From: "Randall, Steve" Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2001 11:55:48 +0100 All this old nonsense about Star Wars becoming a religion. I would rather the tenets of Star Trek were enshrined in statute, but who needs any more religions anyway?. They are a device for individuals to hold power over the superstitious and gullible, who cannot accept responsibility for their own lives. (Much like astrology) Even as I write, people are murdering each other because their imaginary friend in the sky is not the same one as the other persons imaginary friend. More people have been killed for religious reasons than anything else. As soon as religion is organised, some one will take over for their own ends. True, most preach for the altruistic deeds to ones fellow man, but only those fellow men who have the same imaginary friend. Anyway, I suspect this Star Wars spam has been started by some film merchandiser to boost flagging interest. If you have religious leanings, this sad site may be of interest to you - http://trainupachild.com/ - it gave me a laugh Sorry if all this tosh is not L42 related, but somebody else started it, Steve Randall ------------------------------ Subject: Recall: Star Bores - or - May the Farce be with you. Music has been used for the purposes of religions in the past, aiding in the nurture and development of the art. Perhaps it will eventually bite the hand that fed it, and through friendship, not rivallry, help kick religion into touch. With reference to faggots, are faggotti not instruments of the woodwind family? Does this mean we should bundle them up beneath heretics and set fire to them? Memories may not suffice in the long run. After all we are all just material girls living in a material world. I sold my 1979 Rickenbacker 4001 (bought with Geddy Lee and Chris Squire in mind) and it really is one of the things in life I regret. Boon will do what he wants. Boon is the only one to have to live with his decisions. Des, you should buy them. Maybe he'll want to buy them back in a few years when he has more money. Winston, it is not just a guitar. There is the memorabilia aspect. There is the vintage aspect. There is the "Boon's sound" aspect. Let's not forget Larks' Tongues in Aspic. Is a violin just a violin or a sax just a sax? Why does Mark (or any musician, really) insist on playing on particular equipment? And what if your guitar was made on the Friday before a long weekend? It seems a sad day when any musician of this caliber with this kind of past success needs the money. Maybe they should release Level 42 trading cards. You know, I'll trade you a Boon playing the Telecaster now owned by Des for a Mike Lindup with big hair. Colin ------------------------------ Subject: Guitars are different ... man From: "bunty omar" Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2001 11:01:17 -0400 It's up to Boon, but I think it's terribly sad. Guitars aren't a bit like synths (mass produced plastic boxes). Every guitar is unique aesthetically and sonically irrespective of price/model and like Levis - they get better with age as they become marked with years of blood, grease, snot, sweat, piss, tears, jism etc. Jimi Hendrix (alledgedly) used to use the horn of his Fender to shag groupies when he could no longer rise to the occasion. The finest example of a mans devotion to his axe however, has to be Ron Wood (Rolling Stones) who famously booked 2 seats on Concorde - one for himelf, the other for his beloved strat. That's class - don't do it Boon! --------------------------------------------------------------- Using a Macintosh? I doubt it. I'm the only other one I know of in Florida (online anyway). Although I am working on a few converts. One of them is the manager of a local drum shop, who happened to have RITF & Guaranteed, but didn't know about all the others. I let him borrow all my reissues, and he played them in the shop non-stop for two weeks. He said he had a lot of people asking (in a positive manner) who that was. Incidentally, one day when I was in there, he pointed out a tall, skinny kid talking to one of the teachers. After the kid left, he told me it was Jaco Pastorius' son, and he played the bass a lot like his dad. Just thought you'd like to know. That's me today, Chuck Tampa, FL
