are used in cities where vehicle over-run is more common. The location may be near the studios where the album was recorded or perhaps outside a pub frequented by studio employees. But kerbs of this type were also used in Scotland and the location may even be outside No 95, High street Edinburgh. Steve Randall ------------------------------ Subject: Stalker alert From: "goldie100" Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 15:49:43 +0100 Hi all, Absolutely right - Annie would hate anyone knowing where her shop is, after all as the proprietor of the aforementioned premises customers are the last thing she needs! it would be handy to know what she sells, though. I am positive that she wouldn't mind the odd fan (I use the term 'odd' very loosely) popping in to peruse her wares, or even just for a chat - I'm sure she would be quite happy for a L42 fan to be interested. I must admit I was guilty of driving around Streatham with my mate many years ago trying to find MKs house. I was young and foolish (I didn't find it - no surprise there) and to this day I still don't know what I would have done if I had located it. The point is, this kind of thing does happen when you are young - I am sure that we are all grown up enough not to pester people from a now defunct band ('backing singer' included). Unless of course you demand a drink from your hero at the bar. Incidently, my dad's mate owned a music shop in Tooting where Mark used to buy his strings, tambourines (?) etc. He used to tell me when Mark popped in. I never once did anything about it, and continued to admire Mark from very much afar - as I still do. Mad? no. Sensible? I think so. That got me to recalling somewhere deep in the memory banks that L42 was Madonna's warmup act in Detroit years ago - and I thought then, as I do now, that the order should have been reversed. Green" Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 22:22:08 -0500 Hey Levelheads! Nice to say that the request for the Level 42 Unreleased CD has gone very well. Many have enquired about it, so I've got many made and ready to send so far. However, this has really opened a Pandora's Box!! I've got enough for a first pressing of about 25-30 right off, but that's about all for now. It has taken me a while to develop the art work for the CDs, but I think that it has come out looking very nice to say the least. So...for those of you who have requested this CD -- it's on the way!! Keep on the lookout for it!! Best regards, ~Sean Also: for anyone who woule like to see the artwork for the CDs, please e-mail me privately for it. -- *********** "The MIDI Extreme" *********** * http://www.flash.net/~questps/midi.htm * *** For the best MIDI files on the net!*** ******************************************
